The A/N GRA-39B radio remote control set. A piece of gear I cannot believe there is not much info on the web about. Especially from the HAM community where such gear is often modified for our purposes. Well, let me be the first to exploit this rugged battle axe of military Comm history for the Prepper/Survivalist, HAM, and emergency Communications community. Widely used since the early 60's up to the present, very basic low tech method to remote control your radio set and can also be used as a field phone.

Dad's Army is a British television sitcom and old time radio program about the Home Guard during the Second World War. It was written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft. The Home Guard consisted of local volunteers otherwise ineligible for military service, usually owing to age, and as such the series starred several veterans of British film, television and stage, including Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier, Arnold Ridley and John Laurie. Relative youngsters in the regular cast were Ian Lavender, Clive Dunn, Frank Williams, James Beck and Colin Bean.
Many TV episodes were remade for BBC Radio 4 with the original cast, although other actors played Walker after James Beck’s death. These radio versions were adapted by Harold Snoad and Michael Knowles and also starred John Snagge as a newsreader who would set the scene for each episode. Different actors were used for some of the minor parts; Mollie Sugden played the role of Mrs Fox and Pearl Hackney played the role of Mrs. Pike for example. The pilot episode was actually based on the revised version of events seen in the opening of the film version rather than the TV pilot.
Knowles and Snoad also developed a radio series “It Sticks Out Half a Mile”, which told what happened to some of the Dad’s Army characters after the war. It was originally intended to star Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier reprising their Dad’s Army roles, but Lowe died shortly after recording the pilot episode, and Bill Pertwee and Ian Lavender were brought in to replace him for a 13-episode series.
In 2004, Dad's Army was voted into fourth place in a BBC poll to find Britain's Best Television Sitcom. The series has had a profound influence on popular culture in the United Kingdom, with the series' catchphrases and characters well known. The SCR-694 replaced the SCR-284 and was later replaced by the AN/GRC-9. Designed to provide communication between moving or stationary vehicles or as a portable field radio set, the SCR-694 was originally intended for use by mountain troops and airborne forces but soon became the Army-wide standard at battalion level.

The SCR-694 "Radio set, Portable/Vehicular" consisted of the BC-1306 vacuum tube transmitter/receiver capable of AM and CW mode operation between 3.800 to 6.500 MHz.

Nomenclature
The term SCR was part of a nomenclature system developed for the U.S. Signal Corps, used at least as far back as World War I. Three-letter designators beginning with "SC" were used to denote complete systems, while one and two-letter designators (such as "BC", for basic component, "FT" for mounting, etc.) were used for components. Only a few system designators were used:
- SCM Set, Complete, Meteorological
- SCR Set, Complete, Radio
- SCS Set, Complete, System
SCR radio sets
The U.S. Signal Corps used the term "sets" to denote specific groupings of individual components such as transmitters, receivers, power supplies, handsets, cases, and antennas. SCR radio sets ranged from the relatively small SCR-536 "handie talkie" to high-powered, truck-mounted mobile communications systems like the SCR-299 and large microwave radar systems such as the SCR-584 radar.
SCS
The SCS designator was applied to groups of SCR-numbered sets comprising an extensive system, such as multiple radio sets employed in a ground-based fighter direction/control center. The SCR designator could be a single transmitting or receiving set, or a full set of both transmitting and receiving equipment.
Additional Designators
An additional designator, "RC" was used for subsystems or groups of accessories. The Joint Electronics Type Designation System which came into use in 1943 absorbed or superseded the SC designations...

AN/VRC-12 Vehicular Tactical Radio Sets
The radio sets AN/VRC-12 and VRC-43 through VRC-49, commonly referred to as the AN/VRC-12-series, were the vehicular tactical radio communications equipment used extensively by combat units from the Vietnam War (1965) through the early 1990s. These VHF FM single channel radio sets replaced the AN/GRC-3 through GRC-8 series. They were fully compatible with the AN/PRC-25 and AN/PRC-77, the basic infantry battalion manportable radio extensively used in the 1960s through 1980s. The AN/VRC-12 equipment provided 920 VHF/FM voice channels in the 30-76 MHz range.
From 1965 through about 1990, its period of service, U.S. Army and USMC units communicated with each other via these AN/VRC-12 tactical radios with few exceptions. The radio set was the Army and USMC tactical vehicular combat net radio, providing short range, two-way radio telephone communications. It was used primarily in utility vehicles, trucks, armored personnel carriers, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, self propelled Howitzers and the PATRIOT Missile System.
The AN/VRC-12 generation of radios was planned to be replaced in the mid-1980s by the SINCGARS family of VHF frequency-hopping radios with embedded cryptographic circuitry. However, a series of program setbacks repeatedly delayed this upgrade so that by 1990 only a few units had the SINCGARS while most continued to use the VRC-12s.
The AN/VRC-12 family consisted of various combinations of two basic components, a receiver-transmitter and an auxiliary receiver. It consists of three major units: Receiver-Transmitter RT-246A/VRC with a channel-presetting capability (10 pushbuttons), Manual Receiver-Transmitter RT-524A/VRC with built-in loudspeaker, and Auxiliary Receiver R-442A/VRC (wt. 18.5 lbs/8.4 kg). The radios also could be used with speech security or digital data equipment.
The two versions of receiver-transmitter were:
- RT246A/VRC: could operate on one of ten frequencies preset by the operator, controlled by pushbuttons. The RT-246 was designed for use in tracked vehicles where the operator could not reach the control panel. (61 lbs/27.7 kg)
- RT-524A/VRC: developed primarily for use in those vehicles where the operator could reach the control panel easily. The operator had to select each frequency manually on the RT-524, which had a built-in loudspeaker in the space occupied by push buttons on the RT-246. (wt. 58 lbs/26.3 kg)

Relative youngsters in the regular cast were Ian Lavender, Clive Dunn, Frank Williams, James Beck and Colin Bean. Many TV episodes were remade for BBC Radio 4 with the original cast, although other actors played Walker after James Beck’s death. These radio versions were adapted by Harold Snoad and Michael Knowles and also starred John Snagge as a newsreader who would set the scene for each episode. Different actors were used for some of the minor parts; Mollie Sugden played the role of Mrs Fox and Pearl Hackney played the role of Mrs. Pike for example. Dad's Army is a British television sitcom and old time radio program about the Home Guard during the Second World War. It was written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft. Designed to provide communication between moving or stationary vehicles or as a portable field radio set, the SCR-694 was originally intended for use by mountain troops and airborne forces but soon became the Army-wide standard at battalion level.

AN/VRC-12 Vehicular Tactical Radio Sets
The radio sets AN/VRC-12 and VRC-43 through VRC-49, commonly referred to as the AN/VRC-12-series, were the vehicular tactical radio communications equipment used extensively by combat units from the Vietnam War (1965) through the early 1990s. These VHF FM single channel radio sets replaced the AN/GRC-3 through GRC-8 series. They were fully compatible with the AN/PRC-25 and AN/PRC-77, the basic infantry battalion manportable radio extensively used in the 1960s through 1980s. The AN/VRC-12 equipment provided 920 VHF/FM voice channels in the 30-76 MHz range.
From 1965 through about 1990, its period of service, U.S. Army and USMC units communicated with each other via these AN/VRC-12 tactical radios with few exceptions. The radio set was the Army and USMC tactical vehicular combat net radio, providing short range, two-way radio telephone communications. It was used primarily in utility vehicles, trucks, armored personnel carriers, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, self propelled Howitzers and the PATRIOT Missile System.
The AN/VRC-12 generation of radios was planned to be replaced in the mid-1980s by the SINCGARS family of VHF frequency-hopping radios with embedded cryptographic circuitry. However, a series of program setbacks repeatedly delayed this upgrade so that by 1990 only a few units had the SINCGARS while most continued to use the VRC-12s.
The AN/VRC-12 family consisted of various combinations of two basic components, a receiver-transmitter and an auxiliary receiver. It consists of three major units: Receiver-Transmitter RT-246A/VRC with a channel-presetting capability (10 pushbuttons), Manual Receiver-Transmitter RT-524A/VRC with built-in loudspeaker, and Auxiliary Receiver R-442A/VRC (wt. 18.5 lbs/8.4 kg). The radios also could be used with speech security or digital data equipment.
The two versions of receiver-transmitter were:
- RT246A/VRC: could operate on one of ten frequencies preset by the operator, controlled by pushbuttons. The RT-246 was designed for use in tracked vehicles where the operator could not reach the control panel. (61 lbs/27.7 kg)
- RT-524A/VRC: developed primarily for use in those vehicles where the operator could reach the control panel easily. The operator had to select each frequency manually on the RT-524, which had a built-in loudspeaker in the space occupied by push buttons on the RT-246. (wt. 58 lbs/26.3 kg)

The radio sets AN/VRC-12 and VRC-43 through VRC-49, commonly referred to as the AN/VRC-12-series, were the vehicular tactical radio communications equipment used extensively by combat units from the Vietnam War (1965) through the early 1990s. These VHF FM single channel radio sets replaced the AN/GRC-3 through GRC-8 series. They were fully compatible with the AN/PRC-25 and AN/PRC-77, the basic infantry battalion manportable radio extensively used in the 1960s through 1980s. The AN/VRC-12 equipment provided 920 VHF/FM voice channels in the 30-76 MHz range.
From 1965 through about 1990, its period of service, U.S. Army and USMC units communicated with each other via these AN/VRC-12 tactical radios with few exceptions. The radio set was the Army and USMC tactical vehicular combat net radio, providing short range, two-way radio telephone communications. It was used primarily in utility vehicles, trucks, armored personnel carriers, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, self propelled Howitzers and the PATRIOT Missile System.
The AN/VRC-12 generation of radios was planned to be replaced in the mid-1980s by the SINCGARS family of VHF frequency-hopping radios with embedded cryptographic circuitry. However, a series of program setbacks repeatedly delayed this upgrade so that by 1990 only a few units had the SINCGARS while most continued to use the VRC-12s.
The AN/VRC-12 family consisted of various combinations of two basic components, a receiver-transmitter and an auxiliary receiver. It consists of three major units: Receiver-Transmitter RT-246A/VRC with a channel-presetting capability (10 pushbuttons), Manual Receiver-Transmitter RT-524A/VRC with built-in loudspeaker, and Auxiliary Receiver R-442A/VRC (wt. 18.5 lbs/8.4 kg). The radios also could be used with speech security or digital data equipment.
The two versions of receiver-transmitter were:
- RT246A/VRC: could operate on one of ten frequencies preset by the operator, controlled by pushbuttons. The RT-246 was designed for use in tracked vehicles where the operator could not reach the control panel. (61 lbs/27.7 kg)
- RT-524A/VRC: developed primarily for use in those vehicles where the operator could reach the control panel easily. The operator had to select each frequency manually on the RT-524, which had a built-in loudspeaker in the space occupied by push buttons on the RT-246. (wt. 58 lbs/26.3 kg)
Other components include the Frequency Selector Control C-2742/VRC (NSN-5895-00-892-3343) and the Intercommunication Set C-2299/VRC (NSN-5820-00-892-3340), control boxes for remote control of the radios when mounted beyond the reach of the operator...
