Paul Desmond (born Paul Emil Breitenfeld; November 25, 1924 – May 30, 1977) was an American jazz alto saxophonist and composer, best known for the work he did in the Dave Brubeck Quartet and for composing that group's greatest hit, "Take Five". He was one of the most popular musicians to come out of the West Coast's cool jazz scene.
In addition to his work with Brubeck, he led several of his own groups and did significant collaborations with artists such as Gerry Mulligan, Jim Hall and Chet Baker. After years of chain smoking and general poor health, Desmond succumbed to lung cancer in 1977 following one last tour with Brubeck.
Desmond was born Paul Emil Breitenfeld in San Francisco, California, in 1924, the son of Shirley (née King) and Emil Aron Breitenfeld. His father was from a Jewish family from Bohemia and Austria, and his mother was Catholic; throughout his life, Desmond was unsure of his father's background.
His father was a pianist, organist, and composer, who accompanied silent films in movie theaters and arranged for music companies. His mother was emotionally unstable throughout his upbringing. During childhood he spent years living with relatives in New York City due to problems at home. Desmond began playing violin at an early age, though his father forbade him to play it.

Eduardo de Góes "Edu" Lobo (born August 29, 1943) is a Brazilian singer, guitarist, and composer.
He achieved fame in the 1960s as part of the bossa nova movement.
His compositions include the world famous Upa Neguinho (with Gianfrancesco Guarnieri), Pra Dizer Adeus (with Torquato Neto) (also known in its English version as "To say goodbye"), Choro Bandido, A história de Lily Braun, Beatriz (the latter three songs with Chico Buarque), Arrastão and Canto triste (both with Vinicius de Moraes), and Ponteio (with Capinam). Ponteio won best song at the 3rd Festival de Música Popular Brasileira in the recording by Quarteto Novo in 1967.
He has worked with, and his songs have been covered by artists like Toots Thielemans, Marcos Valle, Elis Regina, Sylvia Telles, Sergio Mendes, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Maria Bethania, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, Monica Salmaso, Sarah Vaughan, Earth Wind & Fire, Caterina Valente and others.
Milton Nascimento (Portuguese pronunciation: [miwˈtõ nasiˈmẽtu]; born October 26, 1942, Rio de Janeiro,Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is a prominent Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist.
Nascimento's mother, Maria Nascimento, was a maid. As a baby, Milton Nascimento was adopted by a couple who were his mother's former employers; Josino Brito Campos, a bank employee, mathematics teacher and electronic technician and Lília Silva Campos, a music teacher and choir singer. When he was 18 months old, Nascimento's biological mother died, and he moved with his adopted parents to the city of Três Pontas, in the state of Minas Gerais.
Nascimento was an occasional DJ on a radio station that his father once ran. He lived in the boroughs of Laranjeiras and Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro.
In the early stages of his career, Nascimento played in two samba groups, Evolussamba and Sambacana. In 1963, he moved to Belo Horizonte, where his friendship with Lô Borges led to the Clube da Esquina ("corner club") movement. Members included Beto Guedes, Toninho Horta, Wagner Tiso, and Flávio Venturini, with whom he shared compositions and melodies. One composition was "Canção do Sal", which was first interpreted by Elis Regina in 1966 and led to a television appearance with Nascimento. The collective, as well as some others, released Clube da Esquina in 1972. Several hit singles were also released.

Genres: Crime, Drama,Paul Desmond - From The Hot Afternoon Original Release Date: 2000 Audio CD (April 4, 2000) Paul Desmond's first genuine all-Brazilian album under the Creed Taylor signature was a beauty, a collection of songs by the then-moderately known Edu Lobo and the emerging giant Milton Nascimento, then only in his early twenties. All Desmond has to do is sit back and ride the Brazilian grooves while lyrically ruminating on whatever pops into his head. It sounds so effortless -- until you try it yourself. The swirling, often gorgeous orchestral arrangements are by Don Sebesky (one CD edition mistakenly gives Claus Ogermann credit on the cover), Airto Moreira leads the samba-flavored percussion forces, and Lobo and his wife Wanda de Sah appear on three of Lobo's four songs. Lobo's "To Say Goodbye,...
With the Skylark "experiment" behind him, Paul Desmond reverted back to the relaxed quartet format that suited him well in the past. The reason? Through Jim Hall, he found a little-known, splendid guitarist in Toronto named Ed Bickert who became his new gigmate in 1974, and this album was meant to show his discovery off. In fact, it sparked a Desmond renaissance where he regained a good deal of the witty spark and erudite cool of his collaborations with Hall, no matter how unfashionable it was to play this way in 1974. Bickert is an even more reticent player than Hall, softer in touch and temperament, but eminently musical, enough to fire up Desmond's creativity. Old Desmond hand Connie Kay lends sympathy and comfort on drums, and Ron Carter is on bass. "Squeeze Me," "Everything I Love," a...

Paul Desmond - Edmonton Festival 76 Recorded live at Edmonton Jazz Festival, Canada Wednesday, April 14, 1976. Desmond appeared only half a dozen times with his "Canadian Quartet" -- Ed Bickert on guitar, Don Thompson on bass, and Jerry Fuller on drums. Fortunately Don Thompson also doubles as a recording engineer, and a number of the club dates were recorded and released. The group also appeared on CBC-TV s Take 30, and were recorded at the Edmonton Jazz Festival. Paul Desmond is widely recognized for his genius as a melodic improviser and as the benchmark of cool jazz sax players. His warm, elegant tone was one that he admittedly tried to make sound like a dry martini. He and Art Pepper were virtually the only alto players of their generation not directly influenced by Charlie Parker...

There have been four guitarists that changed and defined the jazz medium for many generations to come. Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, and Jim Hall. These musicians were some of the most important guitar architects that influenced how musicians played, thought, and conceived how the technique of instrument should be taken seriously. At 81 years young, Jim Hall continues to shine a light not only on his artistry, but continues to openly give his musical gift to music fans all over the world. Jim is celebrating this year by touring as well as releasing two new live recordings on the ArtistShare label. “Jim Hall Live at Bourbon Street volumes 3 & 4” was recorded at the famed Bourbon Street club in Toronto, Canada featuring a trio that consisted of Terry Clarke and Don Th...

Nashville Storm v Central Penn Piranha NAFL National Semi-Final October 31, 2009 OCTOBER 31- “THE MIRACLE IN MECHANICSBURG”- NASHVILLE STORM 37- CENTRAL PENN PIRANHA 31 (OT) MECHANICSBURG, Pennsylvania - Often in sports, huge games never live up to the hype. That wasn't the case in the NAFL Final 4 Game between the Nashville Storm (13-0) and Central Penn Piranha (13-1). The game play surpassed everyone's expectations, and produced one of the most memorable games in NAFL history. The Nashville Storm scored 22 points in a span of 5:19 to overcome a 31-9 fourth quarter deficit against the Central Penn Piranha, and force overtime. In the extra session, it only took the Storm 2:17 to score the game-winning touchdown, which was a 25-yard pass from Phellepe Hall to DeQuinn Watford. With the vi...

Going to the candidates' debate,
Laugh about it,
Shout about it,
When you've got to choose,
Every way you look at it, you lose.
Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?
A nation turns its lonely eyes to you (Woo woo woo).
What's that you say, Mrs. Robinson?
"Joltin' Joe has left and gone away" (Hey hey hey, hey hey hey).
