Intramuros (Spanish for "within the walls") is the oldest district and historic core of Manila, Philippines. It is also called the Walled City, it was the original city of Manila and was the seat of government when the Philippines was a component realm of the Spanish Empire. Districts beyond the walls were referred as the extramuros of Manila, the Spanish for "outside the walls".
Construction of the defensive walls was started by Spanish colonial government in the late 16th century to protect the city from foreign invasions. The 0.67-square-kilometre (0.26 sq mi) walled city was originally located along the shores of the Manila Bay, south of the entrance to Pasig River. Guarding the old city is Fort Santiago, its citadel located at the mouth of the river. Land reclamations during the early 20th-century subsequently obscured the walls and fort from the bay.
Intramuros was heavily damaged during the battle to recapture the city from the Japanese Imperial Army during the Second World War. Reconstruction of the walls was started in 1951 when Intramuros was declared a National Historical Monument, which is continued to this day by the Intramuros Administration (IA).

Intramuros is a walled city-fortress originally built by the Spaniards in the 1600's. It is a historical monument, almost completely destroyed in World War II, it has been restored and is a must-see for visitors to the Philippines. Intramuros is rich with history and legend. To learn more about Intramuros visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intramuros. I hope to return to the Philippines in 2015 sometime. At that time, one of my goals is to re-photograph Intramuros with much better equipment and much more time to spend there. It truly is an incredible place. Last June 12 was Independence Day. It was a perfect day to skate and be creative. I decided to shoot a video of Intramuros because this place has so much history in it and to be able to skate in a place like this made me realize how far we've come as Filipinos. The videos that I make is a reminder of the places I have been to, the people I hang out with and the music that I am currently listening to. It feels good to be able to document something like this and I am even more inspired to know that these are the kinds of things that we can always look back at and call it our own history someday. The track that used I on this video was by Gill Scott Heron "The Bottle" (Cookin' Soul Tribute). Such a dope track. "THE REVOLUTION IS BEING TELEVISED" - GILL SCOTT

Modern Manila has spectacular skyscrapers, modern super malls, yet its greatness doesn't come from these modern amenities, it's splendor comes from an older, often forgotten source. Manila's Hidden Hero highlights Intramuros, the city's oldest district, and the hero that sacrificed it all to bring Manila and the Philippines to democracy and independence.
Take a tour of the medieval fortified city. Intramuros, in Philippine colonial history, was the original Manila. The Spaniards first landed here in 1571 and conquered this area, that was once a center of trade for Asian goods. It will take you an entire day, or longer, to discover Intramuros. Intramuros, which means inside the walls, used to be the political, cultural and commercial center of the Spaniards in the East. To ward off invaders, the Spaniards built the wall to protect the area. Intramuros housed Fort Santiago, the headquarters for colonizers from the Spaniards, the Americas, the Japanese, until the Philippine Independence in 1946. The Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was incarcerated in Fort Santiago. And in his prison cell he wrote his famous poem, Mi último Adió...

We see Rizul Park, visit Intramuros, do a bit of shopping and see hundreds of Jeepneys.
One of the best sites to visit when you're in Manila is Intramuros. This is a walled off fortified city built by the Spanish. It is home to the oldest buildings in the Philippines - including the oldest universities and churches. Today, it's primarily a tourist attraction for those who want to dive into a bit of history, and it's also a place where young people attend school or just hang out. A great way to see the entire area is by foot or hitch a ride with a pedicab rider, but make sure you set a price first before hopping on. After the tour was over, I ate a lovely lunch at some place I forgot the name to. Tried some adobo and some beef bone soup called bulalo, which was insanely delicious. ------------------------------------------------- About Me: I'm Kyle Le and I live, travel, a...
