In geography, statistics and archaeology, a settlement, locality or populated place is a community in which people live. A settlement can range in size from a small number of dwellings grouped together to the largest of cities with surrounding urbanized areas. Settlements may include hamlets, villages, towns and cities.
In the field of geospatial predictive modeling, settlements are "a city, town, village, or other agglomeration of buildings where people live and work".
A settlement conventionally includes its constructed facilities such as roads, enclosures, field systems, boundary banks and ditches, ponds, parks and woods, wind and water mills, manor houses, moats and churches.
The oldest remains that have been found of constructed dwellings are remains of huts that were made of mud and branches around 17,000 BC at the Ohalo site (now underwater) near the edge of the Sea of Galilee. The Natufians built houses, also in Palestine, around 10,000 BC. Remains of settlements such as villages become much more common after the invention of agriculture.

Leon Krier is one of the most provocative architects and urban theoreticians in the world today. In lectures, writings and design projects, he has developed a vision of traditional form for human settlements for contemporary society. In his latest book The Architecture of Community, he provides a contemporary road map for designing or completing today’s fragmented communities. The book contains descriptions and images of the author’s built and unbuilt projects, including projects in Seaside, Florida, as well as the town of Poundbury in England, which was commissioned by the Prince of Wales in 1988, and has become a model for ecological planning and building. He has taught architecture and urbanism at the Royal College of Arts in London and at Princeton and Yale universities, among other in...
In 2000, middle school graduate Liu Feng quit high school and started working to support his familly. Although he was under age for his family he started working illegally in Shanxi Province in Lin Feng City for his family's living. His job was a coal miner which is extremely dangerous. He would go to work from 7pm to 7am the next morning. He lost both arms when the blades on an excavator went through his left and right shoulder. He has lost his arms since the incident and was in intensive care unit. Now a court decreed that Liu Feng should be paid $114 (USD) every month for 20 years and compensation of $20,000 (USD), and agree to fit him with artificial arms per 5 years. But lately the economy in china has increased by 9 percent per year and for Liu it's the price he can't pay. Lu's f...

The Qumran Park is where the fascinating connection is made between the Dead Sea Scrolls, which were found in the Qumran Caves, and the people of the sect of the Essenes who lived here. The Qumran Scrolls were discovered in 1946 by a Bedouin shepherd who went to look for a missing goat and instead found a cave which contained scrolls hidden inside pottery jars. This find led to the discovery of more than 700 scrolls in the area. These findings shed light on the lives of the people of the Dead Sea sects who lived in the area at the time of the rule of the House of the Hasmoneans. These people led here secluded and ascetic lives, far from any human settlement. Among the scrolls are the earliest manuscripts of the Old Testament and they were preserved exceptionally well due to the desert wea...
