Recycling codes are used to identify the material from which an item is made, to facilitate easier recycling or other reprocessing. Having a recycling code, the chasing arrows logo or a resin code on an item is not an automatic indicator that a material is recyclable but rather an explanation of what the item is. Such symbols have been defined for batteries, biomatter/organic material, glass, metals, paper, and plastics. Various countries have adopted different codes. For example, the Table below shows the polymer resin codes (plastic) for a country. In the USA there are fewer as ABS is grouped in with other in group 7. Other countries have a more granular recycling code system. For example, China's polymer identification system has seven different classifications of plastic, five different symbols for post-consumer paths, and 140 identification codes The lack of codes in some countries has encouraged those who can fabricate their own plastic products, such as RepRap and other prosumer 3-D printer users, to adopt a voluntary recycling code based on the more comprehensive Chinese system.
Where did that come from?
Chances are, you’ve bought a plastic container at some point in your life—and since it had those three little arrows on the bottom, you figured you could recycle it. But those symbols mean a lot more than you think. They tell you what kind of plastic a product is made from, and even how recyclable it is. The truth is, recycling doesn’t start at the blue bin. It starts the moment you make a purchase. Watch this video to find out how to be smarter at recycling. It’s easier than you think. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Produced by Gabriel Reilich Written and Directed by Doug Patterson Graphics by Jake Infusino Music by Henry Ruppe
Anne Germain, director of waste and recycling technology for the National Waste & Recycling Association explains what the numbers on plastic mean. The numbers don't always mean the item is recyclable (although it usually is), but instead are resin identification codes for the type of plastic the object is made of. Here are the codes on plastics and what they mean. Anne will tell you what is made out of these plastics. 1: Polyethylene terephthalate (PET, PETE) 2: High-density polyethylene (HDPE) 3: Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) 4: Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) 5: Polypropylene (PP) 6: Polystyrene (PS) 7: Other (often polycarbonate or ABS)

Ever wondered what the numbers under plastic bottles and containers mean? We explore what the SPI (Society of the Plastics Industry) code 1 to 7 refer to. Drinking from plastic bottles can have a negative impact on your health as plastic can sometimes leach chemicals into foods or drinks (even if the plastic is BPA - Bisphenol A).
Easter Egg at the end of the video.

I hope everyone is excited to render the video files that we upload in the last episode. In today's lesson, we'll go over how to use a couple of components from AVFoundation, namely AVPlayer and AVPlayerLayer, to play some video. Along the way, I'll also show you guys how to provide some UI feedback that lets the user's know when the video is loading. In addition, we'll be looking at how to take advantage of the cell recycle process to reset the UI.
