São Tomé and Príncipe (/ˌsaʊ təˈmeɪ ən ˈprɪnsᵻpə/ SOW-tə-MAY-ən PRIN-si-pə or /ˈprɪnsᵻpeɪ/ PRIN-si-pay;Portuguese pronunciation: [sɐ̃w̃ tuˈmɛ i ˈpɾĩsɨpɨ]) officially the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, is a Portuguese-speaking island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa. It consists of two archipelagos around the two main islands: São Tomé and Príncipe, located about 140 kilometres (87 mi) apart and about 250 and 225 kilometres (155 and 140 mi), respectively, off the northwestern coast of Gabon.
The islands were uninhabited until their discovery by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century. Gradually colonized and settled by Portugal throughout the 16th century, they collectively served as a vital commercial and trade center for the Atlantic slave trade. The rich volcanic soil and close proximity to the equator made São Tomé and Príncipe ideal for sugar cultivation, followed later by cash crops such as coffee and cocoa; the lucrative plantation economy was heavily dependent upon imported African slaves. Cycles of social unrest and economic instability throughout the 19th and 20th centuries culminated in peaceful independence in 1975. São Tomé and Príncipe has since remained one of Africa's most stable and democratic countries.

Santa Cruz (Praia da Vitória)
History
Since the beginning of the island's settlement, Praia has been an important centre: it was the centre of the first Captaincy of Terceira (1456-1470), under the command of Jácome de Bruges, then the first Donatary-Captain. Praia was elevated to the status town in 1480, under the stewardship of then Donatry-Captain Álvaro Martins Homem. At the end of the 15th and then 16th century, it contributed to the economy and prosperity of the region.
In 1582, D. António, Prior of Crato disembarked in the Praia, escaping his conflict with Phillip II of Spain, where he was acclaimed by the people's of the Azores. At the end of the Phillippian dynastic union, Francisco Ornelas da Câmara acclaimed D. John IV of Portugal as King of Portugal on 24 March 1641 in the courtyard of the parochial church. He was supported by the gathered populous, ending a period of Spanish occupation.
During the Liberal Wars between Liberals and Absolutists (1828-1834) the citizens of Praia sided with Liberal faction, resulting in a battle on 11 August 1829. An Miguelist armada, that included 21 ships and military troops that landed, confronted the local population, who resisted heroically and defeated the powerful armada. This victory influenced Queen D. Maria II to change and bestow the name of Praia da Vitória to community.

Tom (animated TV series)
Tom or Tom the greatest friend was a children's television cartoon first broadcast in 2007 and produced by the Cromossoma (The Triplets) which was subsequently broadcast in several European countries. The show followed the adventures of the titular character, "Tom", who was the last remaining dinosaur, as he traveled around the world with the circus ran by his friends. The series followed their travels to different countries and landmarks including the Eiffel Tower and the canals of Venice, whilst also following the attempts of two bungling criminals; Weedon and Hatch, to kidnap Tom for their boss, the equally inept Mr Carter.
The show was unique in that it used a blend of both 2D and 3D animation. The show primarily employed 2D animation for the characters and scenes, however 3D models were utilised for chase sequences and occasional landscape shots.

Maria DO CEU MADUREIRA is Portuguese but she has adopted the island of Principe as her home. She is doing research in ethnopharmacology for the prestigious University of Coimbra in Portugal. She is a specialist in plants and their medicinal uses. Discovering new treatments to relieve and heal people is the goal of Maria’s whole life and why she is tirelessly hikes through the mountains of these islands.

This morning, someone at my guesthouse told me that the Equator runs through the very bottom part of the country, so I decided to go on a wild journey to find it, and document every step of the way. Have you ever been to the equator?
**NOTE** -- This video style is a completely new approach for me. It's longer, unscripted and there's no voice over. I would really appreciate if you could give me some feedback on it. What did you like and what did you not like ? Should I do these kind of spontaneous "vlog" videos more often? Or stick to my old style of educational/documentary videos? Thank you so much!

Straddling the Equator, the islands of Sao Tome and Principe form a volcanic archipelago known as “The Islands in the Middle of the World.” Situated off the coast of Gabon and isolated from the rest of the world, this is one of Africa’s smallest countries. The population is a mix of the descendents of slaves and the original Portuguese colonists. In these unspoiled islands, where Nature is so generous, the inhabitants of Sao Tome and Principe enjoy a paradise of jungle, mountain and ocean.
Márcio GONÇALVES has always felt a very close bond with the sea. So, naturally, he has become the guardian of this vital, living element. He works for MARAPA, one of Sao Tome’s first environmental protection NGO’s. Thanks to this organization Marcio has been able to live out his dream of protecting his unspoiled island and the wildlife that live there.
Diamantino VASCONCELOS is a farmer and like most of the islanders, he has a patch of land for his own use in the middle of the forest. There, he harvests the bean that is the symbol and pride of his country: cocoa. Everyone in the neighborhood knows and likes Diamantino thanks to his great talent as a singer and actor…
Maria DO CEU MADUREIRA is Portuguese but she has adopted the island of Principe as her home. She is doing research in ethnopharmacology for the prestigious University of Coimbra in Portugal. She is a specialist in plants and their medicinal uses. Discovering new treatments to relieve and heal people is the goal of Maria’s whole life and why she is tirelessly hikes through the mountains of these islands.

HELLO from São Tomé and Príncipe - my 145th country! It's a tiny Portuguese-speaking island just 200 miles West of Gabon in Central Africa.
This morning, someone at my guesthouse told me that the Equator runs through the very bottom part of the country, so I decided to go on a wild journey to find it, and document every step of the way. Have you ever been to the equator?
**NOTE** -- This video style is a completely new approach for me. It's longer, unscripted and there's no voice over. I would really appreciate if you could give me some feedback on it. Along West Cliff Drive, Natural Bridges State Beach is known for its bridge-shaped rock formation.
