V. Shantaram, renowned Indian producer-director-actor, most known for his films like Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani (1946), Amar Bhoopali (1951), Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje (1955), Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1957) and Navrang (1959), to the path breaking Duniya Na Mane (1937) and Pinjara (1973).
He directed his first film, "Netaji Pulkar" in 1927, and in 1929, founded the Prabhat Film Company along with V.G. Damle, K.R. Dhaiber, S. Fatelal and S.B. Kulkarni, which he left in 1942 and to form "Rajkamal Kala Mandir" in Mumbai, in time 'Rajkamal' became one of most sophisticated studios of the country.
He was awarded the Indian film industry's highest award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, in 1985 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1992.

Story:
The film, told in flash-back, starts with a few people troubling a disheveled, insane man holding a bedding. The mad man is Mohan (Pradeep Kumar) who finally sits down with a sympathiser and starts narrating the story. Mohan meets a young widow, Padmini (Jayshree) taking medicine for her dying mother. Padmini's mother, from her death-bed, warns her about befriending young men as she's a widow and society demands that she live alone with just a white sheet as a companion, for that's her life as a widow. Following her mother's death, Padmini goes to her paternal uncle's house to live. Her uncle has gone to Africa and her Aunt treats her badly. Mohan falls ill thinking about Padmini's situation and her rebuff when he pursues her. He is looked after by his mother and young sister (Baby Rajshree). Padmini is made to work as a maid in her Uncle's house but has a kind cousin sister, Bharti (Chandrakanta). Mohan arrives there on some work and the Aunt has chosen him as a suitable boy for Bharti's marriage. Mohan sees Padmini and tells her how he feels, which is overheard by the Aunt. The Aunt throws Padmini out of the house to fend for herself. The story continues with the problems Padmini faces, Mohan's search for Padmini and her death when she sets the house left by her mother, on fire. Mohan finds the bedding in the aftermath of the fire and goes insane.

Synopsis: Vijay is the son of a line of temple sculptors who has not touched his craft since he became a young man. Vijay lives an impoverished lifestyle along with his widower father who works as a guide for tourists. One day while guiding a group of young women, his father asks Vijay to assist them. He does so quite nonchalantly, and is corrected by one, who later identifies herself as Vidya. He is inspired by her beauty and makes several sculptures. Both continue to meet, fall in love, but face opposition from her mother. Unfortunately, her mother has been preparing her with dancing lessons in order to sell Vidya's life and virginity to a rich man Dhanraj, who will take both of them into his palace to keep this girl as a part of his collection of pleasures. When the day comes for this decision to be revealed, Vidya escapes from home into the arms of Vijay. Although Vijay's father is hostile toward meddling with these matters and has no confidence that Vidya could tolerate their lifestyle of poverty. With the help of Chacha and his father, Vijay and Vidya do get married, and he makes several sculptures. One day, Vijay and his wife are approached by a patron from the big city who is looking to build a house for the sake of an eccentric gentleman who has lost his beloved daughter, a girl whose whereabouts remain unknown.He is then asked by an armless sculptor to accompany him to Delhi, which he does. After several months he returns home to find Chacha has died, and Vidya, unable to live in poverty, has moved back with her mother and is now not only living with Dhanraj but also is the mother of a young male child. Why?

V. Shantaram, renowned Indian film producer, filmmaker, and actor, most known for his films like Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani (1946), Amar Bhoopali (1951), Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje (1955), Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1957) and Navrang (1959), to the path breaking Duniya Na Mane (1937) and Pinjara (1973).
He directed his first film, "Netaji Palkar" in 1927, and in 1929, founded the Prabhat Film Company along with V.G. Damle, K.R. Dhaiber, S. Fatelal and S.B. Kulkarni, which he left in 1942 and to form "Rajkamal Kala Mandir" in Mumbai , in time 'Rajkamal' became one of most sophisticated studios of the country .
He was praised by Charlie Chaplin for his Marathi film MANOOS (English: Man). Charlie Chaplin reportedly liked the film very much.
He was awarded the Indian film industry's highest award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, in 1985 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1992.
V. Shantaram was born Rajaram Vankudre Shantaram , on November 18, 1901, in the erstwhile princely state of Kolhapur in present day Maharashtra . He was a Jain and born to a reputed Jain family of Kolhapur. During his lifetime he was also honoured with Jain Samaj Ratna award given to outstanding Jains.
His autobiography titled, 'Shantaram' was published in Hindi and Marathi .
V. Shantaram died on October 30, 1990 in Mumbai . The 'V. Shantaram Award' was consitituted by Central Government and Maharashtra State Government, and the V. Shantaram Motion Picture Scientific Research and Cultural Foundation, established in 1993, shortly after his death, and offers various awards to film makers, the award is presented on 18 November each year being Shantaram's birth anniversary
He married thrice; His first marriage was with Vimla, his second marriage was to the actress Jayashree, with whom he had two children: the actress Rajshree whom he launched in the film Geet Gaya Patharon Ne , and a son, Kiran Kumar, sometime sheriff of Bombay and Marathi film director.
His third wife was actress, Sandhya who was his co-star in Do Aankhen Barah Haath as well the heroine of his films like Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje and Navrang. His other two children are Prabhat Kumar and Madhura Pandit, who is married to classical singer, Pandit Jasraj and have a daughter actress, Durga Jasraj ].
He also introduced film actor Jeetendra in Hindi cinema with the film Geet Gaaya Patharonay. He was fondly called Annasaheb.

V. Shantaram, renowned Indian producer-director-actor, most known for his films like Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani (1946), Amar Bhoopali (1951), Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje (1955), Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1957) and Navrang (1959), to the path breaking Duniya Na Mane (1937) and Pinjara (1973).
He directed his first film, "Netaji Pulkar" in 1927, and in 1929, founded the Prabhat Film Company along with V.G. Damle, K.R. Dhaiber, S. Fatelal and S.B. Kulkarni, which he left in 1942 and to form "Rajkamal Kala Mandir" in Mumbai, in time 'Rajkamal' became one of most sophisticated studios of the country.
He was awarded the Indian film industry's highest award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, in 1985 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1992.

Story:
The film, told in flash-back, starts with a few people troubling a disheveled, insane man holding a bedding. The mad man is Mohan (Pradeep Kumar) who finally sits down with a sympathiser and starts narrating the story. Mohan meets a young widow, Padmini (Jayshree) taking medicine for her dying mother. Padmini's mother, from her death-bed, warns her about befriending young men as she's a widow and society demands that she live alone with just a white sheet as a companion, for that's her life as a widow. Following her mother's death, Padmini goes to her paternal uncle's house to live. Her uncle has gone to Africa and her Aunt treats her badly. Mohan falls ill thinking about Padmini's situation and her rebuff when he pursues her. He is looked after by his mother and young sister (Baby Rajshree). Padmini is made to work as a maid in her Uncle's house but has a kind cousin sister, Bharti (Chandrakanta). Mohan arrives there on some work and the Aunt has chosen him as a suitable boy for Bharti's marriage. Mohan sees Padmini and tells her how he feels, which is overheard by the Aunt. The Aunt throws Padmini out of the house to fend for herself. The story continues with the problems Padmini faces, Mohan's search for Padmini and her death when she sets the house left by her mother, on fire. Mohan finds the bedding in the aftermath of the fire and goes insane.

Synopsis: Vijay is the son of a line of temple sculptors who has not touched his craft since he became a young man. Vijay lives an impoverished lifestyle along with his widower father who works as a guide for tourists. One day while guiding a group of young women, his father asks Vijay to assist them. He does so quite nonchalantly, and is corrected by one, who later identifies herself as Vidya. He is inspired by her beauty and makes several sculptures. Unfortunately, her mother has been preparing her with dancing lessons in order to sell Vidya's life and virginity to a rich man Dhanraj, who will take both of them into his palace to keep this girl as a part of his collection of pleasures. When the day comes for this decision to be revealed, Vidya escapes from home into the arms of Vijay. Although Vijay's father is hostile toward meddling with these matters and has no confidence that Vidya could tolerate their lifestyle of poverty. With the help of Chacha and his father, Vijay and Vidya do get married, and he makes several sculptures. One day, Vijay and his wife are approached by a patron from the big city who is looking to build a house for the sake of an eccentric gentleman who has lost his beloved daughter, a girl whose whereabouts remain unknown.He is then asked by an armless sculptor to accompany him to Delhi, which he does. After several months he returns home to find Chacha has died, and Vidya, unable to live in poverty, has moved back with her mother and is now not only living with Dhanraj but also is the mother of a young male child. Why?

V.SHANTARAM ( Rajaram Vankudre Shantaram ) :-
V. Shantaram, renowned Indian film producer, filmmaker, and actor, most known for his films like Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani (1946), Amar Bhoopali (1951), Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje (1955), Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1957) and Navrang (1959), to the path breaking Duniya Na Mane (1937) and Pinjara (1973).
He directed his first film, "Netaji Palkar" in 1927, and in 1929, founded the Prabhat Film Company along with V.G. Damle, K.R. Dhaiber, S. Fatelal and S.B. Kulkarni, which he left in 1942 and to form "Rajkamal Kala Mandir" in Mumbai , in time 'Rajkamal' became one of most sophisticated studios of the country .
He was praised by Charlie Chaplin for his Marathi film MANOOS (English: Man). Charlie Chaplin reportedly liked the film very much.
He was awarded the Indian film industry's highest award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, in 1985 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1992.
V. Shantaram was born Rajaram Vankudre Shantaram , on November 18, 1901, in the erstwhile princely state of Kolhapur in present day Maharashtra . He was a Jain and born to a reputed Jain family of Kolhapur. During his lifetime he was also honoured with Jain Samaj Ratna award given to outstanding Jains.
His autobiography titled, 'Shantaram' was published in Hindi and Marathi .
V. Shantaram died on October 30, 1990 in Mumbai . The 'V. Shantaram Award' was consitituted by Central Government and Maharashtra State Government, and the V. Shantaram Motion Picture Scientific Research and Cultural Foundation, established in 1993, shortly after his death, and offers various awards to film makers, the award is presented on 18 November each year being Shantaram's birth anniversary
He married thrice; His first marriage was with Vimla, his second marriage was to the actress Jayashree, with whom he had two children: the actress Rajshree whom he launched in the film Geet Gaya Patharon Ne , and a son, Kiran Kumar, sometime sheriff of Bombay and Marathi film director.
His third wife was actress, Sandhya who was his co-star in Do Aankhen Barah Haath as well the heroine of his films like Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje and Navrang. His other two children are Prabhat Kumar and Madhura Pandit, who is married to classical singer, Pandit Jasraj and have a daughter actress, Durga Jasraj ].
He also introduced film actor Jeetendra in Hindi cinema with the film Geet Gaaya Patharonay. He was fondly called Annasaheb.

Story:
The film, told in flash-back, starts with a few people troubling a disheveled, insane man holding a bedding. The mad man is Mohan (Pradeep Kumar) who finally sits down with a sympathiser and starts narrating the story. Mohan meets a young widow, Padmini (Jayshree) taking medicine for her dying mother. Padmini's mother, from her death-bed, warns her about befriending young men as she's a widow and society demands that she live alone with just a white sheet as a companion, for that's her life as a widow. Following her mother's death, Padmini goes to her paternal uncle's house to live. Her uncle has gone to Africa and her Aunt treats her badly. Mohan falls ill thinking about Padmini's situation and her rebuff when he pursues her. He is looked after by his mother and young sister (Baby Rajshree). Padmini is made to work as a maid in her Uncle's house but has a kind cousin sister, Bharti (Chandrakanta). Mohan arrives there on some work and the Aunt has chosen him as a suitable boy for Bharti's marriage. Mohan sees Padmini and tells her how he feels, which is overheard by the Aunt. The Aunt throws Padmini out of the house to fend for herself. The story continues with the problems Padmini faces, Mohan's search for Padmini and her death when she sets the house left by her mother, on fire. Mohan finds the bedding in the aftermath of the fire and goes insane.

Synopsis: Vijay is the son of a line of temple sculptors who has not touched his craft since he became a young man. Vijay lives an impoverished lifestyle along with his widower father who works as a guide for tourists. One day while guiding a group of young women, his father asks Vijay to assist them. He does so quite nonchalantly, and is corrected by one, who later identifies herself as Vidya. He is inspired by her beauty and makes several sculptures. Both continue to meet, fall in love, but face opposition from her mother. Unfortunately, her mother has been preparing her with dancing lessons in order to sell Vidya's life and virginity to a rich man Dhanraj, who will take both of them into his palace to keep this girl as a part of his collection of pleasures. When the day comes for this decision to be revealed, Vidya escapes from home into the arms of Vijay. Although Vijay's father is hostile toward meddling with these matters and has no confidence that Vidya could tolerate their lifestyle of poverty. With the help of Chacha and his father, Vijay and Vidya do get married, and he makes several sculptures. One day, Vijay and his wife are approached by a patron from the big city who is looking to build a house for the sake of an eccentric gentleman who has lost his beloved daughter, a girl whose whereabouts remain unknown.He is then asked by an armless sculptor to accompany him to Delhi, which he does. After several months he returns home to find Chacha has died, and Vidya, unable to live in poverty, has moved back with her mother and is now not only living with Dhanraj but also is the mother of a young male child. Why?

V.SHANTARAM ( Rajaram Vankudre Shantaram ) :-
V. Shantaram, renowned Indian film producer, filmmaker, and actor, most known for his films like Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani (1946), Amar Bhoopali (1951), Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje (1955), Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1957) and Navrang (1959), to the path breaking Duniya Na Mane (1937) and Pinjara (1973).
He directed his first film, "Netaji Palkar" in 1927, and in 1929, founded the Prabhat Film Company along with V.G. Damle, K.R. Dhaiber, S. Fatelal and S.B. Kulkarni, which he left in 1942 and to form "Rajkamal Kala Mandir" in Mumbai , in time 'Rajkamal' became one of most sophisticated studios of the country .
He was praised by Charlie Chaplin for his Marathi film MANOOS (English: Man). Charlie Chaplin reportedly liked the film very much.
He was awarded the Indian film industry's highest award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, in 1985 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1992.
V. Shantaram was born Rajaram Vankudre Shantaram , on November 18, 1901, in the erstwhile princely state of Kolhapur in present day Maharashtra . He was a Jain and born to a reputed Jain family of Kolhapur. During his lifetime he was also honoured with Jain Samaj Ratna award given to outstanding Jains.
His autobiography titled, 'Shantaram' was published in Hindi and Marathi .
V. Shantaram died on October 30, 1990 in Mumbai . The 'V. Shantaram Award' was consitituted by Central Government and Maharashtra State Government, and the V. Shantaram Motion Picture Scientific Research and Cultural Foundation, established in 1993, shortly after his death, and offers various awards to film makers, the award is presented on 18 November each year being Shantaram's birth anniversary
He married thrice; His first marriage was with Vimla, his second marriage was to the actress Jayashree, with whom he had two children: the actress Rajshree whom he launched in the film Geet Gaya Patharon Ne , and a son, Kiran Kumar, sometime sheriff of Bombay and Marathi film director.
His third wife was actress, Sandhya who was his co-star in Do Aankhen Barah Haath as well the heroine of his films like Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje and Navrang. His other two children are Prabhat Kumar and Madhura Pandit, who is married to classical singer, Pandit Jasraj and have a daughter actress, Durga Jasraj ].
He also introduced film actor Jeetendra in Hindi cinema with the film Geet Gaaya Patharonay. He was fondly called Annasaheb.
