Ilorin is the state capital of Kwara in Western Nigeria. As of 2007, it had a population of 847,582, making it the 13th largest city in Nigeria by population.
Ilorin was founded by the Yoruba, one of the three largest ethnic groups in Nigeria, in 1450. It became a provincial military headquarters of the ancient Oyo Empire, it later become a Northern Nigeria protectorate when the Shehu Alimi, a descendant of Shehu Usman Dan-Fodio, took control of the city through the spread of Islamic religion. The capital was occupied by the Royal Niger Company in 1897 and its lands incorporated into the British colony of Northern Nigeria in 1900, although the emirate continued to perform ceremonial functions. Although the city retains a strong Islamic influence from the northern incursions, Christianity is now widely practised in the city due to the significant immigration of people from other parts of Kwara State and other parts of Nigeria into the city. Ilorin is the largest city and the official capital of Kwara State.
The University of Ilorin, also known as Unilorin, is a university in Ilorin, Nigeria.
It was established by a decree of the Federal Military Government in 1975 and is a federal government owned tertiary institution of education located in Ilorin, Kwara State, western Nigeria. The ancient city of Ilorin, capital of Kwara State, is about 300 km from Lagos and 500 km from Abuja, the country's administrative capital. In August 2014, the school was ranked as the best university in Nigeria by 4icu.
The university began as a University College affiliated to the oldest university in Nigeria in 1975 under the leadership of the then principal, Dr T.N. Tamuno. The first set of 200 students, selected following an entrance examination, were admitted into residence on 23 October 1976, while academic work started on 25 October after the Principal’s address. The University College started with three academic faculties of Arts, Science and Education.
In October 1977, the institution attained full autonomous status with appointment of the then Principal, Professor O.O Akinkugbe as first vice chancellor. The immediate past vice chancellor, Professor [Is-haq Oloyede] is the first Unilorin alumnus to occupy that position. The staff and student populations now stand at 3,040 and 20,084 respectively.
The University of Ibadan(UI) is the oldest and one of the most prestigious Nigerian universities, and is located five miles (8 kilometres) from the centre of the major city of Ibadan in Western Nigeria.
Besides the College of Medicine, there are now ten other faculties: Arts , Science, Agriculture and Forestry, Social Sciences, Education, Veterinary Medicine, Technology, Law, Public Health and Dentistry. The University has residential and sports facilities for staff and students on campus, as well as separate botanical and zoological gardens.
The origins of the university are in Yaba College, founded in 1932 in Yaba, Lagos as the first tertiary educational institute in Nigeria. Yaba College was transferred to Ibadan, becoming the University College of Ibadan, in 1948. The university was founded on its own site on 17 November 1948. In late 1963, on the university playing-fields, with a celebration marked by talking drums, the Rt. Hon. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, first Prime Minister of independent Nigeria, became the first Chancellor of its independent university. The first Nigerian vice chancellor of the university was Kenneth Dike, after whom the University of Ibadan's library is named.

The Arab world (Arabic: العالم العربي al-ʿālam al-ʿarabī; formally: الوطن العربي al-wațan al-ʿarabī), also known as the Arab nation (الأمة العربية al-ʾummah al-ʿarabīah), consists of the 22 Arabic-speaking countries of the Arab League.
The standard definition of the Arab world comprises the 22 countries and territories of the Arab League. These Arab states occupy an area stretching from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Arabian Sea in the east, and from the Mediterranean Sea in the north to the Horn of Africa and the Indian Ocean in the southeast. The Arab world has a combined population of around 422 million people, with over half under 25 years of age.
The sentiment of Arab nationalism arose in the second half of the 19th century along with other nationalist movements within the Ottoman Empire. The Arab League was formed in 1945 to represent the interests of the Arabs, and especially to pursue the political unification of the Arab countries, a project known as Pan-Arabism.

In May 2007, we (Alex, Maneesh and I) drove 3 hours west of Ilorin into the Old Oyo National park to explore the ruins of the Oyo Empire. This once great city state was overrun by Usman Dan Fodio over 200 years ago. The only things you can 'see' now are the cave where the first settlers made their base, the cave of pythons round the corner that used to protect the settlers and the remains of one wall of a building. The once mighty Oyo empire is now less a ruin than a memory held in the air inside the forest...
In May 2007, Alex, Maneesh and I set out on a tour of Yorubaland. We visited Abeokuta, the ruins of old Oyo, Ilorin, Esie, Iragbiji (for the Egungun festival) and Osogbo. The highlight of the trip was spending time at the Sacred Forest (the Osun Grove), silently watching the monkeys on the other side of the Osun river, and then meeting Susanne Wenger later that day in town. Wenger (who died in January 2009) had lived in Osogbo for over 50 years. Her journey into the core of the Yoruba spirit-world and her work preserving the Sacred Forest (now a Unesco World Heritage Site) mean she is highly revered in the town and more generally among the Yoruba. This is (I think) the last recorded interview with her on film.
A Journey to the 1980s and fine institutions of learning in Nigeria. This is a tribute to the fine scholars and institutions of ABU, Unilorin and the NDA. Special thanks to the interviewer Professor M. Okome of Brooklyn College, CUNY.
Panel 5 - Uncharted Destinations and Communities Peter Adebayo, University of Ilorin, Nigeria A Sense of Place: Arab World Diasporas and Migrations The voluntary or forcible movement of peoples from and to the Arab world has rarely received inclusive and comprehensive treatment by students and scholars of the region. Yet historically, the Arab world has been at the crossroads of momentous diasporic migrations and settlements that were impelled by a host of social, political, and environmental factors, ranging from economic or cultural opportunities and large-scale demands for labor to political unrest, ethnic discrimination, and international conflict. Indeed, since the imposition of European colonial rule in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the subsequent emergence of indepen...

Betrayed by fate
We emerge with burning eyes
And empty hands
It is too late
We cannot save
All we held so close
It has slipped through our hands
Desperate and lost
We fall to our knees
Struck by the loss
Of warmth and precious dreams
Your world is like mine
I find solace in your eyes’ caress
Drown my tears in wine
You bring beauty to my emptiness
Here I find you
You kill the pain in me
Hide my heart inside you
Here you set me free
Our worlds collide
We're pulled into this loneliness
Tears blur my sight
I long for your tenderness
Here I find you
You kill the pain in me
Hide my heart inside you
Here you set me free
Our hearts lie bare
We were beaten
And left alone
Caught in the despair
Of not knowing how to go on
When the love for life is gone
It is too late
We cannot save
All we held so close
It has slipped through our hands
Desperate and lost
We fall to our knees
Struck by the loss
Of warmth and precious dreams
Here I find you
You kill the pain in me
I hide my heart inside you
Here you set me free
Here I find you
Hold on to me
Leave the pain behind you
