The Fall

November 19th, 2009 · posted by imelda · marked as: Live reviews · Photos · Reviews

Camden’s Koko is heaving with middle-aged (and a few younger) diehard fans of Manchester’s enigmatic post-punk stalwarts The Fall. I am greeted with looks of sheer horror and bewilderment when I admit it’s the first time I’ve seen them live, and I’m subsequently treated to enticing hints and rumours of what might lie ahead.

Vic Ruggiero

November 12th, 2009 · posted by imelda · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

For the uninitiated, Vic Ruggiero is best known for being the charismatic frontman of New York ska band The Slackers. He’s also written for, recorded with or produced a plethora of side-projects and other acts including the Stubborn All-Stars, Rancid, Kepi Ghoulie and Pink. He continues to keep himself busy (does the man never rest?) [...]

Anti-Flag

October 26th, 2009 · posted by imelda · marked as: Live reviews · Photos · Reviews

Anti-Flag made it their mission to evoke the spirit of Joe Strummer during their latest visit to London. Playing a free gig consisting entirely of songs by The Clash, the band packed out the tiny Eastpak store on Carnaby Street in the West End.

The weight of expectation can hardly be greater on a new band founded by one of the most successful and controversial godfathers of US punk.
Jello Biafra has blazed a frenetic path through music and politics – founding member of the seminal Dead Kennedys, owner [...]

Camden’s legendary Electric Ballroom is busy having an identity crisis on this rainy summer evening. If you had to guess who was playing here tonight you’d have a tough job.

Madstock

Welcome to the house of fun! Fairground rides actually rival the number of beer tents and a weighty proportion of the crowd is sporting Madness-themed fancy dress – something tells me no one is taking anything too seriously today at this family-friendly festival.

Joey Cape interview

April 5th, 2009 · posted by imelda · marked as: Interviews

Joey Cape’s first UK show of his debut solo acoustic tour brought him to London’s Islington Academy on 29 March. Last Hours managed to pin down the Lagwagon frontman just before the show to find out how he feels about striking out on his own, his ever growing array of musical projects and the politics of punk.

Frank Turner Instore

March 29th, 2009 · posted by imelda · marked as: Live reviews · Photos

Frank Turner claims to be haunted by the scene from Spinal Tap where no-one turns up for an instore appearance. He really didn’t have anything to worry about today. Pure Grooves, the record shop/cafe tucked away behind London’s Smithfield market, is packed to capacity and a few ardent fans even have to settle for the pavement outside.

Billy Bragg

December 15th, 2008 · posted by imelda · marked as: Live reviews · Photos · Reviews

Billy Bragg sips tea from a cup that has ‘I Keep Faith’ written on it. Keeping faith, it seems, is the theme for the evening from this very English folk singer – who could also easily be described as a punk, a pop singer, an activist and a rock and roll star.

Rancid

November 25th, 2008 · posted by imelda · marked as: Live reviews · Photos · Reviews

It’s the last of three nights in a row that London’s Astoria has played host to the Californian punk legends. There’s an air of anticipation, celebration and a distinct feeling of no one wanting it to be over, as the crowd sing, dance and punch the air with almost constant fervour throughout the set.
