One shot time-lapse video of the entire length of Interstate 90, the longest highway in the United States Interstate system.
Shot over four days in late August, 2011 (departed Boston Logan area 7:35PM EDT Sunday, August 21, arriving Safeco Field, Seattle, 3:48PM PDT Thursday, August 25)
Distance: 3099.07 miles (4,987.46 km)
Approximate driving time: 59 hours, 22 minutes
Ride: 2000 Saab 9-5 Aero, 5sp, new Kuhmo tires, about-to-fail A/C compressor
Average MPG: 30.1
Average cost per gallon (premium): $3.921
Gallons consumed: 179.3
Quarts 0W30 Mobile 1 consumed: 3
Total tolls: Almost $40, we got so angry at having to pay so many we stopped counting...
Camera: Canon PowerShot A470, paid $28 on eBay
Mount: sturdy suction mount, found cheap on eBay
SD card: 4GB
Software: CHDK running ultra intervalometer script
Timing: One shot every ten seconds, no flash
LCD: disabled by inserting headphone jack splitter in A/V output jack
Resolution: 640x480, low resolution (I think 300dpi, but not sure)
Batteries: 8x Duracell Lithium AA, in pairs, lasted about 8.5 hours/pair
When those ran out, we burned through 14 pairs of standard Duracell AA alkalines, only good for 1.5-2 hours/pair
(Yes, we know there's an AC power supply available, but we didn't have time to source it and an AC/DC power inverter in time...next time, definitely...)

Interstate 90
Interstate 90 (I-90) is a transcontinental freeway, and the longest Interstate Highway in the United States at 3,020.54 miles (4,861.09 km). Its western terminus is in Seattle, at Edgar Martinez Drive S. near Safeco Field and CenturyLink Field, and its eastern terminus is in Boston, Massachusetts, at Route 1A near Logan International Airport. I-90 crosses the Continental Divide over Homestake Pass just east of Butte, Montana. East of the Wisconsin-Illinois border, much of I-90 follows several toll roads, many of which predate the Interstate Highway system. The Jane Addams Memorial Tollway, Chicago Skyway, Indiana Toll Road, Ohio Turnpike, New York State Thruway, Massachusetts Turnpike, and the Ted Williams Tunnel are all toll roads used by I-90 in the eastern half of the country. The Interstate is not tolled through some segments in downtown Chicago; Greater Cleveland, and the rest of Northeast Ohio; Pennsylvania; and through brief sections near Buffalo; Albany; and Boston. Erie, Pennsylvania; Billings, Montana; and Spokane, Washington are other major cities on I-90.

Cascade Mountains, WA . In July Cindy and I drove through the Cascade Mountains of Washington on an absolutely gorgeous summer day. Hot, with temperature in the 90's and clear skies, perfect road trip. For anyone looking for a memorable road trip, this is highly recommended. The roads are excellent and Washington State has many cost advantages to it's northern neighbor. Fuel, accommodations and food cost less (just see how many Canadians go cross border shopping) and there are a lot of parks along the way to enjoy the outdoors. In this travel video tour of Portland, Oregon, I travel to Portland, one of the most unique cities in the United States.
I started my trip off by hopping off a plane and then immediately hopping onto a bus. But not just any bus, a bus operated by Brewvana Brewery Tours, the mostly women-run craft beer brewery tour company. Portland, or know as Beervana to some, is home to 55 breweries within its borders, and is truly a beer-lover's paradise. On my tour we made stops at Rogue Ales & Spirits, Laurelwood Pubic House & Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewery and Sidecar Bar, where I had the chance to sit down over a pint with the founder and owner of Brewvana, Ashley Rose Salvitti.
While in Portland, I stayed at the Tiny House Hotel, a hotel made up of, you guessed it, tiny houses. In the next portion of my video guide I give a tour of my "crib" to show what it's like to live and stay in a tiny house.
Then, in an effort to get a chance to experience the famed brunch scene in Portland, I stopped in at The Tin Shed Garden Cafe, located down the street from where I was staying in the New Alberta Arts District.
In the interest of learning more about food, I headed to the downtown location of the Portland Farmers Market, located in a beautiful stretch of downtown Portland. Here, I got a tour of the grounds with Mona Johnson, then had the opportunity to meet up with some of the vendors, including Matt Choi of Choi's Kimchi Company, and famed chef and artisanal pickle impresario, David Barber of Picklopolis and Bingo! Sandwiches.
In need of a little peace and serenity, I then visited the Lan Su Chinese Garden, a peaceful and beautiful oasis in an otherwise busy and hectic part of downtown.
When visiting Portland, there's no reason to spend all your time in the city, especially with so much to do outside the city limits. The next day I took a road trip with local Matthew Domingo to explore the Columbia River Gorge and the numerous trails and waterfalls just off the road you can check out.
Then, to wrap things up, we stopped in at Hood River Organic near the riverside town of Hood River, an organic orchard and farm run by East Coast ex-pat Dan Thall, who gave us a tour of his land. Once the day ended we then headed out to happy hour at Solera Brewery in the imposing shadow of Mount Hood and then into town for a dinner featuring mushroom pizza with mushrooms Dan had grown and recently delivered to the restaurant.

I’m Dan with Holiday Extras Travel Guides, and this time we’re here to help you travel better in Paris.
Coming up we have food, transport, money, some tips from the locals, and a whole lot more!
But first here’s some more about the city!
Paris is one of my favourite places in the whole world. With its grand boulevards, friendly locals, and first class cuisine, this city really has it all!
One of the best bits about Paris is how close it is!
Paris is connected to London by the Eurostar. Trains depart from St Pancras International in London, stop off at Ebbsfleet International, and Ashford International in Kent along the way. Trains start running at 5.40am and run every 60 - 90 minutes until 8.00pm.
You’ll need your passport and ticket ready to pass through airport style security and board the train.
However you can two bags, and there’s no weight restrictions to worry about! There’s an onboard cafe that sells hot food and drinks, and modern trains even have wifi. All in all the journey takes about two and half hours.
The EuroStar arrives at Paris Gare Du Nord, from here you can take the metro or a taxi to your hotel. We’ll have more on the Metro later!
Now if you’re flying in…
There are routes from most airports in the UK, and a flight will take between 1 - 2 hours, you’ll either land in Charles De Gaulle in the North East, or the Smaller Paris Orly in the South.
To get into the city from Charles De Gaulle airport, you can take Line B of the RER, trains take about 35 minutes to Paris Gare Du Nord, where you can find connections to the Metro and other public transport.
From Orly Airport you can connect to Line B of the RER line as well. Although you’ll need to take the Orly Val Shuttle Service from the airport to Antony train station first.
However, both airports are served by Air France’s transfer buses. There are two lines from Charles de Gaulle into the city, one from Paris Orly and a line that connects the two.
As with most cities we recommend getting around on foot, besides being eco-friendly, it’s a great way to get a feel for the city.
But just bear in mind that Paris is big. Like, really big. A walk from the Eiffel Tower to Notre Dame will take about an hour. Fortunately, if you’re strapped for time then there are lots of really good public transport links.
The subway system is split into the Metro and RER lines. Tickets will work across both so you can treat it as one big underground network. In our experience, it served a purpose which was to us around the city quickly. It’s just not the cleanest.
The Metro has 16 lines, each with a different colour while the five RER lines are assigned the letters A, B, C, D and E. RER and Metro trains run every day from 6 am until half past midnight.
As for tickets a single will cost you €1.90, we brought a book of 10 for €14.50. Now there are weekly and monthly passes available, but in my opinion, they’re just a faff! You need a Passport photo, and everything else, so I just say a book of ten is the way forward!

The subway system is split into the Metro and RER lines. Tickets will work across both so you can treat it as one big underground network. In our experience, it served a purpose which was to us around the city quickly. It’s just not the cleanest.
The Metro has 16 lines, each with a different colour while the five RER lines are assigned the letters A, B, C, D and E. RER and Metro trains run every day from 6 am until half past midnight.
As for tickets a single will cost you €1.90, we brought a book of 10 for €14.50. Now there are weekly and monthly passes available, but in my opinion, they’re just a faff! You need a Passport photo, and everything else, so I just say a book of ten is the way forward!

Around 3,000 firefighters in California battled major wildfires after the end of a five-year drought across the state, as it was gripped by a record-breaking heatwave. A wildfire in the Sierra Nevada foothills north of Sacramento was only 2% contained by early yesterday evening and had destroyed 10 homes, scorching 2,000 acres of forest and sparking evacuations and road closures ...
