Chesney Henry "Chet" Baker, Jr. (December 23, 1929 – May 13, 1988) was an American jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist and vocalist.
Baker earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s, particularly for albums featuring his vocals (Chet Baker Sings, It Could Happen to You). Jazz historian David Gelly described the promise of Baker's early career as "James Dean, Sinatra, and Bix, rolled into one." His well-publicized drug habit also drove his notoriety and fame; Baker was in and out of jail frequently before enjoying a career resurgence in the late 1970s and '80s.
Baker was born and raised in a musical household in Yale, Oklahoma; his father, Chesney Baker, Sr., was a professional guitar player, and his mother, Vera (née Moser) was a talented pianist who worked in a perfume factory. His maternal grandmother, Randi Moser, was Norwegian. Baker began his musical career singing in a church choir. His father introduced him to brass instruments with a trombone, which was replaced with a trumpet when the trombone proved too large.
Chet is a masculine given name, often a nickname for Chester, which means fortress or camp. It is an uncommon name of English origin, and originated as a surname to identify people from the city of Chester, England. Chet was ranked 1027th in popularity for males of all ages in a sample of the 1990 US Census.
People named Chet include:
A baker is someone who makes, bakes and sells breads, rolls, biscuits or cookies, and/or crackers using an oven or other concentrated heat source. Cakes and similar foods may also be produced, as the traditional boundaries between what is produced by a baker as opposed to a pastry chef have blurred in recent decades. The place where a baker works is called a bakery.
The first group of people to bake bread were ancient Egyptians, around 8000 BC. During the Middle Ages, it was common for each landlord to have a bakery, which was actually a public oven; housewives would bring dough that they had prepared to the baker, who would tend the oven and bake them into bread. As time went on, bakers would also sell their own goods, and in that some bakers acted dishonestly, tricks emerged: for example, a baker might have trap door(s) in the oven or other obscured areas, that would allow a hidden small boy or other apprentice to take off some of the dough brought in for baking. Then the dishonest baker would sell bread made with the stolen dough as their own. This practice and others eventually lead to the famous regulation known as Assize of Bread and Ale, which prescribed harsh penalties for bakers that were found cheating their clients or customers. As a safeguard against cheating, under-filled orders, or any appearance of impropriety, bakers commonly began to throw in one more loaf of bread; this tradition now exists in the phrase "baker's dozen", which is 13.
Steve Houben is a Belgian jazz saxophonist and flutist. He was born in 1950. In the mid-1970s, he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Houben created on his return to Belgium the jazz seminar at the Liège conservatory, in association with Henri Pousseur. In his long career he played with a.o. Joe Newman, Bill Frisell, Toots Thielemans, Chet Baker, Mike Stern, George Coleman and Gerry Mulligan. He won the Belgian Golden Django in 2000 for best Belgian artist (first winner of the new category). He currently teaches jazz saxophone at the Brussels conservatory.
Astrud Gilberto (born March 29, 1940) is a Brazilian samba and bossa nova singer. She is best known for her performance of the song "The Girl from Ipanema".
Astrud Gilberto was born Astrud Evangelina Weinert, the daughter of a Brazilian mother and a German father, in the state of Bahia, Brazil. She was raised in Rio de Janeiro. She married João Gilberto in 1959 and emigrated to the United States in 1963, continuing to reside in the US from that time. Astrud and João divorced in the mid-1960s and she began a relationship with her musical partner, American jazz saxophone player Stan Getz.
She sang on two tracks on the influential 1963 album Getz/Gilberto featuring João Gilberto, Stan Getz, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, despite having never sung professionally before this recording. The 1964 single version of "The Girl from Ipanema", taken from the 1963 album, omitted the Portuguese lyrics sung by Joao Gilberto, and established Astrud Gilberto as a Bossa Nova singer. It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc. In 1964, Gilberto appeared in the films Get Yourself a College Girl and The Hanged Man. Her first solo album was The Astrud Gilberto Album (1965). Upon moving to the United States, she went on tour with Getz. Beginning as a singer of bossa nova and American jazz standards, Gilberto started to record her own compositions in the 1970s. She has recorded songs in Portuguese, English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, and Japanese.

Amazing Jazz song Almost Blue by Chet Baker / Composed by Costello Lyrics : Almost blue Almost doing things we used to do There's a girl here and she's almost you Almost all the things that your eyes once promised I see in hers too Now your eyes are red from crying Almost blue Flirting with this disaster became me It named me as the fool who only aimed to be Almost blue It's almost touching it will almost do There's a part of me that's always true...always Not all good things come to an end now it is only a chosen few I've seen such an unhappy couple ALMOST Me/You/Blue
The ever cool Chet Baker, gives a timeless rendition of this classic standard.
Valente: vocals, guitar, Baker: trumpet Brunswick-45N, rec. 1956 Baden-Baden This lovely day will lengthen into evening, we'll say goodbye to all we ever had. Alone where we have walked together, I'll remember April and be glad. I was content you loved me once in April. Your lips were warm and love and spring were new. But I'm not afraid of autumn and her sorrows, for I'll remember April and you. The fire'll dwindle into glowing ashes, for flames and love live such a little while. I won't forget and I won't be lonely, I'll remember April and I'll smile.
SIDE ONE (Track 01) - written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Ray Gilbert "The Astrud Gilberto Album" is the first album recorded by Astrud Gilberto, hot off the success from guesting on the landmark jazz album "Getz/Gilberto" (1964), a collaborative project between tenor saxophonist and her husband, the famous Brazilian guitarist/bossa nova pioneer João Gilberto. Although, Gilberto had never performed professionally, she was requested by her husband to sing in the English verses written for the album's tracks. One of these cuts was "The Girl from Ipanema", a song that would forever be immortalized by her voice, and a rendition that would be the definitive recording of that song. The single sold over one million copies and helped established her as a bossa nova darling and a pop culture supe...

One was to play foil to Gerry Mulligan's cool-headed, contrapuntal baritone saxophone, in the process lending some much-needed warmth to the celebrated pianoless quartet in which Baker first came to prominence in 1952. But the real Chet Baker, the far-from-abstract romantic and popular musician, emerged full-blown on this with-strings session in ...

Chet Baker and his Quintet with Bobby Jaspar Original LP Barclay 84042 - 1956. Deluxe LP Reissue by Sam Records - www.samrecords.fr This session was recorded at Studio Pathe-Magellan in Paris, between Tuesday October, 25th, 1955 and February, 10th, 1956. This record is the third and last record for the Barclay label. In answer to an offer from Nicole Barclay, Chet Baker arrived in Paris early in September 1955. On the 22nd -- or maybe the 23rd -- he signed a contract to make seven records... (The figure was later erased and replaced by «three», which turned out to be correct). Released after the trumpeter's return to the USA, this last volume was construed as rather a poor relation opposite the others in the trilogy, all the more so because, hurriedly drafted, the sleeve-notes did little...

Chris Albertson on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 Says: This interview with Bill was taped in 1972, when he brought his trio to my weekly TV show, The Jazz Set. Bill and I first met at Riverside Records in 1960. Back then, he looked more like an accountant than a jazz musician, but times change and we try to keep up by adopting trendy looks that eventually become laughable. Here, our long hair is a dead giveaway and my outfit is cringe-inducing. For some reason, I am not smoking during this interview, but most of the shows (we did 26, I think) show me puffing away on that Tareyton with the smoke all but obscuring the face of my guest. Giving it up about 35 years ago was one the wisest decisions I ever made.
Time after time
I tell myself that I'm so lucky
To be loving you
So lucky to be
The one you run to see
In the evening
When the day is through
I only know what I know
The passing years will show
You kept my love so young
So new
And time after time
You'll hear me say that I'm
So lucky to be loving you
I only know what I know
The passing years will show
You kept my love so young
So new
And time after time
You'll hear me say that i'm
So lucky to be loving you
