Philip Morris Glass (born January 31, 1937) is a classical American composer. He is considered one of the most influential music makers of the late 20th century. His music is also often controversially described as minimal music, along with the work of the other "major minimalists" La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Steve Reich.
Glass has distanced himself from the "minimalist" label, describing himself instead as a composer of "music with repetitive structures". Though his early mature music shares much with what is normally called "minimalist", he has since evolved stylistically. Currently, he describes himself as a "classicist", pointing out that he is trained in harmony and counterpoint and studied such composers as Franz Schubert, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with Nadia Boulanger.
Glass has founded his namesake musical group, the Philip Glass Ensemble, with which he still performs on keyboards, and has written operas, musical theatre works, ten symphonies, eleven concertos, solo works, chamber music including seven string quartets and instrumental sonatas, and film scores. Three of his film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards.
Kenny Werner (born November 19, 1951) is an American jazz pianist and composer.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 19, 1951 and then growing up in Oceanside, New York, Werner began playing and performing at a young age, first recording on television at the age of 11. Although he studied classical piano as a child, he enjoyed playing anything he heard on the radio and improvisation was his true calling. In high school and his first years of college he attended the Manhattan School of Music as a classical piano major.
His aptitude for improvisation led him to the Berklee School of Music in 1970, where he met and studied with his first piano/spiritual teacher, Madame Chaloff.
From Boston, Werner traveled to Brazil with the saxophonist Victor Assis Brasil. There he met Assis' twin brother, Brazilian pianist Joao Assis Brasil. His studies with Joao and Madame Chaloff would lead to the writing of the book Effortless Mastery.
Werner started his own trio in 1981 with drummer Tom Rainey and bassist Ratzo Harris. The Kenny Werner Trio matured for fourteen years, touring in America and Europe and recording four albums along the way.
Glass is a non-crystalline amorphous solid that is often transparent and has widespread practical, technological, and decorative usage in, for example, window panes, tableware, and optoelectronics. Scientifically, the term "glass" is often defined in a broader sense, encompassing every solid that possesses a non-crystalline (that is, amorphous) structure at the atomic scale and that exhibits a glass transition when heated towards the liquid state.
The most familiar, and historically the oldest, types of glass are based on the chemical compound silica (silicon dioxide), the primary constituent of sand. The term glass, in popular usage, is often used to refer only to this type of material, which is familiar from use as window glass and in glass bottles. Of the many silica-based glasses that exist, ordinary glazing and container glass is formed from a specific type called soda-lime glass, composed of approximately 75% silicon dioxide (SiO2), sodium oxide (Na2O) from sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), calcium oxide, also called lime (CaO), and several minor additives. A very clear and durable quartz glass can be made from pure silica which is very tough and resistant to thermal shock, being able to survive immersion in water while red hot. However, quartz must be heated to well over 3,000 °F (1,650 °C) (white hot) before it begins to melt, and it has a very narrow glass transition, making glassblowing and hot working difficult. In glasses like soda lime, the other compounds are used to lower the melting temperature and improve the temperature workability of the product at a cost in the toughness, thermal stability, and optical transmittance.
Terrace Martin is an American music producer from Los Angeles, California. He is perhaps best known for producing records for several prominent artists, such as Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Stevie Wonder, Charlie Wilson, Raphael Saadiq and Kendrick Lamar, among others. Martin is a multi-instrumentalist, who samples everything from funk and jazz to classical and soul, in his hip hop production. Martin works as an artist under his company, Terrace Martin Music, which is managed by Executive Director Monesia Hobbs.
Martin's father is a jazz drummer and his mother is a singer. He grew up listening to a broad range of music, including John Coltrane and Parliament and began playing the piano at age six. At 13, producing his first tracks on his Casio CZ101 Keyboard and an E-mu SP-1200, Martin was encouraged to take up the saxophone and learned to play it by himself before enrolling into Santa Monica High School, to sharpen his musical skills. He transferred to Locke High School, to study under Reggie Andrews, where he became first chair of the All-State Jazz Band. As a child prodigy, Martin gained the interest of talk show host Jay Leno, who presented him with a scholarship and later purchased his first professional horn. After high school, Martin attended CalArts but decided school wasn't for him, and began touring with Puff Daddy and the gospel choir God's Property.

Inspired by Elaine Scarry's extraordinary book, The Body in Pain: The Making and Unmaking of the World, this film portrays a young woman whose leg was severely injured in a battle during the American Civil War as she desperately attempted to flee the battlefield. This action "unmakes" her world as pain ensues. The necessary amputation and limb disposal are fiercely depicted. The woman undergoes an examination of her memory by a Dutch empiricist, Professor Pieter van Geheugen (i.e. 'Rock of Memory'). Prof. van Geheugen is at the helm of a laboratory inhabited by a curious group of animated creatures. The established hierarchy of the academic environment is subtly challenged by an errant student. Implications of grief, compassion, sympathy and empathy arise as the examining team acknowled...

http://www.daysandnightsfestival.com/ This was the closing night, September 4th, 2011 at the Carmel Valley Theatre, Carmel CA. I saw the night before with my parents, with a full ensemble, and decided I needed to come back the next day by myself. Hard to believe Mr. Glass is 74 years old, go Philip. This video is dedicated to the woman I was dating back in 1985 who suggested we drop acid and watch a movie called Koyaanisqatsi. I've never been the same since. I'm still in love with that woman to this day. I strongly urge anyone and everyone to watch Philip Glass' masterpiece Koyaanisqatsi, I saw it performed live by Philip with the movie behind him 10 years ago, it was just as mindblowing then. Filmed in the Arizona Desert outside Phoenix and in the Nevada desert around Las Vegas. I have taken my time before posting footage. I first flew a Phantom at the beginning of Feb but haven't had much opportunity to practise my flying skills as I live in London under the Heathrow flight path! There is a lot to learn and as you can see in this edit the best shots, well I think so, are the really controlled slow shots where I held my composition around the cacti. I still am nowhere near good yet. I need the controls to be second nature. The effective reversing of them when facing different ways stills screws with my head the same way switching between Canon and Nikon glass does with it's opposing focus direction! My new class giving a peak at my creative process! skl.sh/matty Please Use Headphones for best sound experience. :) Poland is a country with a very brutal past, even so recent at just 70 years ago. The holocaust is something I have thought about often as a child, especially as a 3-year-old with a vivid imagination and my father sitting me in front of the television to watch Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' film. I have always wanted to visit the German Nazi concentration camps and let the seriousness and power of it envelop me, humble me, and change me. It was one of the most chilling moments of my life, also because of how peaceful and beautiful the camps were. Spring flowers blooming bright and birds playfully jumping over the brick rubble. The calm breeze definitely added to its eeriness. Pol...

Following Glass's early operas, the conductor Dennis Russell Davies had been urging the composer to write more orchestral pieces, and the concerto marks Glass's first full-scale venture into non-theatrical orchestral composing.Glass's original concept was for a five-movement work, and Zukofsky requested a slow, high finale. As the composition process developed, however, Glass decided that five movements were too many and settled for a more conventional three-movement format. According to Glass, this traditional structure was not a concession to formality but simply a result of the work finding "a voice of its own" as the first and second movements developed into longer pieces than he had originally conceived. The work was composed with Glass's father, Ben, in mind, despite the latter's dea...
Philip Glass - Metamorphosis (1988) I made this record using an old amazing (one of my favorite instrument actually) Steinway & Sons model O grand piano. Composer Philip Glass, reflects on the revival of his first opera, "Einstein on the Beach," influences on his music, and composing music scores for films.
The first in a series of composer videos from The Music Sales Group. Philip Glass, early protagonist of the Minimalist movement, studied with Milhaud and Nadia Boulanger. His first job, assisting Ravi Shankar on a film soundtrack, heralded the start of his own successful cinema career, and to date he has scored over fifty movies. Early works tended to be abstract, but from the mid-1970s his attention shifted towards the stage. His first operatic triumph, Einstein on the Beach, did much to reinvigorate the international contemporary opera scene. Profoundly interested in traditional cultures, Glass often draws on Eastern traditions, as in Monsters of Grace (1997), a multimedia collaboration based on the writings of Rumi.

Passenger - Let Her Go, from the album All the Little Lights. My first lyrics video. Hope you enjoy it! Made entirely in Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LYRICS Passenger - Let Her Go Well you only need the light when it's burning low Only miss the sun when it starts to snow Only know you love her when you let her go Only know you've been high when you're feeling low Only hate the road when you're missin' home Only know you love her when you let her go And you let her go Staring at the bottom of your glass Hoping one day you'll make a dream last But dreams come slow and they go so fast You see her when you close your eyes Maybe one day you'll understand why Everything you touch surely dies But you only ...

"In this court, all men are equal." You have heard
those words many times before. "All men are equal." But
what about all women ? Are women the equal of men ?
There are those who tell us that they are.
Last week, an auspicious meeting of women was held in
Kalamazoo. The meeting was addressed by a very
prominent lady who is noted for her modesty. She is so
modest that she blindfolds herself when taking a bath.
Modesty runs in her family. She has a nephew who is
just ten years of age. Sometimes, the nephew says "I'm
going to the forbidden name store." The little fellow
is too modest to say "I'm going to the A & P." Well,
here is what that modest lady said to the gathering of
women in Kalamazoo :
"My sisters : Thetime has come when we must stand up
and declare ourselves. For too long have we been
trodden under the feet of men. For too long have we
been treated as second-class citizens by men who say
that we are only good for cooking their meals, mending
their socks, and raising their babies.
"You have a boyfriend, and he calls you his queen.
Then, when he marries you, he crowns you. These are the
kind of men who, when they become romantic or, I should
say, when they are in a certain mood, they want to kiss
you and kiss you and kiss you again.
"My sisters, I say to you : Put your faces against it,
and, if the man takes from you without your permission,
look him squarely in the face, roll your eyes at him,
and say to him ‘How dare you, you male chauvinist pig !
You put that kiss right back where you got it from.’
"My sisters, we are in bondage, and we need to be
liberated. Liberation is our cry. Just yesterday, I
talked with a woman who is the mother of fifteen
children. She said ‘Yes, I want to be liberated from
the bedroom.’
"And so, my sisters, the time has come when we must let
this male chauvinist understand that the hand that
changes the diapers is the hand that shall rule the
world.
"And now, my sisters, let us stand and sing our
national song. For the benefit of you who have not yet
memorized the words, here they are :
The woman's day is drawing near, it's written in the
stars
The fall of men is very near, proclaim it from your
cars.
Sisters, rise ! You flags unfurl ! Don't be a little
girl.
Say "Down with men, their power must end : Women shall
