A seemingly perfect backdrop for a strip club, the island should sound ideal to any girl coming from Portland, Atlanta, or Anchorage to work as an exotic dancer. But is it? Exotic foregrounds the stories of workers, as they discuss this fluid and secretive world…

May Sex Worker Support Group-Saturday, May 6

swsg-2-03-1-1024x1024Join us for our monthly sex worker support group in conjunction with lifeworks psychotherapy center. Whether you are a (current or former) sex worker in need of support or a sex worker willing to offer support to others, please join us!

Saturday, May 6 from 4:00-5:30PM

Topic: Economics & Personal Life.

April’s meeting about relationships brought up the intersections between economic and personal life, and how both the ebb and flow of income and the secrecy and concern around financial disclosure affect stress and connections with others. This month, we’ll follow that thread further to explore the unique impacts sex work can have on financial well being, stress and management.

In our May meeting, we invite you to gather around and share your experiences, struggles, skills and resources related to financial life and economic identity.

Note: The monthly topic is a starting place for conversation and connection. Our intention is to follow the needs and interests of those in attendance. If you would like support or feedback on another topic or issue, please feel free to speak to a facilitator at the outset of the group or to share in the group.

This group meets at SWOP Chicago (Coalition Impact), 405 W Superior St, 7th Floor, Chicago, IL 60654.

This support group is for individuals who identify currently or previously as sex workers. If you are in the sex trade, you may experience stigma, shame, guilt or isolation. You may find it is a struggle to develop, manage and sustain positive and supportive personal relationships. You may have interpersonal conflicts within the industry, or difficulty with depression and/or anxiety. Support groups are a way to build community, share experiences and gain emotional support from others.

This group is co-sponsored by SWOP Chicago (Sex Worker Outreach Project) and LifeWorks Psychotherapy Center, and is open to anyone who has previously or is currently working in the sex trade. (For the safety and protection of participants, this group is not open to consumers of sex industry services.) The group is facilitated by Brandon Haydon, LCSW, Cassandra Damm, LCSW and SerpentLibertine, LCSW.

Monthly Sex Worker Support Group-Tuesday, March 7 at Lifeworks Psychotherapy

swsg-2-03-1-1024x1024
Sex Worker Support Group

Tuesday, March 7
6-7:30 pm

Location: Lifeworks Psychotherapy Center in Skokie, at 8707 Skokie Blvd., Suite 310.

This group meets at  Just east of the Edens Expressway and the Dempster Station on the CTA Yellow Line. Free parking in lot.

We are excited to launch this new support group for individuals who identify as sex workers.  People in the sex trade often experience stigma, shame, guilt, isolation, and struggle to manage personal relationships. They may have conflicts within the industry, and difficulty with depression and/or anxiety. Support groups are a way to build community, share experiences and gain emotional support form others.

This Month’s Topic: Isolation

Almost all participants who have attended this support group over the past few months have spoken about feeling isolated.  Both feeling alone on the job and alone socially –unable to share freely with family, friends, others.  Being a sex worker can be isolating, lonely and limiting.  Isolation can increase depression, hopelessness and substance abuse to name a few side effects.  An intention of this support group is to create an opportunity to combat that experience of isolation.  Join us to share your experiences and start the process of reducing isolation.

This group is co-sponsored by SWOP Chicago (Sex Worker Outreach Project) and is open to anyone who has previously or is currently working in the sex trade. (For the safety and protection of participants, this group is not open to consumers of sex industry services.)  The group will be facilitated by Rami Henrich, LCSW and Cindy Trawinski, Psy.D. along with members of SWOP-Chicago.
