The Cinefamily is a non-profit American cinematheque located in West Hollywood, at the historic Silent Movie Theatre. The Cinefamily's mission statement is to "reinvigorate the movie-going experience by fostering a spirit of community and a sense of discovery."
Cinefamily follows a member-based ticketing system by which a tax-deductible donation provides universal access to all screenings and events. There is also an individual ticket system in effect for non-members, or those who do not make a pledge commitment.
In 2007, Hadrian Belove, founder of Cinefile Video, a specialty video store, and with brothers Dan and Sammy Harkham, also owners of the nearby Family bookstore, founded The Cinefamily. Cinefamily officially opened its doors on Halloween of 2007.
Cinefamily is known for its innovative and broad range of programs, from early silent to contemporary films, live comedy, live music, found footage, mixed media and other special events, and extended form post-screening Q&As. They have mounted original retrospectives on filmmakers Jim Henson, Jerry Lewis, John Cassavetes, and Andrzej Zulawski and have commissioned live film scores by musicians such as No Age,Stephin Merritt and Espers.
Los Angeles (i/lɒs ˈændʒəlᵻs/ loss AN-jə-ləs or loss AN-jə-liss) (Spanish for "The Angels"), officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the second-largest city in the United States after New York City, the most populous city in the state of California, and the county seat of Los Angeles County.
Situated in Southern California, Los Angeles is known for its mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, sprawling metropolis, and as a major center of the American entertainment industry. Los Angeles lies in a large coastal basin surrounded on three sides by mountains reaching up to and over 10,000 feet (3,000 m).
Historically home to the Chumash and Tongva, Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would become Alta California. The city was officially founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. The city experienced rapid growth with the discovery of oil.
Jerry Lewis AM (born March 16, 1926) is an American comedian, actor, singer, film producer, screenwriter and film director and is known for his slapstick humor in film, television, stage and radio. His career began in 1946, with an act together with Dean Martin, forming the team of Martin and Lewis, which performed in live nightclubs, television programs, radio shows and theatrical movies before 1956, when the two men parted ways, after ten years as a duo.
Then since 1957, as a solo, Lewis went on to star in many more films, such as The Delicate Delinquent (his debut as film producer), The Bellboy (his debut as film director, screenwriter and development of video assist) and The Nutty Professor as well as many television shows and appearances, music albums, live concerts and more. From 1966 to 2010, Lewis hosted the annual Labor Day Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association for over forty years and served as national chairman of the organization.
Lewis has won several awards for lifetime achievements from the American Comedy Awards, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, Venice Film Festival, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Anna Karina (born Hanne Karin Blarke Bayer; 22 September 1940) is a Danish-French citizen, film actress, director, and screenwriter who has spent most of her working life in France. She is known as a muse of the director Jean-Luc Godard, one of the pioneers of the French New Wave. Her notable collaborations with Godard include The Little Soldier (1960), A Woman Is a Woman (1961), Vivre sa vie (1962), and Alphaville (1965). With A Woman Is a Woman, Karina won the Best Actress award at the Berlin Film Festival.
Karina's mother was a dress shop owner and her father was a ship's captain who left the family a year after she was born. She lived with her maternal grandparents for three years, until she was four. She spent the next four years in foster care when she returned to live with her mother. She has described her childhood as "terribly wanting to be loved", and as a child made numerous attempts to run away from home.
She began her career in Denmark, where she sang in cabarets and worked as a model playing in commercials. At age 14, she appeared in a Danish short film by Ib Schmedes, which won a prize at Cannes. She studied dance and painting in Denmark and for a while made a living selling her paintings. In 1958, after a row with her mother, she hitchhiked to Paris.
"I want to have a theater where people say, 'I feel like doing something, what's playing at Cinefamily?' As opposed to, 'Oh, I want to see Interstellar, where's it playing?" says the executive director of Cinefamily, Hadrian Belove. We caught up with the man behind Fairfax's nonprofit movie theater to see how they act upon their mission statement of revitalizing the film-going experience through community and discovery. Whether it's with their interactive screenings, specially-curated events, or guest starts like Doug Benson, Cinefamily has garnered a cult-like following of like-minded movie-goers who want nothing more than have a theater be just as social as a music concert. Here, Jerry Lewis answers a question from the audience regarding his notorious unreleased 1972 film, "The Day the Clown Cried." This represents a very rare public statement on his relationship with the film. We get quite excited about a great many things that happen on the Cinefamily stage — but we're pretty beside ourselves over this one. Jerry Lewis — not only one of the greatest comedians of the last century, but also one of cinema's most impeccable and creative craftsmen, was here LIVE at the Cinefamily on January 12, 2013 to discuss an incredible range of topics relating to his work both in front of and behind the camera. On April 29th, The Women of Cinefamily presented "An Evening with Anna Karina" along with a screening of the newly restored "A Woman is a Woman" at the Cinefamily Silent Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The Queen of the French New Wave discussed her early years, work with Jean-Luc Godard, later collaborations, and personal artistic pursuits with plenty of wonderful stories and jokes. The wonderful Anna Karina was hosted by the Founder of The Women of Cinefamily, Brie Larson, in this truly special night for a celebration of Anna's work throughout her career.
The Cinefamily is a non-profit cinematheque in Los Angeles--and we are raising money to restore our theatre, get equipment so we can live stream more events (and post more edited events and Q & As on YOUTUBE), and do another great year of programming. "Simply put, Cinefamily s one of our town's, and possibly the planet's, most important film collectives." - Alysia Grey Painter, NBC Los Angeles "Simply breathtaking in its scope and ambition" -- Peter Martin, Cinematical.com "Makes movie-going an event, with mega-rare film screenings, musical performances, crazed clip compilations & backyard barbeques." -- LAist.com "the sheer ambition is hard to overstate...a climate-altering event for Los Angeles moviegoers." -- LA WEEKLY "A die-hard movie fan's wet dream." -- PAPER MAG
