The explosion at Chernobyl was ten times worse than that at Hiroshima and was due to a combination of human error and imperfect technology. Using a real-time split-screen format reminiscent of the hit series, 24, this programme examines the 60 critical minutes leading up to the explosion at the power station on 26th April 1986.
Each minute unfolds narrating the events from the perspectives of key characters involved including Chernobyl's deputy chief engineer and his staff in the control room as well as innocent bystanders, the wife of one of Chernobyl's workers and two fishermen working in Chernobyl's warm waste waters.
With an extraordinary combination of drama and state of the art CGI graphics, Disaster at Chernobyl climaxes with the reconstructon of the final seconds leading to the disaster, the explosion itself and its terrifying aftermath.

On April 26, 1986, Ukraine marked the sad 30th anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster.
The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the city of Pripyat, then located in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union (USSR). An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of the western USSR and Europe.

Moscow tried to hide the disaster for 2 days before finally admitting the accident. Evacuation began long before the accident was publicly known throughout the Union. Only on 28 April, after radiation levels set off alarms at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant in Sweden, over 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) from the Chernobyl Plant, did the Soviet Union publicly admit that an accident had occurred. At 21:02 that evening a 20-second announcement was read in the TV news program Vremya:
There has been an accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. One of the nuclear reactors was damaged. The effects of the accident are being remedied. Assistance has been provided for any affected people. An investigative commission has been set up.

This was the entirety of the announcement of the accident.
The nearby city of Pripyat was not immediately evacuated. The townspeople went about their usual business, completely oblivious to what had just happened. By 11:00 on 27 April, buses had arrived in Pripyat to start the evacuation.
Thirty-one deaths are directly attributed to the accident, all among the reactor staff and emergency workers. An UNSCEAR report places the total confirmed deaths from radiation at 64 as of 2008. The Chernobyl Forum predicts the eventual death toll could reach 4,000 among those exposed to the highest levels of radiation (200,000 emergency workers, 116,000 evacuees and 270,000 residents of the most contaminated areas).

The official Soviet casualty count of 31 deaths has been disputed, and long-term effects such as cancers and deformities are still being accounted for.

It has been 30 years since the Chernobyl disaster - the worst nuclear catastrophe in human history.
Back in 1986, Yuriy Andreyev worked at the Chernobyl nuclear plant and was one of the engineers who helped contain the fallout of the accident.
In 2012 he gave his account of the events to BBC Ukrainian, which have been animated to tell the full story.

El accidente de Chernóbil fue un accidente nuclear sucedido en la central nuclear de Chernóbil (Ucrania) el 26 de abril de 1986. Considerado, junto con el Accidente nuclear de Fukushima I en Japón de 2011, como el más grave en la Escala Internacional de Accidentes Nucleares (accidente mayor, nivel 7). Se considera uno de los mayores desastres medioambientales de la historia.
Aquel día, durante una prueba en la que se simulaba un corte de suministro eléctrico, un aumento súbito de potencia en el reactor 4 de esta central nuclear, produjo el sobrecalentamiento del núcleo del reactor nuclear, lo que terminó provocando la explosión del hidrógeno acumulado en su interior. La cantidad de dióxido de uranio, carburo de boro, óxido de europio, erbio, aleaciones de circonio y grafito expulsados, materiales radiactivos y/o tóxicos que se estimó fue unas 500 veces mayor que el liberado por la bomba atómica arrojada en Hiroshima en 1945, causó directamente la muerte de 31 personas y forzó al gobierno de la Unión Soviética a la evacuación de 116 000 personas provocando una alarma internacional al detectarse radiactividad en, al menos, 13 países de Europa central y oriental.
Después del accidente, se inició un proceso masivo de descontaminación, contención y mitigación que desempeñaron aproximadamente 600 000 personas denominadas liquidadores en las zonas circundantes al lugar del accidente y se aisló un área de 30 km de radio alrededor de la central nuclear conocida como Zona de alienación, que sigue aún vigente. Solo una pequeña parte de los liquidadores se vieron expuestos a altos índices de radiactividad. Los trabajos de contención sobre el reactor afectado evitaron una segunda explosión de consecuencias dramáticas que podría haber dejado inhabitable a toda Europa.
Dos personas, empleadas de la planta, murieron como consecuencia directa de la explosión esa misma noche y 31 en los tres meses siguientes. Mil personas recibieron grandes dosis de radiación durante el primer día después del accidente, 200.000 personas recibieron alrededor de 100 mSv, 20.000 cerca de 250 mSv y algunos 500 mSv. En total, 600.000 personas recibieron dosis de radiación por los trabajos de descontaminación posteriores al accidente. 5.000.000 de personas vivieron en áreas contaminadas y 400.000 en áreas gravemente contaminadas, hasta hoy no existen trabajos concluyentes sobre la incidencia real, y no teórica, de este accidente en la mortalidad poblacional.
Tras prolongadas negociaciones con el gobierno ucraniano, la comunidad internacional financió los costes del cierre definitivo de la central, completado en diciembre de 2000. Inmediatamente después del accidente se construyó un "sarcófago", para aislar el interior del exterior, que se ha visto degradado en el tiempo por diversos fenómenos naturales por lo que corre riesgo de desplomarse. Desde 2004 se lleva a cabo la construcción de un nuevo sarcófago para el reactor. El resto de reactores de la central están cerrados.

Chernobyl or Chornobyl (IPA /tʃɜːrˈnoʊbᵻl/; Ukrainian: Чорнобиль, pronounced [tʃɔrˈnɔbɪlʲ]; Russian: Чернобыль, pronounced [tɕɪrˈnobɨlʲ], Polish: Czarnobyl pronounced [tʂarˈnɔbɨl], Yiddish: טשערנאבל pronounced [tʃɛrnɔbl]) is a city in the restricted Chernobyl Exclusion Zone situated in Ivankiv Raion of northern Kiev Oblast, Ukraine near the border with Belarus. The city was the administrative center of Chernobyl Raion (district) from 1923 until it was disestablished in 1988. The city currently has 704 inhabitants.
The city was evacuated in 1986 due to the Chernobyl disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, located 14.5 kilometres (9.0 mi) north-northwest, the most disastrous single nuclear event in history. The power plant was within Chernobyl Raion, but the city was not the residence of the power plant workers. When the power plant was under construction, Pripyat, a city larger and closer to the power plant, had been built as home for the power plant workers.
After the accident the Chernobyl Raion administration was transferred to the neighboring Ivankiv Raion. Though the city today is mostly a ghost town, a small number of people reside in houses marked with signs stating that the "Owner of this house lives here". Workers on watch and administrative personnel of the Zone of Alienation are stationed in the city on a long-term basis. Before its evacuation, the city had about 14,000 residents. The city of Slavutych, specifically built for those evacuated from Pripyat, also received the population relocated from Chernobyl.

Nuclear power plant
A nuclear power plant is a thermal power station in which the heat source is a nuclear reactor. As is typical in all conventional thermal power stations the heat is used to generate steam which drives a steam turbine connected to an electric generator which produces electricity. As of 23 April 2014, the IAEA report there are 435 nuclear power reactors in operation operating in 31 countries. Nuclear power plants are usually considered to be base load stations, since fuel is a small part of the cost of production.
History
Electricity was generated by a nuclear reactor for the first time ever on September 3, 1948 at the X-10 Graphite Reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in the United States, and was the first nuclear power plant to power a light bulb. The second, larger experiment occurred on December 20, 1951 at the EBR-I experimental station near Arco, Idaho in the United States. On June 27, 1954, the world's first nuclear power plant to generate electricity for a power grid started operations at the Soviet city of Obninsk. The world's first full scale power station, Calder Hall in England opened on October 17, 1956.

Nuclear power is the use of nuclear reactions that release nuclear energy to generate heat, which most frequently is then used in steam turbines to produce electricity in a nuclear power station. The term includes nuclear fission, nuclear decay and nuclear fusion. Presently, the nuclear fission of elements in the actinide series of the periodic table produce the vast majority of nuclear energy in the direct service of humankind, with nuclear decay processes, primarily in the form of geothermal energy, and radioisotope thermoelectric generators, in niche uses making up the rest.
Nuclear (fission) power stations, excluding the contribution from naval nuclear fission reactors, provided 11% of the world's electricity in 2012, somewhat less than that generated by hydro-electric stations at 16%. Since electricity accounts for about 25% of humanity's energy usage with the majority of the rest coming from fossil fuel reliant sectors such as transport, manufacture and home heating, nuclear fission's contribution to the global final energy consumption is about 2.5%, a little more than the combined global electricity production from "new renewables"; wind, solar, biofuel and geothermal power, which together provided 2% of global final energy consumption in 2014.

El accidente de Chernóbil fue un accidente nuclear sucedido en la central nuclear de Chernóbil (Ucrania) el 26 de abril de 1986. Considerado, junto con el Accidente nuclear de Fukushima I en Japón de 2011, como el más grave en la Escala Internacional de Accidentes Nucleares (accidente mayor, nivel 7). Se considera uno de los mayores desastres medioambientales de la historia. Aquel día, durante una prueba en la que se simulaba un corte de suministro eléctrico, un aumento súbito de potencia en el reactor 4 de esta central nuclear, produjo el sobrecalentamiento del núcleo del reactor nuclear, lo que terminó provocando la explosión del hidrógeno acumulado en su interior. La cantidad de dióxido de uranio, carburo de boro, óxido de europio, erbio, aleaciones de circonio y grafito expulsados, materiales radiactivos y/o tóxicos que se estimó fue unas 500 veces mayor que el liberado por la bomba atómica arrojada en Hiroshima en 1945, causó directamente la muerte de 31 personas y forzó al gobierno de la Unión Soviética a la evacuación de 116 000 personas provocando una alarma internacional al detectarse radiactividad en, al menos, 13 países de Europa central y oriental. Después del accidente, se inició un proceso masivo de descontaminación, contención y mitigación que desempeñaron aproximadamente 600 000 personas denominadas liquidadores en las zonas circundantes al lugar del accidente y se aisló un área de 30 km de radio alrededor de la central nuclear conocida como Zona de alienación, que sigue aún vigente. Solo una pequeña parte de los liquidadores se vieron expuestos a altos índices de radiactividad. Los trabajos de contención sobre el reactor afectado evitaron una segunda explosión de consecuencias dramáticas que podría haber dejado inhabitable a toda Europa. Dos personas, empleadas de la planta, murieron como consecuencia directa de la explosión esa misma noche y 31 en los tres meses siguientes. Mil personas recibieron grandes dosis de radiación durante el primer día después del accidente, 200.000 personas recibieron alrededor de 100 mSv, 20.000 cerca de 250 mSv y algunos 500 mSv. En total, 600.000 personas recibieron dosis de radiación por los trabajos de descontaminación posteriores al accidente. 5.000.000 de personas vivieron en áreas contaminadas y 400.000 en áreas gravemente contaminadas, hasta hoy no existen trabajos concluyentes sobre la incidencia real, y no teórica, de este accidente en la mortalidad poblacional. Tras prolongadas negociaciones con el gobierno ucraniano, la comunidad internacional financió los costes del cierre definitivo de la central, completado en diciembre de 2000. Inmediatamente después del accidente se construyó un "sarcófago", para aislar el interior del exterior, que se ha visto degradado en el tiempo por diversos fenómenos naturales por lo que corre riesgo de desplomarse. Desde 2004 se lleva a cabo la construcción de un nuevo sarcófago para el reactor. El resto de reactores de la central están cerrados. -

The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the city of Pripyat, then located in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union (USSR). An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of the western USSR and Europe.

Moscow tried to hide the disaster for 2 days before finally admitting the accident. Evacuation began long before the accident was publicly known throughout the Union. Only on 28 April, after radiation levels set off alarms at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant in Sweden, over 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) from the Chernobyl Plant, did the Soviet Union publicly admit that an accident had occurred. At 21:02 that evening a 20-second announcement was read in the TV news program Vremya:
There has been an accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. One of the nuclear reactors was damaged. The effects of the accident are being remedied. Assistance has been provided for any affected people. An investigative commission has been set up.

This was the entirety of the announcement of the accident.
The nearby city of Pripyat was not immediately evacuated. The townspeople went about their usual business, completely oblivious to what had just happened. By 11:00 on 27 April, buses had arrived in Pripyat to start the evacuation.
Thirty-one deaths are directly attributed to the accident, all among the reactor staff and emergency workers. An UNSCEAR report places the total confirmed deaths from radiation at 64 as of 2008. The Chernobyl Forum predicts the eventual death toll could reach 4,000 among those exposed to the highest levels of radiation (200,000 emergency workers, 116,000 evacuees and 270,000 residents of the most contaminated areas).

Considerado, junto con el Accidente nuclear de Fukushima I en Japón de 2011, como el más grave en la Escala Internacional de Accidentes Nucleares (accidente mayor, nivel 7). Se considera uno de los mayores desastres medioambientales de la historia.
Aquel día, durante una prueba en la que se simulaba un corte de suministro eléctrico, un aumento súbito de potencia en el reactor 4 de esta central nuclear, produjo el sobrecalentamiento del núcleo del reactor nuclear, lo que terminó provocando la explosión del hidrógeno acumulado en su interior. La cantidad de dióxido de uranio, carburo de boro, óxido de europio, erbio, aleaciones de circonio y grafito expulsados, materiales radiactivos y/o tóxicos que se estimó fue unas 500 veces mayor que el liberado por la bomba atómica arrojada en Hiroshima en 1945, causó directamente la muerte de 31 personas y forzó al gobierno de la Unión Soviética a la evacuación de 116 000 personas provocando una alarma internacional al detectarse radiactividad en, al menos, 13 países de Europa central y oriental.
Después del accidente, se inició un proceso masivo de descontaminación, contención y mitigación que desempeñaron aproximadamente 600 000 personas denominadas liquidadores en las zonas circundantes al lugar del accidente y se aisló un área de 30 km de radio alrededor de la central nuclear conocida como Zona de alienación, que sigue aún vigente. Solo una pequeña parte de los liquidadores se vieron expuestos a altos índices de radiactividad. Los trabajos de contención sobre el reactor afectado evitaron una segunda explosión de consecuencias dramáticas que podría haber dejado inhabitable a toda Europa.
Dos personas, empleadas de la planta, murieron como consecuencia directa de la explosión esa misma noche y 31 en los tres meses siguientes. Mil personas recibieron grandes dosis de radiación durante el primer día después del accidente, 200.000 personas recibieron alrededor de 100 mSv, 20.000 cerca de 250 mSv y algunos 500 mSv. Thirty years after the worst nuclear accident in history, Chernobyl has become a tourist attraction. Tens of thousands of people are believed to have died prematurely from the catastrophe which spread a radioactive cloud over Europe in 1986, but last year 17,000 people visited the so-called exclusion zone anyway. Was I exposed to lots of radiation? In short, no. My dosage of radiation would of been about the same as I would have received on a long haul flight. You also get checked for contamination on the way out of the zone.
Did I have to wear any protective clothing? No, but you are not allowed to wear shorts or short sleeve shirts. You must wear long trousers and jumpers, boots or other hard wearing shoes. Open shoes like sandals are not allowed.
How did I get access to Chernobyl? You can arrange a visit through a company called Solo-East. Google them! A private tour like I took costs $500 a day. I recommend 2-3 days if you can afford it. You will see hardly anything in just one day. Unfortunately, you are no longer allowed inside buildings.
What camera did I use? It was a Canon 7D with a Canon 17-40mm L, Canon 17-85mm, Canon 70-300mm & Sigma 10-22mm. Sound was captured with a Sennheiser wireless radio mic and recorded on a Roland R05.

What is that bashing sound around the 15 minute mark? The foundations for the new shelter are being bashed into the ground as the soil is too dangerous and radioactive to dig up. The new shelter will cover the crumbling one that currently covers reactor 4. The new shelter will be completed in 2015.
Was I exposed to lots of radiation? In short, no. My dosage of radiation would of been about the same as I would have received on a long haul flight. You also get checked for contamination on the way out of the zone.
Did I have to wear any protective clothing? No, but you are not allowed to wear shorts or short sleeve shirts. You must wear long trousers and jumpers, boots or other hard wearing shoes. Open shoes like sandals are not allowed.
How did I get access to Chernobyl? You can arrange a visit through a company called Solo-East. Google them! A private tour like I took costs $500 a day. I recommend 2-3 days if you can afford it. You will see hardly anything in just one day. Unfortunately, you are no longer allowed inside buildings.
What camera did I use? It was a Canon 7D with a Canon 17-40mm L, Canon 17-85mm, Canon 70-300mm & Sigma 10-22mm. Sound was captured with a Sennheiser wireless radio mic and recorded on a Roland R05.
