John Haley "Zoot" Sims (October 29, 1925 - March 23, 1985) was an American jazz saxophonist, playing mainly tenor and soprano. He first gained attention in the "Four Brothers" sax section of Woody Herman's big band, then went on to a long solo career often in partnership with fellow saxman Al Cohn or trombonist Bob Brookmeyer.
He was born in Inglewood, California, the son of vaudeville performers Kate Haley and John Sims. His father was a vaudeville hoofer, and Sims prided himself on remembering many of the steps his father taught him. Growing up in a performing family, Sims learned to play both drums and clarinet at an early age. His brother was trombonist Ray Sims.
Following in the footsteps of Lester Young, Sims developed into an innovative tenor saxophonist. Throughout his career, he played with big bands, starting with those of Kenny Baker and Bobby Sherwood after dropping out of high school after one year. He played with Benny Goodman's band in 1943 and replaced his idol Ben Webster in Sid Catlett's Quartet in 1944.

Loose Blues is an album by jazz pianist Bill Evans released on the Milestone label featuring performances by Evans with Zoot Sims, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, and Philly Joe Jones recorded in 1962.
Loose Blues was recorded for the Riverside label, but eventually dropped mostly because of Riverside forthcoming bankruptcy and the pressures of Verve producer Creed Taylor - he wanted Evans on his Verve label. So the project was shelved, and released posthumously only in 1982 as MCD-9200-2, after having been rediscovered in the Fantasy Records vaults. This was, in fact, believed to be a lost album since Keepnews couldn't find the master reels of the session dates, except for a take of "Loose Bloose". However, after a thorough research, he did succeed in finding the reels "stored in poorly marked tape boxes". The material was then assembled by Keepnews and Ed Michel. "Fudgesickle Built for Four" was named by Evans himself - who dug puns - and was a reference to "a bicycle built for two", a line from the popular song "Daisy Bell". Keepnews, recalling the sessions, stated that "My Bells", which is characterized by difficult tempo changes, took 25 takes to be recorded properly.
Joe Pass (born Joseph Anthony Jacobi Passalacqua, January 13, 1929 – May 23, 1994) was an American virtuoso jazz guitarist of Sicilian descent. He is generally considered to be one of the greatest jazz guitarists of the 20th century. His extensive use of walking basslines, melodic counterpoint during improvisation, use of a chord-melody style of playing and outstanding knowledge of chord inversions and progressions opened up new possibilities for the jazz guitar and had a profound influence on later guitarists.
Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Joe Pass, the son of Mariano Passalacqua, a Sicilian-born steel mill worker, was raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He received his first guitar, a Harmony model bought for $17, on his 9th birthday. Pass' father recognized early that his son had "a little something happening" and pushed him constantly to pick up tunes by ear, play pieces not written specifically for the instrument, practice scales and not to "leave any spaces" - that is, to fill in the sonic space between the notes of the melody.

Tenor sax giant Zoot Sims joined by pianist Roger Kellaway, bassist Chuck Berghofer and drummer Larry Bunker, is seen at the late lamented Donte's in Los Angeles, 1970. The quartet jams on a cooking 'Zoot's Piece' (based on 'Doxy'), a tender 'My Old Flame' and a medium-tempo 'On the Trail.' Castle blues - Sims Zoot/Red Mitchell 1984 This is from a filming session in a private residence in Sweden in 1984. Zoot Sims plays a freely improvised blues in Db on tenor saxophone with bassist Red Mitchell. Rune Gustafsson is on guitar. Following in the footsteps of Lester Young, Zoot Sims ( born 1925) developed into an innovative tenor saxophonist. Throughout his career, he played with renowned bands, including Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton, and Buddy Rich. Sims was also one of Woody Herman's "Four Brothers", and he was known among his peers as one of the strongest swingers in the field. He frequently led his own combos and sometimes toured with his friend Gerry Mulligan's sextet, and later with Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band. Sims had a long, successful partnership as co-lea...

Autum Leaves - Zoot Sims 1985 In 1985 somewhere in Sweden, Zoot played a session together with two top jazz musicians. In a comfortable living room he recorded with bassist Red Mitchell and guitarist Rune Gustafsson the old and famous standard called Autumn Leaves. Zoot died that year, unfortunately at only 59. This might have been his last recording. Red Mitchell was the musician who tuned his bass in fifths, just like the violin and and the cello and this shows in his creative and unique solo work . Rune Gustafsson, maybe it was done in his house, recorded already with Zoot in the late seventies. All together this was done in a relaxed atmosphere and that shows in what you hear.

Wake up in the morning, it's just another day
Hoping everythings gonna go my way
Found myself thinking about another life
So i jump out of bed and shake off all this strife
Tumble down the stairs and grab somethin' to go
I Got tunes in my head to keep me in the flow...ya know
Mumma smiles and says 'Princess don't be late'
I blow her a kiss, cause somethings just can't wait
I just wanna sing
And I just wanna Fly
And I just wanna reach for the sky
I just wanna dance
And I just wanna scream
And I just wanna reach for my Dreams..or so it seems
The wind is in my hair with the sand between my toes
I absolutely wonderful I'm hoping that it shows
I'm not gonna wait, things are going really great
And I don't care who knows
I just wanna sing
And I just wanna fly
And I just wanna reach for the sky
I just wanna dance
And I just wanna scream
And I just wanna reach for my Dreams
I just wanna find myself
The biggest star in the sky
Hold it in my heart
Hold it my hands
And never let it go
I wanna sing
I wanna fly
I wanna reach for the Sky
I just wanna dance
And I just wanna scream
And I just wanna reach for my Dreams
I just wanna sing
And I just wanna fly
And I just wanna reach for the Sky
I just wanna dance
And I just wanna scream
And I just wanna reach for my Dreams
