Primahood: drawings and comics by Tyler Cohen

April 13 - May 22, 2017

Reception April 13, 5 – 8 pm

1349 Mission Street, SF

Join us at happy hour to view Tyler Cohen’s art exhibition and a sampling of prurient, outspoken queer comics from our library. Tyler Cohen’s comics have appeared online in PEN America/PEN Illustrated and

MuthaMagazine.com

and in numerous books including QU33R (Northwest Press), Alphabet (Stacked Deck Press) and The Feminist Utopia Project (Feminist Press).

Known for exquisite line drawings that delve into the female experience, Tyler’s comics examine issues on her mind including bisexual visibility, parenthood, race and intersectional feminism all with a biting critique and humor. Her newest book, Primahood: Magenta (Stacked Deck, 2016), unites two bodies of work; Mamapants is full of conversations and observations, and Primazonia allows the viewer to spy into a world of disturbing scenarios that eerily resemble the everyday.

Center for Sex and Culture is a community center providing judgment-free education, cultural events, library, archive and gallery to audiences across the gender and sexual spectrum.

San Francisco “Hot Squirming - Erotic Humiliation Play: The Why. The How. The What To Avoid.” with Midori

Why do people get off on being embarrassed or humiliated? Is this a style of play you’ve struggled to understand? Do you want to understand how to do this well and avoid disasters? What are the potential psychological ramifications? What’s different for a one-time scene vs. playing with your life partner? Emphasizing emotional safety throughout, Midori will explore a wide range of play from light teasing and embarrassment to serious humiliation.

What’s the difference between a healthy and constructive scene and one that is destructive and harmful?

She will share with you a unique model she’s developed to better understand and create an experience that is hot for all the players involved.

Are you trying to better understand this difficult subject? Have you questioned yourself on your desires or ability to make another squirm? Or have you ever secretly wanted to be put on the spot or shown how really naughty you are? Then this class is for you!

This is a lecture style class with disucssions and visual examples.   Yes, you will witness the real deal, a live humiliation scene, as part of this learning experience.

The Godless Perverts Holiday Fun Time Party

Godless Perverts is throwing our annual Holiday Fun Time party on Saturday, December 10, 8-11 pm! Who says the holidays are only for the believers? Just as families don’t stop giving presents after the kids realize that Santa is a fake, the godless can have a great time during the holidays even without any gods, deities, angels, or spirits watching over them. And Godless Perverts Holiday Fun Time is just the place to do it! It’s at the Center for Sex and Culture, 1349 Mission St. in San Francisco, between 9th and 10th Streets, near the Civic Center BART station. (Yes, the location has changed! This is the new, correct location.) And this year, we’re making it a fundraiser for St. James Infirmary, the health clinic for sex workers in San Francisco!

We’ll have:

Festive food and drink! It’s a potluck: we’ll provide food, but we’d love to add your holiday treats to the buffet.
Adorably ridiculous icebreaker games!
Atheist holiday songs, celebrating the improper, twisted, and just plain silly!
Door prizes, including books and DVDs that are godless, pervy, or both!

And this year, Donna will be doing debaptisms! In fact, she’ll undo any religious initiation ceremony you like. Baptisms, confirmations, Bar or Bat Mitzvahs, Wiccanings — you name it, she’ll undo it! Donna is a fully certified Humanist celebrant, so when you’re debaptised, you stay that way.

Blasphemous costumes, sexy costumes, awesome combinations of the above, and other festive garb are encouraged, but by no means required.

This year’s party is a benefit for St. James Infirmary. St. James is a unique healthcare resource, even in San Francisco. Founded by and for sex workers, they provide free, compassionate and nonjudgmental healthcare and social services for current and former sex workers of all genders and sexual orientations. We wholeheartedly support the organization, and we want to help them out. So all donations collected at the party will go directly to St. James Infirmary. Last year we raised over $900 for them: let’s see if we can beat that this year!

We’re asking for donations of $10-$20 at the door — but please just donate what you can, whether that’s less than $10, or more than $20. (We’re also collecting funds now to cover the costs of throwing the party — please help make it happen if you can!)

Godless Perverts Holiday Fun Time is at the Center for Sex and Culture, 1349 Mission St. in San Francisco, between 9th and 10th Streets, near the Civic Center BART station. (Please note the new, correct location!) Saturday, December 10, 8:00 to 11:00 pm. We hope to see you there!

Watermelon Woman 3.0 art reception Saturday 11/12/16 7-10 pm

Curatorial Team: Melonie Green, Melorra Green and Dorothy Santos

Featured Artists:   Indira Allegra, Eliza Barrios, Bushmama Africa, Wanda K. Whitaker, Ramekon O’Arwisters, Jassmyn Fowlkes, Yetunde Olagbaju, Tim Roseborough, Ajuan Mance

Watermelon Woman is not only the first African-American lesbian film but it is also a platform for deeper dialog about the importance of archiving African American history - in particular African-American queer history. The Watermelon Woman 3.0 exhibition is critical for this moment in time because the issues addressed by the film twenty years ago are still impacting the queer and trans communities of color. Through the exhibition, public programming, and artist talks, we want to uncover the taboo about Black and POC queer women: how we love, who we love, and beauty politics. Our goals are for these conversations and interactions to spark new resources for queer history, news and empowering philosophies to become accessible through a multitude of mediums and ensure the intellectual knowledge is created by and for queer people of color to learn, discover, and continue our powerful history and continued resilience.

The Watermelon Woman 3.0 is an interactive program where academic partners, artists of various mediums and creative technologies, and socially conscious venue partners unite to pay homage, celebrate and highlight the cultural relevance of the legendary film, Watermelon Woman by filmmaker, Cheryl Dunye. We are queer women identified curators of color who have a passion for the empowerment of queer and trans lives, as well as creating space for artists of various skill levels and ability. Our goals are to educate people about the film, investigate modern day watermelon women, the mammy figure, and explore the issues and work being done in the Black queer and trans movements.
