An orchestra (/ˈɔːrkᵻstrə/ or US /ˈɔːrˌkɛstrə/; Italian: [orˈkɛstra]) is a large instrumental ensemble used in classical music that contains sections of string (violin, viola, cello and double bass), brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. Other instruments such as the piano and celesta may sometimes be grouped into a fifth section such as a keyboard section or may stand alone, as may the concert harp and, for 20th and 21st century compositions, electric and electronic instruments. The term orchestra derives from the Greek ὀρχήστρα, the name for the area in front of an ancient Greek stage reserved for the Greek chorus. The orchestra grew by accretion throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, but changed very little in composition during the course of the 20th century.
The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is an orchestra based in Melbourne, Australia. It has 100 permanent musicians. Melbourne has the longest continuous history of orchestral music of any Australian city and the MSO is the oldest professional orchestra in Australia. The MSO performs to more than 200,000 people in Melbourne and regional Victoria in over 150 concerts a year.
Following integration with the Melbourne Chorale in 2008, the Orchestra has responsibility for its own choir, the MSO Chorus.
The orchestra relies on funding by the Victorian State Government through Arts Victoria, Department of Premier and Cabinet and the Federal government through the Australia Council and support from private corporations and donors. It is supported by Symphony Services International.
The MSO's first concert took place on 11 December 1906 under the baton of Alberto Zelman, founder of the MSO, who later became the first Australian conductor to conduct the London and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras. In 1934, the MSO became one of the Australian Broadcasting Commission's radio orchestras. In 1949, the orchestra took on the new name of the Victorian Symphony Orchestra. In 1965, the orchestra's name reverted to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

They have reworked Bag Raiders, Toecutter and Sneaky Sound System. Their first original song, "Crave You" featuring Giselle Rosselli, received considerable airtime in Australia on the alternative music radio station Triple J in 2010. It was co-written by Gruzman, Lyell and Rosselli after the duo contacted the musician/producer to provide an original track for a compilation album by their label Bang Gang. In July 2010 Flight Facilities commenced their first tour, Maiden Voyage. They played at various Australian nightclubs: Elsewhere in the Gold Coast, Empire in Brisbane, Limbo in Adelaide, and Adult Disco in Sydney before going to Japan to play at Onzieme in Osaka, and Le Baron in Tokyo. "Crave You" was listed at No. 19 in the Triple J Hottest 100, 2010 and was featured as the soundtrack to Myer's 2010 Spring Racing Carnival television commercial campaign.
Melbourne (/ˈmɛlbərn/, AU i/ˈmɛlbən/) is the capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia and Oceania. The name "Melbourne" refers to the area of urban agglomeration (as well as a census statistical division) spanning 9,900 km2 (3,800 sq mi) which comprises the broader metropolitan area, as well as being the common name for its city centre. The metropolis is located on the large natural bay of Port Phillip and expands into the hinterlands towards the Dandenong and Macedon mountain ranges, Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley. Melbourne consists of 31 municipalities. It has a population of 4,347,955 as of 2013, and its inhabitants are called Melburnians.
Founded by free settlers from the British Crown colony of Van Diemen's Land on 30 August 1835, in what was then the colony of New South Wales, it was incorporated as a Crown settlement in 1837. It was named "Melbourne" by the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Richard Bourke, in honour of the British Prime Minister of the day, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne. It was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847, after which it became the capital of the newly founded colony of Victoria in 1851. During the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, it was transformed into one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities. After the federation of Australia in 1901, it served as the nation's interim seat of government until 1927.

Together they explore the musical extremes of passion, despair, love and death. This project required the creation of a 15 second commercial, with a conceptual idea, to advertise a well known company. The advert had to be type based, but could include supporting imagery. Sound had to be incorporated as well. I chose to do Metro Trains, the Melbourne train provider, with the concept of choosing a train over a car. I kept my colour scheme to only colours used by Metro, to help tie it to the brand. The font used is also similar to that used by Metro in their current adverts. The music was sourced from MusOpen, a site providing royalty and copyright free classical music. The chosen piece was Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67 - Mov. 1 - Allegro con brio" by Skidmore College Orchestra. This advert was created for a University Class, Type for Screen and Mot...
The Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43, (Russian: Рапсодия на тему Паганини, Rapsodiya na temu Paganini) is a concertante work written by Sergei Rachmaninoff. It is written for solo piano and symphony orchestra, closely resembling a piano concerto. The work was written at Villa Senar, according to the score, from July 3 to August 18, 1934. Rachmaninoff himself, a noted interpreter of his own works, played the solo piano part at the piece's premiere at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore, Maryland, on November 7, 1934 with the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Leopold Stokowski. Rachmaninoff, Stokowski, and the Philadelphia Orchestra made the first recording, on December 24, 1934, at RCA Victor's Trinity Church Studio in Camden, New Jersey. +++ In my anguish I cried to the Lord, a...

The Video & Text - Peter Morse The Numbers Song outlines the protagonist's relationship with the world of mathematics. The text is deliberately hyperbolic and performed in a melodramatic manner, in a kind of darkly humorous allusion to the roles of Vincent Price. There are various references to the Metaphysical poets and the doctrines of Neoplatonism, ironised as a kind of jazz ballad. The later French text is a mnemonic for the number Pi (if you count the letters in the words they equate with the sequence 3.1415926...) Computer animations are employed to display various types of platonic objects undergoing morphing and deformations applied in the abstract mathematical space of the computer. Wild, spirited and consumed by wanderlust—the Camilla girl is a chameleon, characterised by strength, beauty and a little bit of crazy. Camilla’s Autumn/Winter 2014 Collection, “And God Created Woman” was brought to life for the Grand Showcase at Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF). Marking the label’s 10-year anniversary, the collection reflects the brand’s signature style, but heralded a shift towards a bolder, tougher and more complex Camilla. Exuding a fierce warrior attitude, the garments married the hard with the soft, experimenting with contrasting textures, fitted silhouettes, and unconventional prints. Accompanied by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO), the runway was transformed into a tribal battleground, and was a magnificent glimpse into Camilla’s wondrous w...
