Threads is a 1984 BAFTA award-winning British television drama, produced jointly by the BBC, Nine Network and Western-World Television Inc. Written by Barry Hines and directed by Mick Jackson, it is a docudrama account of nuclear war and its effects on the city of Sheffield in Northern England.
The primary plot centres on two families, the working-class Kemps and the middle-class Becketts, as a confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union erupts and escalates. As the United Kingdom prepares for war, the members of each family deal with their own personal crises. Meanwhile, a secondary storyline with the Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council serves to illustrate the British government's then-current continuity of government arrangements. As the nuclear exchange between NATO and the Warsaw Pact begin, the film depicts the terrible details of the characters' struggles to survive both the attacks and their aftermath. The balance of the story outlines the fate of each family as the characters face the medical, economic, social and environmental consequences of nuclear war.

Originally broadcast 10 March 1980. I have spent a LONG time trying to source this. This 1980 episode of Panorama, featuring a fresh-faced Jeremy Paxman, takes a look at the UK Government's preparations for the public in the event of a possible outbreak of Nuclear War. This pre-dates the seminal 'Threads' by 4 years, as well as a coming a couple of years earlier than 'QED: A Guide to Armageddon' Another little bit of fascinating Cold War history. PS: I have removed a 30 second clip of Protect and Survive from this upload to prevent a copyright infringement.
Over the course of 60 mins we take you back in time to the early 1980's when the very real threat of global destruction by nuclear weapons produced two brilliant and very distinct television movies covering the subject; 1983's 'The Day After', produced by ABC and directed by Nick Meyer (yes 'Wrath of Khan' Nick Meyer), and 1984's 'Threads', produced by BBC and directed by Mick Jackson (who also made another of my favourite TV movies 'Indictment: The McMartin Trial' from 1995). One of these films shows a fictional depiction of a nuclear holocaust. The other film IS the nuclear holocaust. As I say on the show, you will see some very disturbing and unpleasant images during this show and viewer discretion is advised.
This is the Newsnight Nuclear Debate that was originally broadcast just after the BBC first showed Barry Hines' 'Threads' and 'On the 8th Day'. Also see the 1980 episode of Panorama - If the bomb drops https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=milbW4RDIco

Verse One
There Is A Thread
Running Between
The First And The Last
Breath That We Breathe
And In This Strand
Of Flesh And Bone
Reside The Hopes
And Dreams We Call Our Own.
Chorus
And There's A Hand
That Sews The Threads Together
Around One Strand
Of Saving Scarlet Thread
Come As You Are
Weary, Worn, And Tattered
Come And Take
Your Place Among The Threads.
Verse Two
There Is A Thread
Sometimes Unseen
Moving Through Life's Tapestry
And When This Strand
Enters A Soul
It's Woven To The One That Makes
Us Whole.
Chorus
And There's A Hand
That Sews The Threads Together
Around One Strand
Of Saving Scarlet Thread
Come As You Are
Weary, Worn And Tattered
Come And Take Your Place
Among The Threads
Come And Take Your Place
