EMOTIONAL EATING | Tomska and Kati Morton
Emotional eating or comfort eating is disordered eating and Tomska and I are talking about it. Many people use food as a way to cope, and if you watched my video with Alexa about trauma therapy, you know that our bodies are wired to be soothed with food. When we are children we are soothed with food, and that is why comfort or emotional eating is so common. *Video on Tom's Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmMByS-lEbISome things that you can do to help yourself is to work with a therapist who specializes in eating disorders, so they can help you figure out why the eating disorder is there in the first place. Hi Kati and Kinions! I hope you are having a great day. So I asked a question during the live stream on Friday, May 27. Kayla: Why do I love being called “my dear/sweetie/honey” by my therapist and teacher? No one in my family does it, so it is special? Thanks so much, Kati for answering me! You were right! I do want that affection. My family life is crap. My parents are abusive and my family hates me. I am a burden to them and my mental illnesses bother them. I have been watching your videos for a few years now. And I am just becoming a member on your site (I was scared to ...

I'm Kati Morton, a licensed therapist making Mental Health videos - Depression, Eating Disorders, Anxiety, Self-Harm and more! Mental health shouldn't have a stigma attached to it. You're worth the fight! Binge eating and how it relates to trauma is what Alexa and I address in today's video. In our last video about grounding techniques, Alexa taught us that since we were born we were wired for connection. We learned this connection through feeding. So the sucking and swallowing that we do when eating actually helps us soothe. Therefore w...

I created this video due to some questions that I received from one of my subscribers. She was wondering how to manage anxiety around food. I know that this is something that all of us struggle with from time to time, and I know that many of us will struggle with this throughout our recovery. I encourage you to leave any feedback about what works for you or things that you have used to help manage this!
The first tip that I want to give is to pick "safer" foods when you know that you will be around people or situations that make you extremely anxi...

Extreme hunger in recovery when we have struggled with a restrictive type of an eating disorder. What that means is that we are eating what is on our meal plan and yet we are still really really hungry! Why? It can be so triggering and cause our ED voice to sneak back in and tell us that we can't keep eating like this and that we will keep gaining weight. Don't listen! Instead watch this video and fight back!Truth is, that our hunger is based on how much damage was done to our body during our eating disorder. This has nothing to do with weight or type of eating disorder. This has everything to do with your body and what it has been put through. So listen to it, because it will tell you what it needs. It is also very common to crave sugars, carbs, and fats when we are in recovery. This is okay because our body just needs easily processed energy to keep it going. It is working overtime and is going to need energy that is can get quickly. We obviously still need to have a well rounded diet, but that's why those cravings are there and it's okay to listen to them. Lastly, no you won't keep gaining weight! Hooray! As crazy as it sounds, if we are eating when we are hungry and stopping when we are full we will only be giving our body what is needs. Wild huh? So you can trust it, HONEST! So do your best to listen to your body and give it what it asks for. Just make sure to check in and know whether that craving or want is coming from your body or your emotions. Also, when we are under weight and are in recovery it is normal to regain most of our weight on our torso. That's because all of our organs are there and our body is trying to keep all its energy close to where it needs to do most of its repairs. This weight will redistribute, we just have to be patient and give it time to heal. I hope this helps! I know many people worry about listening to their body's hunger and fullness cues. But trust me, they only tell you the truth! So listen up!! xoxo BIG THANK YOU to my Patreon Patrons! In order to meet the criteria for binge eating disorder, someone must have recurrent episodes of binge eating. The DSM defines binge eating as 1. Eating in short amount of time an amount of food that is definitely larger than what most people would eat in a similar amount of time and circumstance. 2. A sense of lack of control over eating during the episode.
Then the binge eating episodes are associated with 3 or more of the following:
Eating much more rapidly than normal
Eating until uncomfortably full
Eating large amounts of food when not feeling physically hungry
Eating alone because of feeling embarrassed by how much one is eating
Feeling disgusted with oneself, depressed, or very guilty afterward.
We must also have been distressed about our binge eating, and it must occur at least once a week for 3 months, and the binge eating is not associated with inappropriate compensatory behavior as in bulimia nervosa.
Let’s talk about the cause: Obviously, they don’t know for sure what causes BED, but they do know that there is a genetic component to all EDs, and if someone in our family has had an ED we are 46-72% more likely to have one as well. In my experience, trauma in our past (abuse, frightening event, etc) can lead to unhealthy coping skills such as an ED. I also find that patients of mine who were placed into a body focused activity at a young age are more likely as well. I offer up those triggers or causes because many of my patients have said that they overeat as a way to numb out from a painful memory, or have been overeating as a way to make themselves unattractive (usually as a result of sexual abuse). Or there was so much pressure on them as children to look a certain way that they always felt out of control with food, and once they could make their own choices, they found themselves binging frequently. Also, many people will feel like they are eating to fill a void, and that could be an emotional void that was left by an emotionally absent parent. Be patient. It’s a process, not perfection. You didn’t develop BED overnight so it won’t go away quickly either. And yes when we are doing the hard work on therapy where we are focusing on the true cause of our ED it can get worse at first, but just work at it often, and trust me, it can get better!

Remember that eating disorders are really just coping skills; a way for us to self soothe or numb out and we have to figure out what it is we are numbing out from. Also, set small goals for yourself focused more on finding out why our eating disorder exists rather than dieting. Dieting is never the answer when it comes to binge eating. We have to find other healthy coping skills to replace the ED in order for the urges to eat when we aren't hungry or overeat to go away. By working through the real reason your ED exists (ex: trauma, depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, etc) the need for the ED will slowly go away and the urges will get easier to fight. Know that you are not alone! Binge eating disorder is a real thing and it deserves treatment just like any other eating disorder. If you want more information on binge eating disorder here is my old video on it: https://youtu.be/2pD0pjNCtX4 (don't worry I will do a new one soon) xoxSUBSCRIBE TO TOMS CHANNELS: https://www.youtube.com/user/TomSka

And I am just becoming a member on your site (I was scared to come on here and might bother/burden others). So I means a lot since it was my first time asking a question…Anyways I have a follow up question if that is okay. I don’t want to bombard you with my annoying questions…So my question: How do I get over the fantasy of being cuddled and hugged? I want to hug my therapist. I have hugged her a couple times before and she is fine with it. But I want someone to take care of me, like my therapist/doctor/fictional character from a TV show/even some teacher. How do I stop fantasizing about this? I never act on it, but I think about it all the time. WEBSITE http://www.katimorton.com

Therefore we can use food to soothe ourselves as adults when we feel disregulated or upset. If you struggle with binge eating, Alexa offers up some ways to soothe without using food. One being connection with others. Since that's what it is that we are really seeking by over eating, texting someone we love can help! Also, pulling out your resiliency box (that we talked about in our last video) and watching a video of someone you love. Hearing their voice and seeing their face can soothe us so much more than food can. I hope this is helpful! I know many of you have shared how you struggle with binging, and I hope the tools offered give you some relief from those urges to binge. xoxNew Videos every Monday and Thursday!
The first tip that I want to give is to pick "safer" foods when you know that you will be around people or situations that make you extremely anxious. I know that many dietitians would disagree, but as long as you are following your meal plan, I think that it is appropriate to pick something easier at a time like that. We don't want to set ourselves up for failure when we are working so hard to get better.
The second tip is to monitor your anxiety level. 0 being without any anxiety and 10 being so overwhelming that you could scream. When you anxiety begins to climb, maybe around a 5 or 6, use your tools. Call that friend who is so supportive and knows just what to say to help you feel calm, or put on that relaxing music mix that you have created. Just breathe and take your time, give your body time to calm down and for you to reengage.
The last tip is to talk with people at dinner instead of disassociating. I know it is tempting to shut down, isolate, and just get through the meal, but try to keep engaged. You can use your five senses to keep yourself present. What do you smell or hear? Try to use as many of your sense as you need until you feel yourself in the chair and can engage with those you are eating with. It can also help to have a question that you always ask. Like "how was your day?" or "what are your plans for the weekend?" Asking a question that requires more than a yes or no answer can help you fully engage in conversation. This can work the same way that disassociating does, but you are making friends and building relationships at the same time!
Let me know if these tips work or if you can come up with others that also help. Let's continue our walk together towards a healthy mind and a healthy body.Help us caption & translate this video!http://amara.org/v/BvIp/
