They love to chomp on insects and will search the desert trees of the United States, where they’ll build roosting nests all year long. In Arizona, a pair of Verdin were recorded building 11 nests in a single year. Since they live in the desert, they’ll spend the hotter months sitting in the shade, usually panting and opening and closing its wings to keep cool. 8 - The Crimson Chat – The Crimson Chat lives primarily in Australia and are typical;;y 4 to 5 inches long and weigh just 10 grams. They feast on insects and spiders it finds on the ground or in bushes. The Crimson Chat also has a brush-like tongue which they use to extract nectar from low growing flowers. When they’re ready to lay eggs, the Crimson Chat will build a nest made of twigs, grass and anything else it can find that’s useful close to the ground. Baby Crimson Chats need to watch out for foxes and cats while they still live in their nest. 7 - The Brown Gerygone – The Brown Gerygone used to be known as the Brown Warbler and lives mostly on the coast of eastern Australia in mountain and coastal rainforest, mangroves and wet gullies. These small birds are usually on the prowl for insects to eat in the foliage. They grow to about 4 inches and weigh just 5 grams. Their coloring is a deep greyish green or dull brown. It has a red brown eye and white eyebrow. The Brown Gerygone travels in small parties of usually just two birds. 6 - The Tropical Parula – The Tropical Parula is 4.3 inches long and resides from northern Mexico through Central Argentina into Trinidad and Tobago. The Tropical Parula has a yellow belly with blue and gray upperparts. These birds like to look for food – usually insects - high up in the trees and slightly lower, typically along streams. They will sometimes even pluck an insect out of mid-air. It sound is a high pitch buzzing that could be mistaken for an insect. 5 - Short-tailed Pygmy Tyrant – The Short tailed Pygmy Tyrant lives mostly in the Amazon and in South America. It resides in tall muggy forests and it likes to catch insects by waiting below leaves and then catching them from below. The Short tailed Pygmy Tyrant has an average length of 2.6 inches and weighs just 4.2 grams. Because of its almost mechanical looking wing movement, the Short tailed pygmy Tyrant is often mistaken for an insect. On the same note, the sound it makes is often confused for small frogs or crickets, as it sounds like more of a chirping rather than singing. 4 - The Golden Headed Cisticola – Also known as the bright headed cisticola, this bird can be found from Australia to India. Weighing in at just 10 grams, the Gold headed Cisticola is about 4 inches in length. The cool thing about this bird is that it’s able to sew like a human. It uses threads stolen from spider webs and can stitch together a nest with ease. The Gold Headed Cisticola likes to eat insects and seeds and when eggs are laid, the female will incubate them on her own. 3 - The Weebill – The Weebill is the smallest bird in Australia and can grow up to 3 and a half inches long and weighs around 6 grams. They love to eat bugs and larvae and spend a good amount of time searching in forests, in the trees for its meals. It’s recognizable by its grey bill and olive yellow feathers. The Weebill is a songbird who starts building nests for breeding early in the season, usually around July. The female will lay around three eggs that are cream colored with brown speckles. 2 - Short-tailed Woodstar – The short tailed woodstar is a type of hummingbird which lives in Ecuador and Peru. It likes a subtropical dry area and feeds down low to the ground on flowers found around houses and will also eat some insects. It measures just under 3 inches and is the smallest bird in South America. The short tailed woodstar’s feathers are a shiny green with small patches of white, and its tail is short – but we bet you saw that one coming! 1 - The Bee hummingbird – The Bee Hummingbird is the smallest living bird and is mostly found in Cuba. It measures 2 to 2 and a half inches and weighs a mere 2 grams. The Bee Hummingbird is no bigger than a large insect and is a strong flier. The iridescent colors of this bird truly spectacular, ranging from blue to green to pink. The females only lay two eggs at a time and use bark, cobwebs and lichen to build their cup-shaped nests.
