Clueless (film)

Clueless is a 1995 American coming-of-age comedy film. It is loosely based on Jane Austen's 1815 novel Emma. It stars Alicia Silverstone (in the lead role), Stacey Dash, Paul Rudd, and Brittany Murphy. The film is set in Beverly Hills and was written and directed by Amy Heckerling and produced by Scott Rudin. It was released in the United States on July 21, 1995.

The film grossed $56 million in the United States and has developed a cult following.

The film spun off a television sitcom and a series of books.

Plot

Cherilyn "Cher" Horowitz is a good-natured but superficial girl who is attractive, popular, and extremely wealthy. A few months shy of her sixteenth birthday, she has risen to the top of the high school social scene. She lives in a Beverly Hills mansion with her father Mel, a ferocious $500-an-hour litigator; her mother died from a freak accident during a routine liposuction procedure when Cher was a baby. Cher's best friend is Dionne Davenport, who is also rich, pretty, and hip, and understands what it's like to be envied. Though Dionne has a long-term relationship with popular student Murray, Cher claims that it is a pointless endeavor.

Alicia Silverstone

Alicia Silverstone (/æˈliːsiə ˈsɪlvəstoʊn/; born October 4, 1976) is an American actress, producer, author, and activist. Silverstone made her film debut in The Crush, earning the 1994 MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, and gained further prominence as a teen idol when she appeared in three music videos for the band Aerosmith. She starred in the 1995 sleeper hit Clueless (which earned her a multimillion-dollar deal with Columbia) and in the big-budget 1997 film Batman & Robin, in which she played Batgirl. She has continued to act in film and television and on stage. For her role in the short-lived drama comedy Miss Match, Silverstone received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy. A vegan, Silverstone endorsed PETA activities and published a book titled The Kind Diet.

Early life

Silverstone was born in San Francisco, California, the daughter of British parents Deirdre "Didi" (née Radford), a Scottish former Pan Am flight attendant, and Monty Silverstone, an English real estate agent. She grew up in Hillsborough, California. Her father was born to a Jewish family and her mother converted to Conservative Judaism before marriage. Silverstone began modeling when she was six years old, and was subsequently cast in television commercials, the first being for Domino's Pizza. She attended Crocker Middle School and then San Mateo High School.

Paul Rudd

Paul Stephen Rudd (born April 6, 1969) is an American actor, comedian, writer and producer. He has primarily appeared in comedies, and is known for his roles in the films Clueless (1995), Wet Hot American Summer (2001), Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), Knocked Up (2007), Role Models (2008), I Love You, Man (2009), Wanderlust (2012), This Is 40 (2012), and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013). In television, he appeared in the early 1990s on the NBC drama Sisters and some years later he appeared as Mike Hannigan on the NBC sitcom Friends. Other guest television roles have included an appearance on the Tim and Eric show, a recurring role on Parks and Recreation as politician Bobby Newport, and hosting Saturday Night Live. In 2015, Rudd starred as Scott Lang / Ant-Man in Marvel Studios' Ant-Man and will be reprising the character in Captain America: Civil War, set for release May 6, 2016. Rudd received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on July 1, 2015.
