Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, PC, DL, FRS, RA (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British statesman who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. Churchill was also an officer in the British Army, a historian, a writer (as Winston S. Churchill), and an artist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature, and was the first person to be made an honorary citizen of the United States.
Churchill was born into the family of the Dukes of Marlborough, a branch of the Spencer family. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a charismatic politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer; his mother, Jennie Jerome, was an American socialite. As a young army officer, he saw action in British India, the Sudan, and the Second Boer War. He gained fame as a war correspondent and wrote books about his campaigns.
At the forefront of politics for fifty years, he held many political and cabinet positions. Before the First World War, he served as President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, and First Lord of the Admiralty as part of Asquith's Liberal government. During the war, he continued as First Lord of the Admiralty until the disastrous Gallipoli Campaign caused his departure from government. He then briefly resumed active army service on the Western Front as commander of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He returned to government under Lloyd George as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War, Secretary of State for Air, then Secretary of State for the Colonies. After two years out of Parliament, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Baldwin's Conservative government of 1924–1929, controversially returning the pound sterling in 1925 to the gold standard at its pre-war parity, a move widely seen as creating deflationary pressure on the UK economy.

June 1944. Allied Forces stand on the brink: a million soldiers are secretly assembled on the south coast of Britain, poised to invade Nazi-occupied Europe. One man stands in their way: Winston Churchill (Brian Cox). Exhausted by years of war and plagued by depression, Churchill is a shadow of the hero who has resisted Hitler’s Blitzkrieg. Should the D-Day landings fail, he is terrified he’ll be remembered as the architect of carnage. Only the unflinching support of Churchill’s brilliant, unflappable wife Clementine can halt the Prime Minister’s physical and mental collapse. Brian Cox joins us to have a conversation on his role as the iconic figure and the film, "Churchill." Interview at 692 Broadway in NYC for BUILD Series.

Clashing with his Allied political opponents U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower (John Slattery) and British Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery (Julian Wadham), the troubled Churchill receives support and devotion from his wife, the brilliant and unflappable C...

The great PM gives one of his most famous speeches. It starts off quite calmly but the old master builds the suspence. Once Churchill was speaking in Parliament and was slightly muddled and incoherent in his speech. A rather unattractive lady MP on the opposite benches declared to Churchill: 'Sir, you are drunk!'. To which he replied 'Madame that may be true, but in the morning I shall be sober whereas you will still be ugly'.
In the early years of World War II it seemed that Adolf Hitler was unstoppable, but after Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of Britain in 1940, things didn't ever go quite to plan for the German Fuhrer again. Within days of moving into Number Ten Downing Street, Churchill had launched Operation Dynamo to rescue more than 330,000 allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk.
From the film INTO THE STORM, Brendan Gleeson re-enacts Winston Churchill’s famous speech to the House of Commons on 4 June 1940, immediately following the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk and on the eve of a likely Nazi invasion of Great Britain. In reality, Unlike some of his other great wartime speeches, Churchill's 4 June speech in the House of Commons was not actually broadcast by Churchill on the radio; extracts were read on that evening's BBC news broadcast. Yet it often considered his finest oration. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_shall_fight_on_the_beaches
This drama-documentary evokes what it was like to work closely with Churchill in the Cabinet War Rooms during the dark days of the Blitz and the later bombing raids on London. The programme combines superb archive film from the Imperial War Museum's vast collection, with atmospheric dramatisations actually filmed inside the Cabinet War Rooms -- the real locations from where Churchill led the nation. The programme includes first-hand accounts which reveal the challenges of working with Britain's bullish war leader at close quarters. The programme then traces the key stages of the war from Churchill's viewpoint -- his relationship with President Roosevelt, the turning point at El Alamein, D-Day and the final journey to victory. At his finest hour he is defeated in the General Election in t...
Music: M83 Speech: Excerpt from Winston Churchill's address to the Congress of the United States, December 26, 1941 "Sure I am that this day, now, we are the masters of our fate. That the task which has been set us is not above our strength. That its pangs and toils are not beyond our endurance. As long as we have faith in our cause, and an unconquerable willpower, salvation will not be denied us. In the words of the Psalmist: "He shall not be afraid of evil tidings. His heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord."

The holocaust is something I have thought about often as a child, especially as a 3-year-old with a vivid imagination and my father sitting me in front of the television to watch Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' film. I have always wanted to visit the German Nazi concentration camps and let the seriousness and power of it envelop me, humble me, and change me. It was one of the most chilling moments of my life, also because of how peaceful and beautiful the camps were. Spring flowers blooming bright and birds playfully jumping over the brick rubble. The calm breeze definitely added to its eeriness. Pol...

Owner Pom Harrington presents a splendid group of first edition books and documents charting Churchill’s growing regard for Dr. David Roberts. A relationship borne of necessity and expediency, shading to friendship and becoming a real intimacy; the reality of which is utterly confirmed by the warmth and sincerity of Clementine’s heartfelt notes of thanks. The Churchill’s clearly thought very highly of Dr. Roberts, but it is a relationship which left few traces, because as Gilbert pointedly remarks, “Unlike Lord Moran, [Roberts] kept no diary.” This set inscribed identically in vols. "Churchill was more fun than anybody else in the 1930s," explains writer and TV news producer Patrick McMenamin. "He drank, he smoked cigars and he had better one-liners than anyone else. What's not to like?" Along with his co-author father, Michael, the McMenamins are the creators of the Winston Churchill Thrillers novel series, described by one reviewer as "Winston Churchill meets Indiana Jones." The series takes place during Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s when he was out of political office. Michael McMenamin, a Reason Contributing Editor, describes the '30s as a time when "democracy was in peril...thought to be a thing of the past" and that "fascism, Nazism, communism (were) thought to be the wave of the future." It was during this time that Churchill was a lonely voice ...

The central aim of this project was to help young people understand and reflect the experiences of refugees. For this, students from Winston Churchill School have been trained in interview technique to carry out a series of in-depth video interviews with refugees. There have also been contextualizing workshops, and the students produced art work in response to the interviews. The exhibition (shown at The Lightbox for a month, at the Surrey History Centre and also at the venue of the new Community Play) incorporates the film, still images, students’ artworks and text. The film will also be distributed to schools and made available on the web. The project has been supported by MLA as part of Their Past Your Future 2 and by the Lottery Fund.
Most people regard scientology “churches” with dubious fear, seeing them as dangerous brainwashing centres for the cult. As for me, I just thought it was downright pathetic. I rang up Birmingham Scientology asking for a personality test, claiming to have received on of their flyers some weeks ago. They fitted me in within the next ten minutes, and soon I found myself at the Winston Churchill House office building, pressing the elevator button for the Church of Scientology, 2nd floor, right above some random advertising firm called Arcedia. I was greeted by a smiling Chris Wrapson as soon as I reached the top floor. He told me to sit down for a minute as he called Peter [pictured] into the room. Both very cheery, Peter ushered me into a large empty space to complete the test. This bizarre...

To say I'm excited to share the following interview with my friend Gemini Adams would be a huge understatement. Gemini is such a source of light, radiance, consciousness and love that your heart deserves to know her work and connect with her powerful message. I was first introduced to Gemini by another dear friend of mine Hillary Rubin and found her to be such an inspiration not just because of what she shares but because who she is at her core. From the second I started speaking with her I got a real sense of a humble, kind and soulful person who has a true mission to help heal the world and serve others in many creative and generous ways. Please take the time to listen to her story since it can open up a different reality for the legacy you end up leaving when you depart from this earth...

Dodging German U-boats as she darted across the Atlantic, the Queen Mary transported Winston Churchill to America & Canada for several historic meetings during and after WWII. These meetings including the secret Atlantic Conference & Charter with President Roosevelt, the signing of the D-Day Declaration, and his famous 'Iron Curtain' trip to Fulton, Missouri with President Truman. Churchill once dubbed Queen Mary his "headquarters at sea" and believed that she, along with the Queen Elizabeth, had shortened WWII by at least a year. -- Production Company: Cardinal Films Director: Job Hall Director of Photography: Mark Bella Executive Producer: Chris Wilmoth Producer: Job Hall Gaffer: Jonathan Spencer Post Production: Cardinal Films Editor: Job Hall Sound Mix & Design: Defacto Sound Music...

My new class giving a peak at my creative process! skl.sh/matty Please Use Headphones for best sound experience. :) Poland is a country with a very brutal past, even so recent at just 70 years ago. Pol...
