The Meatpacking District is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan that runs roughly from West 14th Street south to Gansevoort Street, and from the Hudson River east to Hudson Street, although recently it is sometimes considered to have extended north to West 16th Street and east beyond Hudson Street.
A Native American trading station called "Sapohanikan" was on the riverbank, which, accounting for landfill, was located about where Gansevoort Street meets Washington Street today. The footpath that led from Sapohanikan inland to the east became the foundation for Gansevoort Street, which by accident or design aligns, within one degree, to the spring and autumnal equinoxes. In recognition of this history, petitions were made to call the 14th Street Park "Saphohanikan Park" although it appears no formal recognition was given.
The earliest development of the area now known as the Meatpacking District came in the mid-19th century. Before that it was the location of Fort Gansevoort and of the upper extension of Greenwich Village, which had been a vacation spot until overtaken by the northward movement of New York City. The irregular street patterns in the area resulted from the clash of the Greenwich Village street system with that of the Commissioners' Plan of 1811, which sought to impose a regular grid on the undeveloped part of Manhattan island.
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.
New York—often called New York City or the City of New York to distinguish it from the State of New York, of which it is a part—is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York metropolitan area, the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States and one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. A global power city, New York exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world.
Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of New York State. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898. With a census-estimated 2014 population of 8,491,079 distributed over a land area of just 305 square miles (790 km2), New York is the most densely populated major city in the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. By 2014 census estimates, the New York City metropolitan region remains by a significant margin the most populous in the United States, as defined by both the Metropolitan Statistical Area (20.1 million residents) and the Combined Statistical Area (23.6 million residents). In 2013, the MSA produced a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of nearly US$1.39 trillion, while in 2012, the CSA generated a GMP of over US$1.55 trillion, both ranking first nationally by a wide margin and behind the GDP of only twelve and eleven countries, respectively.
York City Football Club is a professional association football club based in the city of York, North Yorkshire, England. The team compete in League Two, the fourth tier of league football in England, as of the 2015–16 season.
First founded in 1908, the club played seven seasons in non-League football before folding in 1917. A new club was formed in 1922, and played in the Midland League for seven years before joining the Football League. They played in the third tier until 1959, when they were promoted for the first time. York achieved their best run in the FA Cup in 1954–55, when they met Newcastle United in the semi-final. They fluctuated between the Third and Fourth Divisions, before spending two seasons in the Second Division in the 1970s. York first played at Wembley Stadium in 1993, when they won the Third Division play-off final. At the end of 2003–04 they lost their Football League status after being relegated from the Third Division. The 2011–12 FA Trophy was the first national knockout competition won by York, and they returned into the Football League that season.

You may remember that a few months ago, we here at FilmBuff presented the film Florent: Queen of the Meat Market. The movie, directed by David Sigal, was a perfect fit for FilmBuff, as it tells the story of an underdog's rise to restaurant legend and the kind of royalty that only a unique NYC neighborhood like the MPD can bestow upon a man like Florent Morellet. In the clip below, (available to view on our YouTube channel,) we present a follow-up of sorts on Florent, and what he's been up to since the restaurant closed down. If the movie chronicled the life of the Florent restaurant, this visit is a mini-sequel. Watch as Florent gives us a tour of the town as only its ever-reigning queen could: with flair and fondness.
Premiered Tuesday, June 7 at the 1st Annual Meeting of the Meatpacking BID, hosted by Samsung 837.
I've been shooting with the Red Epic for the last two weeks on a project with Under Armour. On an off night Ryann and I decided to head up to the Meatpacking District and get a few shots as the sun was setting. Not much thought went into this except to shoot some slowmotion and throw in some lens flares. Mostly just went out to have some fun and to play with this awesome camera for a bit. She's pretty. Tuesday, July 21, 2015 6:30 – 8:00 P.M. Efrain John Gonzalez was born in the Bronx, raised in Long Island, and moved to Manhattan in 1975, where he dropped out of college to drive a taxi. He would drive through New York armed with an old Nikon camera and photograph the streets and the people who made the city come alive at night. In the 1980's he discovered the underground cultures and private clubs of Greenwich Village and the Meatpacking District, and recorded this night culture that flourished in the dark and seedy streets, piers, clubs, and bars. His photography is a window to a past that is being erased by market forces and the passage of time. Published in the New York Times, Time Out magazine, and the Village Voice, Gonzalez has two photos in the permanent collection of the Museum ...
I failed once again
I have not found just what I need
it comes back to you in the end
I'll take your call, and follow your lead
so maybe you should come to the district
'cause two years is nothing more than
a time to reset the score and
reinvent the wheel again and
maybe fall in love again
so maybe I should fly to the rockies
I'd take a break from moving on and
slow it down to speed this up, we'd
maybe see what this thing's made of, and
maybe fall in love in the end
this winter offered up
a cold wake up call from this sleep to
the things that matter more
like you
like a dream
like a fire in me, so deep
so maybe you should come to the district
'cause you say this is the good stuff, and
holding you would not be too tough, we'd
maybe see what this thing's made of, and
maybe fall in love again
so maybe I could change my life then
I'd learn to love someone else but me, or
maybe give you everything that you need, or
maybe think of you while falling asleep, and
maybe fall in love in the end
and you know...
that I find you waiting here
at a similar point in space and mind so
I must step past this fear
I know we have a lifetime ahead to find
to make my life work
what else can I do
if you're waiting for me
I am ready for you
and I'm ready to see
your point of view
now we must face the front
and throw the past
past all we leave behind
never thinking of the pain we've cause each other
and give only love this time
only love this time
so maybe you should come to the district (come to the district)
maybe you should come to the district (come to the district)
maybe you should come to the district (come to the district)
maybe you should come to the district (come to the district)
maybe you should come to the district (come to the district)
maybe you should come to the district (come to the district)
