It offers a hop on, hop off water bus, stopping at over 20 museums, monuments, theatres and exhibitions. The Vaporetto leaves from the Santa Lucia railway station stop E every 30 minutes and ends at San Giorgio Maggiore Island (until 28 August) and Giardini (from 29 August until 25 November. Multimedia commentary is available on board and many of the museums offer discounted admission charges and priority access to Vaporetto dell'arte card holders. It is also the site of the world's first botanical garden, created in 1545 and preserving its original layout, a circular central plot, symbolizing the world, surrounded by a ring of water. Tours run regularly from Piazzo San Marco and offer a varied choice of cultural or relaxing trips to one of the island's many museums or spas. Or for the independent traveller, a train from Venice's Santa Lucia station will take 30-40 minutes. Venice Lido The Lido is a short vaporetto ride from central Venice and provides a great escape for a day or afternoon from the tourist crowds. The beaches, while not extraordinary, are wide and sandy and a decent place to relax and swim in summer. In early September, the Lido hosts the Venice Film Festival, the first international film festival ever which opened in 1932 at the Excelsior Hotel. The Hotels des Bains nearby was the setting for Thomas Mann's famous novel Death in Venice. Across the road from the vaporetto stop is Santa Maria Elisabetta, a wide avenue lined with ice cream shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars, all adding to the chilled out beach atmosphere.
