String Fountain

String Fountain by Paolo Salvagione

“String Fountain” is a kinect sculpture by Paolo Salvagione.

The challenge, how does one present 50’s synchronized swimming, or water works like the Bellagio fountain in Las Vegas, without water. Pushing string with a motor is not a new idea. Adding servo motors and a microcontroller to create automated and interactive installation is what I was looking to do during my residency at Autodesk’s new facility on Pier 9.

The Pier 9 Artists in Residence program gives artists, makers, and fabricators a chance to work with us in our digital fabrication workshops at Autodesk. Our artists explore, create, and document cutting-edge projects, and share them with the DIY community.

That’s why you can find an Instructable to build one element of the String Fountain here.

Emoji Portraits by Yung Jake

January 21st, 2015

A few weeks ago, this website emoji.ink popped up, where you can draw online with every emoji you can dream of. It was fun for a few minutes … I just can’t draw, neither with a mouse or trackpad.
Luckily Yung Jake can. Look at these Emoji Portraits! You can find even more of the in his twitter account.

Kraftwerk 3D Concert: Radio-Activity

January 8th, 2015

Yesterday I had the chance to see Kraftwerk, on of my all-time favorite bands, in Berlin. They’re currently performing their 3D shows “The catalogue: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8”, each representing one album, at the Neue Nationalgalerie, a modern art museum. As you might know, that building was designed by Mies van der Rohe and is a true classic. It’s fair to say that seeing Kraftwerk playing in the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, is a one time opportunity, especially as the building will be closed for renovations for the next five years.
Yesterday was concert #2: Radio-Activity (1975), not their best album in my humble opinion. The 3D visuals made the first 30 minutes fly by quickly, so that Kraftwerk could play their greatest hits for the next hour and a half: Autobahn, Spacelab, Das Model, Die Mensch-Maschine, Tour de France, Die Roboter, Boing Boom Tschak …
I don’t know if it was a concert or an art performance, it was for sure something I’ll remember for a long time. If Kraftwerk ever plays in your city, get tickets!

Disclaimer. I was invited by Volkswagen, a partner of the Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, who supports the concerts.

Knyttan

December 22nd, 2014

A few weeks ago, I discovered Knyttan, a knit-on-demand start-up in London. They offer sweaters, scarves and blanket scarves in a whole range of colors, made from Merino wool. But the cool thing about it, is that you can design them yourself starting from a many different patterns. Some of the them were designed by Nicolas Sassoon, studio Moniker and Studio Moross.
It’s no surprise that I had to design one myself, so here’s my scarf. I love it! When I ever make to London, I’ll definitely get a sweater too.

Knyttan

This was the design that I sent to the “factory”.

The scarf is really comfy, the label adds a nice touch to it.

Here you can see the design versus the knitted result. Somehow it got mirrored during production, I guess you wouldn’t want that when you’re designing a sweater.

Window

January 21st, 2014

Every few months, I google some of my favorite artists, just to check what they’ve been up to lately. One of them is Roman Signer. The best way to find his latest artworks, is to visit the website of the galleries which represent him. Apparently he has an exhibition at Galerie Barbara Weiss at the moment, just around the corner here in Berlin.
So here’s a new installation by Roman: Window. Playful as always.

Concentric Selections of Gradient

January 20th, 2014

I’ve been a fan of Jan Robert Leegte for years, his latest website: “Concentric Selections of Gradient“. It has a grey gradient and marching ants, what’s there not to like?

Summer

August 22nd, 2013

A few weeks ago, Olia Lialina wrote me an email. She wanted me to host .gif file, of course I said yes without asking any questions. I’m a big fan of her work and you might have seen her a .gif before, she’s the Animated GIF Model. 2 weeks ago I received the .gif file and an .html file and it became clear what she was up to. The .gif file was just one frame of an animated gif and several websites would host one and would link to each other. The result: Summer by Olia Lialina. (I’m honored to be part of this list.)
