Edgar Degas (US /deɪˈɡɑː/ or UK /ˈdeɪɡɑː/; born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas, French: [ilɛːʁ ʒɛʁmɛ̃ ɛdɡaʁ də ɡɑ]; 19 July 1834 – 27 September 1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, although he rejected the term, preferring to be called a realist. He was a superb draftsman, and particularly masterly in depicting movement, as can be seen in his renditions of dancers, racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.
At the beginning of his career, he wanted to be a history painter, a calling for which he was well prepared by his rigorous academic training and close study of classic art. In his early thirties, he changed course, and by bringing the traditional methods of a history painter to bear on contemporary subject matter, he became a classical painter of modern life.

The exhibition Edgar Degas -- The Late Work at Fondation Beyeler is the first show that is devoted exclusively to Edgar Degas (1834 - 1917) late work. It features more than 150 paintings, sculptures, drawings, pastels, prints, and photographs of the famous French artist, and explores in detail the richness of the artist's achievement in this phase of his career. The principal subjects were ballet dancers and female nudes, jockeys and racehorses, landscapes and portraits, which he depicted in ever new variations and combinations. Edgar Degas -- The Late Work at Fondation Beyeler is curated by Martin Schwander in collaboration with Michiko Kono. The exh...
Stepping aside briefly for art, here is French artist Edgar Degas, known primarily for his ballet, horse racing, and underbelly of Paris paintings. Born in 1834 to a fairly wealthy family, he started painting early, though his father wanted him to go to law school. He didn't work very hard at law, but ended up in Italy for three years studying art. Fortunately for us, he liked doing self-portraits as a form of finger exercise, so we haver lots of looks of him as he slowly aged. He died in 1917 at the age of 83. Music is Paul Mauriat's "Cent Mille Chansone."
Directed by : Nelson Castro Produced by : Les Raboteurs Production Genre: Fiction - Runtime: 20 min 52 seconds Production year: 2013 Now he is blind, Edgar Degas is no more than a shadow of himself. Paul Valery, a young poet, is the only one who keeps visiting. When there, Degas knows how to be the charming considerate man he used to be. The painter brings out his old notebooks and talks about his memories, his models. Paul Valery, truly interested, manages to make him talk about his privacy, and his secrets. Here she looks at Combing the Hair - 'La Coiffure' - by Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas. Interview with Art Historian Anne Breux on this exceptional Degas exhibition at the MFAH, Houston, TX. On view until Jan. 16, 2017
Cecily Brown is considered a central figure in the resurgence of painting at the turn of the century. We met the praised British painter at her New York studio for a talk about borrowing imagery from other artists, and how she has always responded to dark, scary art. “Art was something that seemed very glamorous and dangerous to me as a child.” Brown nurtured an early fascination with the “scary” art, such as Francis Bacon, and would rummage her parents’ art books for the very darkest pictures, such as a particular painting by George Grosz of a butcher shop with human meat in it: “I had sneak looks at it, like you might look at Playboy or something.” Brown, who had been painting naked women for several years, felt an urge to move on to painting men and boys. The painting ‘Young Spartans...

This week, we visit the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and our interviewer, Linda Mowl, speaks with Curator of Photography, Malcolm Daniel, about the photography in the exhibition, Degas: A New Vision. The exhibition is on view at the museum through January 16, 2017.
we finally made it to the 'A NEW VISION by EDGAR DEGAS' exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. he's always been one of my favourite painters (especially the dancers/ballerina series). even though I have seen his work a couple of times before in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, it was still great to see a full exhibition of his work through the years, and learn more about his life and work. it's been a great inspiration to end the weekend and to get motivated for monday morning... anyways, for those who are in Melbourne at the moment, you still have exactly one week to go see it! so don't miss out :-) — FOLLOW S H O P ☞ http://www.corn-co.com E T S Y ☞ https://www.etsy.com/shop/CORNandco I N S T A ( w o r k ) ☞ http://www.instagram.com/corn_co I N S T A ( p e r s o n ...
