Model, actress and fashion designer Twiggy is credited with being the world’s first supermodel. Born Lesley Hornby, her life changed for ever when, aged 16, a reporter spotted her photo on the wall of a Mayfair hairdresser and ran a story describing her as the ‘face of the 60s'.
Twiggy says:
“It was madness. I was suddenly in the newspapers and being flown all around the world, we were a very ordinary, happy family, and I had a happy childhood.
“I grew up in Neasden, which is a suburb of north-west London. We didn’t have lots of money but, you know, we had a car, we had a telly. I had my mum and dad; I had my sisters.
“He was brilliant, my dad. I was devoted to him. That doesn’t mean I didn’t love and adore mum, but she was much, much more complicated. She suffered with her nerves.
“My mum didn’t like talking about the past. I have a vague memory of her dad who died when I was, I think about four-ish. I know nothing about her mum. I don’t get the impression she was from a bad family or there was anything wrong with them. I think she was very close to her mum and dad.
“I feel, heart and soul, a Londoner, and I’m very proud of it. My dad came from Lancashire, so it's weird my mum married him - she hated going anywhere north of Watford.
“What am I going to find out? I’m off on an awfully big adventure and I’m very excited."
Twiggy grew up in a close-knit family in London - but admits that her parents told her nothing at all about her family. She discovers a history of strong women – and a hint of crime.
Twiggy’s episode marks the 100th episode of the Who Do You Think You Are? series.

If you think about Twiggy, then some of the first things you remember a top model of the 60s. It is in the 70s you think of Twiggy as a singer.
Here I Go Again, in my opinion, one of the best songs from 1976 but failed and was not a success, I do not understand even today.
In Denmark it was played in the most popular radio program with Christian Flagstad, Fanfare and Aftenposten. But it was not a hit in Denmark.
That must be one of the reasons why Germans always mentions Danes as;

Twiggy
Lesley Lawson (née Hornby; born 19 September 1949), widely known by the nickname Twiggy, is an English model, actress and singer. In the mid-1960s, she became a prominent British teenage model of swinging sixties London with others such as Penelope Tree.
Twiggy was initially known for her thin build (thus her nickname) and her androgynous look consisting of large eyes, long eyelashes, and short hair. In 1966, she was named "The Face of 1966" by the Daily Express and voted British Woman of the Year. By 1967, Twiggy had modelled in France, Japan, and the U.S., and landed on the covers of Vogue and The Tatler. Her fame had spread worldwide.
After modelling, Twiggy went on to enjoy a successful career as a screen, stage and television actress. As an actress, Twiggy's role in The Boy Friend (1971) brought her two Golden Globe Awards. She has hosted her own series, Twiggy's People, in which she interviewed celebrities, and also appeared as a judge on the reality show America's Next Top Model. Her 1998 autobiography, Twiggy in Black and White, entered the bestseller lists. Since 2005, she has modelled for Marks and Spencer, most recently to promote their recent rebranding, appearing in television advertisements and print media, alongside Myleene Klass, Erin O'Connor, Lily Cole and others. In 2012, she worked alongside Marks & Spencer's designers to launch an exclusive clothing collection for the M&S Woman range.

If you think about Twiggy, then some of the first things you remember a top model of the 60s. It is in the 70s you think of Twiggy as a singer. Here I Go Again, in my opinion, one of the best songs from 1976 but failed and was not a success, I do not understand even today. In Denmark it was played in the most popular radio program with Christian Flagstad, Fanfare and Aftenposten. But it was not a hit in Denmark. “He was brilliant, my dad. I was devoted to him. That doesn’t mean I didn’t love and adore mum, but she was much, much more complicated. She suffered with her nerves.
“My mum didn’t like talking about the past. I have a vague memory of her dad who died when I was, I think about four-ish. I know nothing about her mum. I don’t get the impression she was from a bad family or there was anything wrong with them. I think she was very close to her mum and dad.
“I feel, heart and soul, a Londoner, and I’m very proud of it. My dad came from Lancashire, so it's weird my mum married him - she hated going anywhere north of Watford.
“What am I going to find out? I’m off on an awfully big adventure and I’m very excited."
Twiggy grew up in a close-knit family in London - but admits that her parents told her nothing at all about her family. She discovers a history of strong women – and a hint of crime.

Twiggy - Heaven in My Eyes
I discovered Twiggy as a singer in "The Boyfriend" and she followed that with two country-pop albums. I love her voice. "Heaven In Your Eyes" sat on the shelf since 1979 and Twiggy never claimed that it was a disco album. It is a pop-rock album and it succeeds extremely well in that genre. Twiggy really belts it out on "You've Been Lying" and it is a song that really works. "Dorothy" is a beautiful song about the main character in "The Wizard of Oz". Twiggy sings this marvellously and it is a heartfelt rendering. "Carries On" is a sublime country flavoured song and Twiggy loves country music. It is a stand-out number on this album. “He was brilliant, my dad. I was devoted to him. That doesn’t mean I didn’t love and adore mum, but she was much, much more complicated. She suffered with her nerves.
“My mum didn’t like talking about the past. I have a vague memory of her dad who died when I was, I think about four-ish. I know nothing about her mum. I don’t get the impression she was from a bad family or there was anything wrong with them. I think she was very close to her mum and dad.
“I feel, heart and soul, a Londoner, and I’m very proud of it. My dad came from Lancashire, so it's weird my mum married him - she hated going anywhere north of Watford.
“What am I going to find out? I’m off on an awfully big adventure and I’m very excited."
Twiggy grew up in a close-knit family in London - but admits that her parents told her nothing at all about her family. She discovers a history of strong women – and a hint of crime.

"Vanilla Olay" is an obscure Jackie De Shannon song, while "Just Bidin' My Time" is a cover of a song taken from an early Anne Murray album. "Vaudeville Man", a song written by Wendy Waldeman, appeared on Maria Muldaur's eponymous debut album (the one featuring Midnight at the oasis). "You've Got Me To Hold On To" was a huge country hit for Tanya Tucker - I first cam across it on an Anne Murray album, although Tanya and Twiggy both recorded it before Anne.
This is an interesting collection of easy listening pop music that causes me to wonder what might have been possible if Twiggy had really been taken seriously as a singer.
This "Best Of" collection from Spectrum was released in 1999, and milks together tracks from Twiggy's first and last studio album that she released on the Mercury Records label. The two records were "Twiggy" (1976), which appears in it's entirety, and "Please Get My Name Right" (1977), where four tracks are omitted from this compilation, and both of these were top 40 hits in the UK chart upon their releases.
Although Twiggy will almost certainly be forever first and foremost be associated as a model, and a very successful one at that, she also processes a pleasant and interesting singing voice. She sings with a great sincerity, and I was immediately won over by this. Most of the easy-listening songs on this album are well worth listening too. The style of this music was very contemporary for the time, and an appealing mixture of soothing country and western ballads, and upbeat catchy pop ditties.
Twiggy's top 20 hit "Here I Go Again", a cover of a song by Country Joe and the Fish, is hauntingly beautiful, and the story-telling "Everything Comes In Time" is another of the CD's highlights. As well as the originals, there are plenty of other cover versions to be found, most of which are really quite obscure though. The most famous is probably the Motown favourite "I'll Be Doggone", and Jackie DeShannon's "Vanilla Olay", which was later recorded by Marianne Faithfull. Surprisingly, the beautiful title track of her second LP "Please Get My Name Right" isn't included on this set, and neither is the touching "Fish in the Sea", which, as it's doubtful that the entire album will receive a re-issue anytime soon, is a shame.
Despite those unfortunate omissions, "The Best of Twiggy" is a good addition to any easy listening music collection, and will serve as a revelation to those many people who aren't aware of the talent this lady possesses. It's just a shame really that the general public still won't know that these recordings, produced by Tony Eyers, even exist.

I discovered Twiggy as a singer in "The Boyfriend" and she followed that with two country-pop albums. I love her voice. "Heaven In Your Eyes" sat on the shelf since 1979 and Twiggy never claimed that it was a disco album. It is a pop-rock album and it succeeds extremely well in that genre. Twiggy really belts it out on "You've Been Lying" and it is a song that really works. "Dorothy" is a beautiful song about the main character in "The Wizard of Oz". Twiggy sings this marvellously and it is a heartfelt rendering. "Carries On" is a sublime country flavoured song and Twiggy loves country music. It is a stand-out number on this album. "Angels Never Sleep At Night" has a dance feel to it but it is still more of a rock song. "Sugar Daddy" and "Lover Boy" also have that 1979 dance feel that was so prevalent in a lot of songs in the disco era. Twiggy sings them extremely well but "Heaven In My Eyes" is a hot song and Twiggy provides a superb vocal. Twiggy is a fine singer and actress. Just because Donna Summer was a co-producer, it doesn't mean that Twiggy is singing in the same style of music that of Donna Summer was doing at the time. I also highly recommend "Midnight Blue" very highly for the music Twiggy recorded in the 80s. "Heaven In My Eyes" is a fine album by a very superb singer. Recorded in 1967, "Britain's First Top Model" is a reissue of 1972's "Twiggy & The Girlfriends", the first of three full-length albums. Falling somewhere in between Margo Guryan, Mary Hopkin, Marianne Faithfull, and a heavily orchestrated Nico, it's a slight record (Twiggy's voice is adequate, yet lacks the confidence of her musical peers) that nevertheless dutifully oozes enough of the late-'60s nostalgia to warrant the occasional rainy day spin, preferably in the company of a full ashtray, a bottle of brandy, and an amorous friend.

On "Midnight Blue" she has applied her remarkable interpretive abilities to contemporary music, and the results are, to say the least, stunning!
From standout versions of '60s pop anthems ("Be My Baby," "Needles And Pins" and "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," for instance) to terrific interpretations of rock music of a more recent vintage ("Diamond," "Johnny and Mary" or "The First Cut Is The Deepest"), the tracks have an extraordinary freshness and sparkle. "Arabian Nights" is highly hypnotic, and virtually all of the songs demand repeated listenings.
Carly Simon contributes background vocals on the opening track, and additional support comes from highly professional producers, imaginative arrangers and strong musicians.
In short, this compilation is yet another triumph for Twiggy.
And by the time you reach the CD finale -- an unusual and most effective near-acappella version of "The End Of The World" -- you'll feel that you scored a real coup in discovering this album.
"Midnight Blue" is an excellent compilation of her 80s recordings which are featured on CD for the first time. Twiggy's vocal abilities show an increased power and range since her earlier recordings in the 70s.
Recorded between 1982 and 1990, all of these tracks are making their debut on CD; indeed, I don't think any of them have been released previously at all. Twiggy co-operated fully in this release, selecting the tracks and writing and the liner notes. Some of the tracks were intended for release on an album of sixties covers provisionally titled "Then he kissed me", but Twiggy didn't include the title track among the selections here. I wonder if there is enough material for a second volume; I`d like to hear Twiggy`s version of that song. Another song that isn't here is "Mistletoe and Wine", which Twiggy performed on TV but I don't think she actually recorded it. Following her TV performance, the songwriters offered the song to Cliff Richard and the rest is history. Even without those two songs, there is plenty of great music here.
When covering other people's songs, Twiggy manages to give them a distinctive touch while still keeping them recognizable to those familiar with the originals. This is especially the case on the sixties classics including "Baby I Love You", "The First Cut Is The Deepest", "Ruby Tuesday", "Sweet Talkin Guy", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", "Be My Baby", "Needles And Pins" and "Save The Last Dance For Me" (here recorded as a duet with Leo Sayer). I noticed that most of these songs are from the early sixties and I wonder if Twiggy prefers this period, or if these songs simply suit Twiggy's voice and style better than songs from later in the sixties. In her notes, Twiggy says that she and her producer spent plenty of time listening to sixties music and considering which songs to record.
Twiggy says she has always been passionate about country and pop music, though country music is only represented by two songs here. Twiggy sings "End Of The World" with very sparse musical backing. Model, actress and fashion designer Twiggy is credited with being the world’s first supermodel. Born Lesley Hornby, her life changed for ever when, aged 16, a reporter spotted her photo on the wall of a Mayfair hairdresser and ran a story describing her as the ‘face of the 60s'.
Twiggy says:
“It was madness. I was suddenly in the newspapers and being flown all around the world, we were a very ordinary, happy family, and I had a happy childhood.
“I grew up in Neasden, which is a suburb of north-west London. We didn’t have lots of money but, you know, we had a car, we had a telly. I had my mum and dad; I had my sisters.
“He was brilliant, my dad. I was devoted to him. That doesn’t mean I didn’t love and adore mum, but she was much, much more complicated. She suffered with her nerves.
“My mum didn’t like talking about the past. I have a vague memory of her dad who died when I was, I think about four-ish. I know nothing about her mum. I don’t get the impression she was from a bad family or there was anything wrong with them. I think she was very close to her mum and dad.
“I feel, heart and soul, a Londoner, and I’m very proud of it. My dad came from Lancashire, so it's weird my mum married him - she hated going anywhere north of Watford.
“What am I going to find out? I’m off on an awfully big adventure and I’m very excited."
Twiggy grew up in a close-knit family in London - but admits that her parents told her nothing at all about her family. She discovers a history of strong women – and a hint of crime.
Twiggy’s episode marks the 100th episode of the Who Do You Think You Are? series.
