In this week's red carpet roundup, Zendaya pulls off a cape, Bella Hadid makes an epic fashion fail and Karen Gillan loses a battle against crushed velvet. By Nyree McFarlane and Emma Day.

Zendaya Coleman is channelling both Barbie and a Bond Villain in this drama of a Ralph & Russo dress, and we love it. The backcombed hair and matching pink shoes make it very ‘70s soap star at the Daytime Emmys, but Zendaya has the presence to pull it off (we’re not sure we’d like this look on many other people, but she’s making it work, as is her way). And besides, it’s fun, and isn’t that what we should all be having more of these days? Photo: Getty
Dues should also be paid to Zendaya and Ralph & Russo for this insanely gorge caped number. The bejewelling and heavy satin makes this feel like something Marilyn Monroe could have worn to the Oscars in the ‘50s, but the string-thin spaghetti straps and squared-off neckline keep things very fresh. And that navy silk lined cape? Duh-vine. It makes the Spiderman star look like a magician whose main trick is being fabulous at all times. Ta da! Photo: Getty
Can we all agree that Kiki is KILLING it in this Dior? Particularly when the sunnies and fan are added into the mix. The spangly stars and polka-dot bib add a generous dose of whimsy, while the gossamer-thin tulle veers it towards the coquettish rather than the childlike. The shoulder pads make it look slightly like there are two starfish perched upon her frame, like some kind of Cruella de Vil of the sea, but we’re digging it. We’ve long been fans of Alicia Vikander’s Scandi-cool, slightly offbeat style - and these two looks, worn just a day apart, pretty much sum up why. She can do flouncy, romantic ruffles with delicate polka dots and look like she’s stepped off an Ibiza beach ready for cocktail hour. And then, 24 hours later, she can do super-sophisticated and structured in a navy gown that’s both Fifties-inspired and minimalistically modern all at once. These designs are by Prabal Gurung and Marchesa Notte respectively, and we don’t know whether to be jealous or just in love. Daphne Guinness looks like a creepy villain/being in an M Night Shyamalan film that is in the process of shapeshifting into a wall of chic bathroom tiles in order to disguise itself from the protagonist. Also: the plastic flares covering her shoes? Is she about to part time as a plumber? Let’s band together as consumers and use our purchase power (or lack thereof) to make sure plastic sheathing over one’s shoes doesn’t become an actual bonafide trend. Photo: Getty
This tulle sack of a Dior dress? Meh, we can get past it… but when paired with a useless tiny bag (shudder), unflattering mini sunglasses, a mesh hand condom and visible underwear elastics emblazoned with the designer’s name, this becomes a firm no. The fact that folk pay top dollar for stuff like this is one of the reasons we’re over the high-fashion industry and the people that peddle it. You’re stuck in a small vacuum and a positive feedback loop people. A) Dior, you’re stealing Calvin Klein’s schtick with the black and white branded undie elastics. B) Bella Hadid, even 90s rappers couldn’t make those tiny useless sunglasses look cool. You look like Ross from Friends in his daggiest of years… cease and desist. Photo: Getty
When we think British aristocrat, we don’t necessarily picture quite this much underboob. But hey, Lady Mary Charteris clearly marches to the beat of her own drum, and kudos for that. However the kind of roomy, high-cut pants that one’s forced to wear after childbirth paired with a chestal keyboard and a netted body stocking that makes your skin look like it’s started to decay does not a garden party outfit make. (However that much itchy lace would make for a serious case of rashy gazongas - and we’re getting sympathy chest pains for her). Photo: Getty
Karen Gillan might have kicked ass in Guardians of the Galaxy, but she’s definitely losing a battle against crushed velvet here. Done sparingly, we’re all about the festive fabric, but head-to-toe in a wrap coatdress? It’s like Juicy Couture’s started to venture into the dressing gown market. (Except this is actually by It-girl fave Self-Portrait, who have not done right by this flame-haired goddess). Photo: Getty
Gwendoline Christie is a badass, 6 foot 2 goddess, and she always looks great in slightly edgier designs (and in armour). But in this frumpy Miu Miu she looks like Tilda Swinton dressed up as Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall for a skit on Saturday Night Live (which we’d love to see by the way).
