Lena Mary Calhoun Horne (June 30, 1917 – May 9, 2010) was an American singer, dancer, actress, and civil rights activist.
Horne joined the chorus of the Cotton Club at the age of 16 and became a nightclub performer before moving to Hollywood, where she had small parts in numerous movies, and more substantial parts in the 1943 films Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather. Because of the Red Scare and her political activism, Horne found herself blacklisted and unable to get work in Hollywood. Her career spanned over 70 years appearing in film, television, and on broadway.
Returning to her roots as a nightclub performer, Horne took part in the March on Washington in August 1963, and continued to work as a performer, both in nightclubs and on television, while releasing well-received record albums. She announced her retirement in March 1980, but the next year starred in a one-woman show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, which ran for more than three hundred performances on Broadway. She then toured the country in the show, earning numerous awards and accolades. Horne continued recording and performing sporadically into the 1990s, disappearing from the public eye in 2000.

The Duke Is Tops is a 1938 American musical film released by Million Dollar Productions and directed by William Nolte. The film was later released in 1943 under the title The Bronze Venus, with Lena Horne given top billing. The Duke Is Tops features the film debut of singer Lena Horne, who was still 20 at the time and living as a housewife with her first husband in Pittsburgh, PA. She had yet to develop the smooth, classy style she would distinguish herself with in her later films for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Notably, Horne has a major acting role in this film, something that save for 1943's Cabin in the Sky and a few later films, she would rarely enjoy. The original top billed star Ralph Cooper was host of Amateur Night at the Apollo Theatre for 50 years. He also served as the movie's product...
Lena Horne in her first MGM film. She had previously appeared in two low budget (all black) films including a musical feature called The Duke is Tops (1938). After she made her Hollywood nightclub debut at Felix Young's Little Troc on the Sunset Strip she was signed with MGM becoming the first black performer to sign a long-term contract with a major Hollywood studio.

Using morgue photos, newsreel footage, and an amazing (if slightly over-arranged) recording by Lena Horne, Cuban filmmaker Santiago Alvarez fired off 'Now!', one of the most powerful bursts of propaganda rendered in the 1960s. Not intended as a work of great subtlety, Alvarez wields other people's images with perhaps more artistry than those who created them, and builds a remarkable piece of rhetorical cinema in the process. It's target -- the then-current racial conflagration in the United States -- is an easy one. But it is perhaps this very fact that most fuels the scorn and rage in the marrow of this film. If there was any room for nuance, he might have gone a little easier. 'Now!' is strident, yes; but breathtaking. Tom Sutpen
This is from a Pete Smith short from MGM in 1946. Don't know if this number was ever used in a movie or if it is unique to this.
This is a rare performance of Lena Horne from an MGM movie from the 1940's. The gorgeous, great Lena Horne gives a wonderful performance, but also notice the other black women in this part. They were too actresses aspiring to make it, but was reduced to bit parts and maid parts or dancing parts, because Hollywood wasn't ready to make black women glamour girls, of course Lena Horne was the only one Hollywood was willing to let be a star, but only in a limited way. Some of the other black actresses in this scene is the beautiful Suzette Harbin who is flirting with another woman's man, she appeared in many films, and was a fine actress. The other woman who jumped on Suzette was, Marie Bryant, a dance director in Hollywood, dancer, and singer, and good friend of Lena's, Vivian Dandridge, siste...
Cabin in the Sky is a 1940 American musical with music by Vernon Duke, lyrics by John La Touche, and a musical book by Lynn Root. "Two days after her two triumphant sold-out Carnegie Hall concerts, Lena Horne took the same show into New York City's Supper Club to be videotaped for a special on the Arts & Entertainment Network. Her quintet with Donald Harrison, Mike Renzi & Rodney Jones was augmented by the Count Basie Orchestra for four songs. Ms. Horne was in great spirits and brilliant form and this show turned out to be her last public performance. After one more studio album a year later, Lena Horne made good on her pledge to retire. Like everything else she did, she left in style with this stunning 72 minute performance." I DO NOT OWN COPYRIGHT
Lena Horne really delivers on a reprise of her classic "Stormy Weather" in a medley with her latter-day anthem "If You Believe" from the musical 'The Wiz'. Superb!

MANDOLIN RAIN
Bruce Hornsby & the Range
The song came and went
Like the times that we spent
Hiding out from the rain under the carnival tent
I laughed and she'd smile
It would last for awhile
You don't know what you got till you lose it all again
CHORUS:
Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Listen to my heart break every time she runs away
Listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go
A cool evening dance
Listening to the bluegrass band takes the chill
>From the air till they play the last song
I'll do my time
Keeping you off my mind but there's moments
That I find, I'm not feeling too strong
CHORUS
Running down by the lakeshore
She did love the sound of a summer storm
It played on the lake like a mandolin
Now it's washing her away once again
CHORUS
The boat's steaming in
I watch the sidewheel spin and I
Think about her when I hear that whistle blow
I can't change my mind
I knew all the time that she'd go
But that's a choice I made long ago
CHORUS
