POISON IDEA
Blank Blackout Vacant (1992)
Label: Taang Records
Covers: Yes
Format: mp3 (192kbps - HQ)
HHA Rating: 9,5
pw = hagoverhard.blogspot.com

Though not quite the shotgun blast of an album that its predecessor, Feel the Darkness, was, Blank Blackout Vacant is nonetheless an ample testimony to Poison Idea's unbridled power and force. Suffused with enough hate, pain, and rage to fuel an entire army, Jerry A.'s vocals, positively dripping with bile and venom, certainly cement his ideas with passion and force. "Understated" is not a word that is possible to use with this band. Poison Idea, from their inception in the very early '80s through their terminal point, shone with bitter, violent power. Unlike most Poison Idea albums from the '80s, Blank Blackout Vacant doesn't rely on speed to get its point across. In fact, a song like "Forever and Always," with its loose, Aerosmith-like groove and its saxophone, presages the type of rock & roll that bands like Rocket from the Crypt would make years later. Many other songs reside in the same vein. The cover of the New York Dolls' "Vietnamese Baby" provides an interesting touch, amping up the original, while retaining its desperate, low-rent feeling. While not quite the bellowing, fire-breathing beast that is Feel the Darkness, Blank Blackout Vacant is a more varied, eclectic piece of work from this veteran American hardcore band.

7 SECONDS
Old School (1991)
Label: Headhunter Records
Covers: Yes
Format: mp3 (192kbps - HQ)
HHA Rating: 8,5
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

"Old School" is NOT a collection of rarities or demos. It is, however, one hell of a record. Quite possibly one the best punk records ever recorded, even if its not loud enough. It embodies that early 80s California punk sound (like early Dead Kennedys or Black Flag with Keith Morris). Compare that to the more 'hardcore' sound of the East Coast with bands like Urban Waste or Major Conflict (for an excellent resource, get familiar with Mad At the World Records). As the story goes (at the least the one I'm familiar with), 7 Seconds recorded this record for the Alternative Tentacles label, run by Jello Biafra. It was recorded somewhere between 1981 and 1983. You'll have to check the liner notes. This was SUPPOSED to be the band's full-length debut, but fell through the cracks because Alt. Tentacles just didn't have the funds. Later, 7 Seconds recorded the Crew for BYO, which although a landmark record, pales in comparison to the raw sound and energy embodied on Old School. Old School is simply what a punk record should sound like. This doesn't have that 'polished' sound that the Crew has, and thank God for that. Short, fast, chaotic and to the point. This sounds better than the Skins Brain & Guts 7" or Committed for Life 7", both of which have their own flaws (muddy sound), although each are great records. Stylistically and sound wise, it s a primitive version of the Crew or Walk Together, Rock Together, the band's 1985 effort (and perhaps their most valient punk record). From there the band began exploring different genres (listen to 'New Wind' ('86), 'Ourselves' ('87), 'Soulforce Revolution' ('89), 'Out the Shizzy' ('93?), 'The Music the Message' ('95), 'Good to Go ('99) and the recent 'Our Core' ('05). This record was finally released in 1990 or 1991, following the release of 'Soulforce Revolution', a wonderful record, heralded by some as the bands' U2 phase. In any event, your punk record collection has a serious void if you don't own this record. This is the sound, this is the beginning of it all. Although brilliant in its simplicity, I don't think anyone has captured it again so beautifully.

SUPERCHUNK
Here's to Shutting Up (2001)
Covers: Yes
Label: Merge
Format: mp3 (192kbps - HQ)
HHA Rating: 9.5
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

Based on the first few musical moments on the opening cut, "Late Century Dream," the verdict is in: Superchunk has matured into an intelligent pop/rock band with commercial potential. Though indie purists may scoff at this revelation, Here's to Shutting Up is an enjoyable and refreshing collection that owes as much to the classic sounds of Brian Wilson or early-'70s David Bowie as it does to the punk ethic that established this band as an important alternative to the mainstream in the early '90s. Bursting out of the gate with "Rainy Streets" and the traditional country-tinged "Phone Sex," Superchunk flexes its melodic muscle with an array of textures, balancing a pedal steel with keyboards, acoustic/electric guitars, ambient noises, and strings. Producer Brian Paulson continues in the vein of the band's previous release, Come Pick Me Up, whipping up arrangements that serve the songs with clarity and precision playing. For those who need to rock there is "Art Class (Song for Yayoi Kusama)," and for those who need to reflect there is "The Animal Has Left Its Shell." - - by Tom Semioli on Allmusic - -

HHA Rating: 10 CLASSIC !!!
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

Not the computer program, but a skatecore/crossover band from Venice, CA (where else?), Excel were musical baby brothers to hometown heroes Suicidal Tendencies, and recorded a trio of albums which became quite popular with informed fans of the genre, if not the music-buying masses. Formed in 1985 by vocalist Dan Clemente, guitarist Adam Siegel, bassist Shaun Ross, and drummer Greg Saenz, Excel debuted in 1987 with the well-intentioned but overly ST-dependent Split Image. They later learned a few original tricks of their own for 1989's slightly improved The Joke's on You, but split up for a few years before recording 1995's funk-thrash swan song Seeking Refuge -- by which time they'd started sounding more like San Francisco's Mordred.

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS
(1988) Tender Prey
Covers: Yes
Label: Mute Records
Format: mp3
HHA Rating: 9,5 AMAZING !!!
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

With guitarist/keyboardist Roland Wolf and Cramps/Gun Club veteran Kid Congo Powers on guitar added to the ranks, along with guest appearances from old member Hugo Race, the Seeds reached 1988 with their strongest album yet, the insanely powerful, gripping Tender Prey. Rather than simply redoing what they'd already done, Nick Cave and company took their striking musical fusions to deeper and higher levels all around, with fantastic consequences. The album boldly starts out with an undisputed Cave masterpiece -- "The Mercy Seat," a chilling self-portrait of a prisoner about to be executed that compares the electric chair with the throne of God. Queasy strings from a Gini Ball-led trio and Mick Harvey's spectral piano snake through a rising roar of electric sound -- a common musical approach from many earlier Seeds songs, but never so gut-wrenching as here. Cave's own performance is the perfect icing on the cake, commanding and powerful, excellently capturing the blend of crazed fear and righteousness in the lyrics. Matching that high point turns out to be impossible for anything else on Tender Prey, but more than enough highlights take a bow that demonstrates the album's general quality. "Deanna" is another great blast from the Seeds, a garage rock-style rave-up that lyrically is everything Natural Born Killers tried to be, but failed at -- killing sprees, Cadillacs, and carrying out the work of the Lord, however atypically. The echoing, gentle-yet-rough sonics on the Blind Willie Johnson-inspired "City of Refuge" and the gentler drama of "Sugar Sugar Sugar" also do well in keeping the energy level up. On the quieter side, Cave indulges his penchant for gloomy piano-led ballads throughout, and quite well at that, with such songs as "Watching Alice," "Mercy," and the end-of-the-evening singalong "New Morning." "Sunday's Slave" has a beautifully brooding feeling to it thanks to the combination of acoustic guitar and piano, making it a bit of a cousin of Scott Walker's "Seventh Seal."

ASH
(2000) Numbskull (EP)
Label: Mushroom
Format: mp3
Size: 16.83 mb (.zip)
Country: Northern Ireland
HHA Rating: 8,0
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

Irish punk-pop trio Ash first formed in 1989 when childhood mates Tim Wheeler and Mark Hamilton got guitars for Christmas and established the metal act Vietnam. Nothing more than something for kicks, Vietnam switched to Ash in 1992 as Wheeler (guitar/vocals), Hamilton (bass), and Rick "Rock" McMurray (drums) aimed to be something more serious. They shared a love for the raw British punk of the Buzzcocks and crafted their musical talents to take the Brit-pop scene by storm at the start of the decade. NME was swooning over these "teen punkers from Belfast," and by 1994 Ash had signed to Infectious Records to issue the Trailer EP later that fall.

(1986) The Joke's On You
Label: Caroline
Covers: Yes
Size: 56,14 mb (.zip)
HHA Rating: 10 EXCELENT !!!
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

Excel flowered into bandhood smack-dab in the middle of the the "crossover" movement (Discharge circa 1982, meet Black Sabbath circa 1975. Black Sabbath, meet Discharge) that happened in the mid-1980s. Their first album, Split Image, is a crossover classic, though it wasn't what you would call a "wildly successful" record, even by 'punk' standards. As the 1980s drew to a close, the crossover movement began to fade a bit, as is evident on this, the follow up. The Joke's On You was actually recorded in two sessions. Side 1 of the LP was recorded in 1988, and originally intended to be an EP. The songs on side 2 were recorded a year later, to round out an entire album. (It was released in 1989, not 1986. Split Image was released in 1987.) While not sounding too drastically different from the first album, these songs contain LETHAL doses of "groove" and "boogie". It's still metallic and very hard, but it's also definitely a more mature sound. These guys are all seriously talented musicians, and Randy Burns' production was spot on as always. Get it. California, hardcore with trash influences, adrenaline in the veins, so speed, so incendiary, total madness...

Mr. T EXPERIENCE
(1999) The Alcatraz
Covers: No
Format: mp3 (VBR - HQ)
Size: 64.38 mb (.zip)
Country: USA
HHA Rating: 10 ESSENTIAL !!!
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

Any account of Dr. Frank's talents should clearly be topped with his knack for addictive melody and lyrical wit. But he also owns a penchant for astute observation, as evidenced by older songs such as "Dumb Little Band" and "At Gilman Street." It's that gift that he brings to Alcatraz's "I Wrote a Book About Rock and Roll," a knowing jab at critics that should make most rock writers cringe in recognition ("I compare the Shaggs to Wittgenstein -- how cool is that?" he sings in referential one-upmanship). Though none of the songs on Alcatraz match this gem, the album will nonetheless please MTX fans. Frank continues to explore the acoustic and undistorted electric guitar stylings he's tinkered with since the mid-'90s, while also importing elements such as horns and a variety of keyboards. This is his third full-length outing with bassist Joel Reader and drummer Jim "Jym" Ruzicka, who have settled in as a fine backing unit. Still, the album succeeds because of Frank's longstanding abilities. "Our Days Are Numbered" and "I Feel for You" (not the Prince song of the same name) boast structures and melodies that wouldn't seem out of place on Broadway; "Two of Us" sparkles with clever sentimentality. Predictable? Sure, but with MTX, the familiar is always pretty fine. - - by Chris Nelson (www.allmusic.com) - -

GARAGE FUZZ
(2005) The Morning Walk
Format: mp3 (128kbps)
Size: 48,69 mb (.zip)
Country: Brasil
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com
Rating: 8,5

Outros momentos sublimes ficam para "A Mutt Running Nowhere", "In The Following Years" e a vinheta final "A Wonderful Thing To Taste", inteira tocada em violões, algo inédito na carreira do grupo.
Repito, disco do ano. Ponto final.

With their first full length release, the 12 Step Rebels capture the desolate and rugged feel of the desert southwest within the twelve tracks of Go, Go Graveyard Rockin' with the 12 Step Rebels...Also drawing upon influences such as classic Country, 1950's Rockabilly, Punk Rock and blended with a horror motif, they create an identifiable sound. Using these influences, this album has diverse songs ranging from the dreary, melodic Ballad of Frankenstein's Monster to the 50's-style boogie Graveyard Rockin' or the punk-influenced anthem Rebel Rock.
Frontman Jakob Insane brings a distinct vocal persona and energetic passion along with a unique guitar sound. Complimenting Jakob's undeniable energy, Nate Hancock delivers a dark, melodic edge on the Upright Bass and contributes lead vocals on two tracks as well. Filling out the band's charismatic sound is Mad Dog Chad's explosive and powerful drumming, harmonies and back-up vocals.

This a female five piece, although some members look like guys. Obviously they have went back and listened to the first Siouxsie record. Why they did this I am not so sure. "Shotgun" sounds more like Altered Images "Dead Pop Stars" than the Banshees (remember that Altered Images started out as a Siouxsie thing too). There are a bunch of new wave and early goth sounds throughout. There's a lot of hostility for "a rich white man" and the fact that "my daddy doesn't love me." Most of the other lyrics are vague and suggest lesbianism. Every with all that against them, Radio Vago seem pretty good. Who knows what they are trying to achieve or if they can pull it off live. They remind me of some of those strange bands in the early LA punk Scene like The Bags and Catholic Discipline.

D.R.I.
(1985) Dealing With It
Label: Rotten Records
Format: mp3 (VBR)
Size: 54.55 mb (.zip)
Hangoevr Rating: 8.0

About two years prior to the groundbreaking release of Dealing With it, D.R.I. was known in their home turf of Texas as a hardcore, left of center, politically driven band. D.R.I. emerged from a Texan music bed often referred to as the "vat" scene (due to the lack of practice space, bands would often rehearse in empty beer vat warehouses). Verbal Abuse, Sick Pleasure, and the Dicks also rose up from the same ranks. Released just two years after Suicidal Tendencies' self-titled debut, another visceral, genre-defining debut of similar ilk, Dealing With it will forever stand as D.R.I.'s most compelling record of their often misguided career. Taking the Suicidal concept one step further, D.R.I.'s hardcore/thrash metal hybrid, Dealing With it reinvented the wheel by combining the humor and politics of Suicidal's debut with the speed and trash of Slayer's early records like Show No Mercy and the Haunting the Chapel EP. Embraced by skaters, punkers, and thrashers alike, ultra-fast songs like "Mad Man" and "Couch Slouch effortlessly alternate with the hilarious, longer, chugga-chugga rants of "Nursing Home Blues" and the monstrous "I Don't Need Society." The latter, featuring the classic rant "Your number's up/you have to go/the system says I told you so/stocked in a plane like a truckload of cattle/thousands of us sent off to die/never really knowing why" culminating with the ever reliable rant, "f**k this system, it can't have me, I don't need society." Worth having.

D.R.I.
(1984) Dirty Rotten LP+Violent Pacification EP
Label: Dirty Rotten
Format: mp3 (192kbps)
Size: 37,58 mb (.zip)
Hangover Rating: 8.0

Starting with the awesome "I Don't Need Society" and ending with the anthemic "Explorer," D.R.I.'s debut album was an important stepping stone in the evolution of both metal and hardcore. D.R.I. drew a line in the sand between the American hardcore bands who wanted to stick close to the original punk sound and bands who wanted to branch out into heavy metal territory. D.R.I.'s use of thunderous heavy metal drumming and California hardcore songwriting made Dirty Rotten LP something special, putting them in a category with Corrosion of Conformity and Suicidal Tendencies as the forefront of a new movement. Their angry lyrics revolved around the usual political and social ills, but their approach was a staggering blend of pre-grindcore blastbeats (that particular drumming style may have even had its first recorded instance here), blunt and simplistic guitar riffs, and an acidic vocal workout from the young Kurt Brecht. His charismatic shout was the tone-deaf glue that kept the band together, especially in the face of abbreviated songs and sloppy playing. With some humorous lyrics, endless enthusiasm, and a penchant for short song times (only one song makes it past the two-minute mark), D.R.I.'s debut was a landmark album that paved the way for exciting new hardcore bands to spring up in its wake.

ANTI-HEROES
(1999) Underneath the Underground
Label: GMM Recs.
Size: 33,7 MB (.zip)
Format: mp3 (160kbps)
Hangover Rating: 7,5 out of 10.

The Anti-Heroes last album American Pie was an absolute classic. The kick to the head street punk was in full force along with songs that danced on the grave of Jerry Garcia. Just ignore the lyrical content that shifts towards the right wing direction and it's an instant party. This time around with Underneath the Underground, the Anti-Heroes still maintain that grumpy old man attitude with the message of "kill your radio, kill your TV, buy American, " etc. Tough as nails and a lot of fun, but it's just not as explosive and in your face as their last album; at least they win the creative song title award for "Rich People Don't Go To Jail." - - by Mike DaRonco (Allmusic.com) - -

Label: Taang Records
Size: 28,1 MB (.zip)
Format: mp3 (128kbps)
Hangover Rating: 9 out of 10

Review by Mike DaRonco (Allmusic.com)
Imagine if comedian Sam Kinison arose from the dead and rekindled his career by singing in an Oi! street-punk band. In a nutshell, that's basically the Anti-Heros, and they do incorporate a sense of humor with their gruff, take-no-slack-from-anyone attitude. "Carte Blanche gor Chaos," for example, talks about stirring up ruckus in the streets of Atlanta, Georgia: "Used a stereo to bash his head in/TV through the window/Long hair through the wall." Then, on "Jerry Was a Piece of Shit," they dance on the grave of the deceased Grateful Dead frontman: "He's the old hippie who made us sick/Had a beer belly and a tie-dyed shirt/Said he'd live forever but now he sleeps in the dirt." Ouch. Obviously, a lot of people won't agree with what the Anti-Heros have to say, nor would the band probably care.

ANTI-HEROES
(2000) 1.000 Nights of Chaos
Label: Taang Records
Size: 44,18 MB (.zip)
Hangover Rating: 6 out of 10.

A collection of live tracks, 1000 Nights of Chaos delivers the goods if all you're looking for is the sweaty physicality of the best Oi! or street punk, but unfortunately, it falls short in some other crucial areas. At 48 minutes, it's nearly half-an-hour longer than the best street punk sets, which invariably get it across in 30 minutes or less. By the time of the blindingly fast but nearly unrecognizable cover of the Clash's "White Riot," the energy of the album is flagging, so much so that by the end — a truly terrible cover of Patti Smith's "Rock and Roll Nigger" — all of the songs have just started blurring together. The occasional exceptions, like the anti-Grateful Dead hoot "Jerry Was a Piece of Shit," are thrown into sharper relief by the relative mediocrity of their surroundings. It also doesn't help that the sound quality is, at times, near bootleg level, robbing the songs of much of their visceral wallop.

(1993) Why Do The Call Me Mr. Happy?
Covers: Yes
Label: Alternative Tentacles
Format: mp3 (128 - High Quality)
Ripped: JAP (Jet Audio Plus)
Country: Canada
Size: 54,61 MB (.zip)

Having never heard a full album by them, and completely blown away by their live show, I borrowed this CD from a friend. I was not disappointed. With energy that belies the age of the players, "Why Do They Call Me Mr. Happy?" features some of the heaviest, smartest punk available. The brothers Wright are among punk rock's best (and most prolific) storytellers and lyricists, as evidenced in tracks such as "The River" and "Cats, Sex and Nazis." They are also masters of their respective instuments, expressing their ideas in perfect tandem with the vocal "melodies."
Also contained on this album is the hilarious tongue-in-cheek humor typical of NoMeansNo: "Chairman Mao was a great cook...he fed all of China" from "Kill Everyone Now." Get in on the joke, get this album.

7 SECONDS
(1987) Soulforce Revolution
Format: mp3 (128kbps)
Ripped: Jet Audio Plus
Label: Restless Records
Country: USA

Soulforce Revolution_ did not take me by surprise at all when it came out. Their previous effort, _Ourselves_, was a staple of my boom box and remains to this day one of my favorite 7 Seconds albums. And while that album softened the attack somewhat, there were still plenty squalling guitars and high-engery riffs. This album, on the other hand, is probably the closest that the band ever got to straight-up pop and if you are looking for the classic speedy hardcore riffs I would definitely advise you to check out elsewhere in the catalog. Its closest to Kevin Seconds' later solo work in spirit and lyrical approach, with a much larger dose of 80s dissillusioned neohippie attitude that was barely contained beneath the surface on earlier 7 Seconds albums. Both this album and the rare _Praise_ EP alienated many a 7 Seconds fan who to this day cannot forgive.

O.K. folks, this be the rock'n'roll album of the century! The Turks got me into buyin' music again after a self imposed exile from rock'n'roll caused by grunge in the early 90's ( this "new" garage revival is gettin' me down too by the way!)I simply can't describe how I felt when the raw, heart-felt and rockin' sounds of this album came blastin' from my hi-fi set. This stuff makes ya' feel all angry, sad and really darn happy all at the same time. The Turks walk a fine line between pure rage and absolute enthusiasm and it is impossible not to get wrapped up in the moment! The best part is that these guys create totally IRONY FREE rock'n'roll,they really mean it and it shows. No matching red and white outfits, no cute shaggy hair, no matching Blues Brothers-like suits and NO marketing strategy. You WILL buy this. You WILL love it. Is it just coincidence that everyone gives this album five? The answer - NO.That's because it's one of the best albums of the 90s - if not the best. In fact, it's just as much a punk classic as the first albums by the Ramones or the Cramps or New York Dolls. Thank god there's still bands like the Turks who beleive in the devine powers of rock 'n' roll, and that punk is a great way to bring those powers out. A vital rock 'n' roll document for one and all who want to save rock 'n' roll from the clutches of MTV and popular radio. Best songs: "Born Toulouse-Letoric", "Runnin' On Go", "Mr. Suit", "I'm Weak", and "Crying In the Beer of a Drunk Man". Than again, not a single song is bad.

Label: Hopeless Recs.
Country: USA
Buy at: http://www.amazon.com

The Queers most short-lived lineup (Joe Queer plus a few New Hampshire highschool kids) produced four awesome songs that make this the best of the many Queers EP's out there. The first song is an alternate version of Punk Rock Confidential superhit Everything's OK, which has a different second verse. Secondly is Queerbait, a nice, fast, new song with a lot of attitude. Next comes Get a Life and Live It Loser, a kick-ass song kept from full length album release until Pleasant Screams arrives in April 2002. Lastly, is an alternative version of the Queers' cover of Banana Split's catchy song I Enjoy Being a Boy. This EP has a good mix of love and attitude songs, be sure to pick it up!
