Herbert Jay Solomon (April 16, 1930 – July 1, 2003), known by his stage name Herbie Mann, was an American jazz flautist and important early practitioner of world music. Early in his career, he also played tenor saxophone and clarinet (including bass clarinet), but Mann was among the first jazz musicians to specialize on the flute. His most popular single was "Hijack", which was a Billboard number-one dance hit for three weeks in 1975.
Mann emphasized the groove approach in his music. Mann felt that from his repertoire, the "epitome of a groove record" was Memphis Underground or Push Push, because the "rhythm section locked all in one perception."
Herbie Mann was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish parents, Harry C. Solomon (May 30, 1902 – May 31, 1980), who was of Russian descent, and Ruth Rose Solomon (née Brecher) (July 4, 1905 – November 11, 2004), who was born in Bukovina, Austria-Hungary but immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of 6. Both of his parents were dancers and singers, as well as dance instructors later in life. He attended Lincoln High School in Brighton Beach. His first professional performance was playing the Catskills resorts at age 15. In the 1950s Mann was primarily a bop flutist, playing in combos with artists such as Phil Woods, occasionally playing bass clarinet, tenor saxophone and solo flute.
Herbie the Love Bug is an anthropomorphic 1963 Volkswagen Beetle, a character that is featured in several Disney motion pictures starting with the 1968 feature film The Love Bug. He has a mind of his own and is capable of driving himself, and is also a serious contender in auto racing competitions. Throughout most of the franchise, Herbie is distinguished by red, white and blue racing stripes from front to back bumper, a racing-style number "53" on the front luggage compartment lid, doors, and engine lid, and a yellow-on-black '63 California license plate with the lettering "OFP 857".
Herbie's origins are firmly established in The Love Bug (1968). He was bought from Peter Thorndyke's showroom by San Francisco socialite Mrs. Van Luit for her upstairs maid, but returned shortly afterwards due to reliability problems, and purchased by race-driver Jim Douglas (Dean Jones), who had earlier stood up for him against the pompous Thorndyke (David Tomlinson). Tennessee Steinmetz (Buddy Hackett), Jim's friend and housemate, names the car "Herbie" after his uncle Herb, a professional boxer whose broken nose greatly resembled the hood of a Volkswagen Beetle.

Jean DuShon (born Anna Jean Harris, 16 August 1935) is an American jazz and R&B singer, and stage actor. She is best known for her recordings in the 1960s, including the first recording of the song "For Once in My Life".
Born in Detroit, she sang in church as a child, and later entered and won local talent contests. She turned professional at 15, and began performing in nightclubs. She was influenced by Dinah Washington, and on one occasion was confronted by an angry Washington who accused her of copying her. She studied at the Detroit Conservatory, and attracted the attention of music business agent John Levy, the manager of singer Nancy Wilson. He won DuShon singing engagements across the US, and after he and Wilson had a row vowed that he would make DuShon a bigger star than she was. However, she then married Freddie Atwell, who became her manager, and they relocated to New York City.
DuShon then joined Cootie Williams' band as featured vocalist, before being spotted by Ahmet Ertegun of Atlantic Records, who paired her with young producer Phil Spector. They recorded a version of Little Willie John's "Talk to Me, Talk to Me" on Atco in 1961, but it was unsuccessful. DuShon then recorded singles with various labels including Lennox, OKeh and Columbia, before joining Chess Records in 1964. There she recorded three albums. The first, Make Way for Jean DuShon, was recorded with the Lou Donaldson quintet and was released on the Argo subsidiary label in 1964. It was followed by You Better Believe Me, with the Ramsey Lewis Trio, in 1965, and finally Feeling Good, again with Donaldson and arranged by Oliver Nelson, on the Cadet label in 1966.
Roy Ayers (born September 10, 1940) is an American funk, soul, and jazz composer and vibraphone player. Ayers began his career as a post-bop jazz artist, releasing several albums with Atlantic Records, before his tenure at Polydor Records beginning in the 1970s, during which he helped pioneer jazz-funk. He is a key figure in the acid jazz movement, which is a mixture of jazz into hip-hop and funk, and has been dubbed by many as "The Godfather of Neo Soul". He is most well known for his signature compositions "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" and "Searchin". and is also famous for having more sampled hits by rappers than any other artist.
Ayers was born in Los Angeles, and grew up in a musical family, where his father played trombone and his mother played piano. At the age of five, he was given his first pair of vibraphone mallets by Lionel Hampton. The area of Los Angeles that Ayers grew up in, now known as "South Central" but then known as "South Park", was the epicenter of the Southern California Black music scene. The schools he attended (Wadsworth Elementary, Nevins Middle School, and Thomas Jefferson High School) were all close to the famed Central Avenue, Los Angeles' equivalent of Harlem's Lenox Avenue and Chicago's State Street. Roy would likely have been exposed to music as it not only emanated from the many nightclubs and bars in the area, but also poured out of many of the homes where the musicians who kept the scene alive lived in and around Central. During high school, Ayers sang in the church choir and fronted a band named The Latin Lyrics, in which he played steel guitar and piano. His high school, Thomas Jefferson High School, produced some of the most talented new musicians, such as Dexter Gordon.

fliped with ''Take a Chance'' issued on Cadet Records in 1967. Biographie Jean DuShon is a superb singer. Early in her career, Dinah Washington scolded her for "trying to sing like me". DuShon quickly developed her own style which was so impressive, her rise to stardom was inevitable. Jean started singing professionally while still in her teens. Like other natives of the city, she entered talent shows, most of which she won, and started getting paid gigs locally. The singer was headlining the Flame Showbar when Berry Gordy was still taking pictures of the patrons and his sister was selling cigarettes. Luck walked through the door when John Levy became her manager. Among his other clients were Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley, George Shearing and Ramsey Lewis. Jean was now being booked...
Vibraphonist Roy Ayers has used the music of the diaspora to entertain listeners for well over 40 years. The Los Angeles native was given a set of mallets by his mentor and hero Lionel Hampton as a teenager. He pursued playing the vibes and was a well seasoned session musician playing with some of the greats like Teddy Wilson to the Herbie Mann. Its was his time with Mann where he became his tour manager and arranger. During the early 1970s Roy created a sound that fused jazz, soul, and eventually dance music that got lots of radio play on FM urban radio formats. Songs like Everybody Love The Sunshine, Running Away, You Send Me, Searching, and Poo Poo La La are staples on the dance floor as well as the bedrooms. Twenty five years later Roys music has been sampled by artists as diverse at M...

Ray Barretto (April 29, 1929 – February 17, 2006) was an American Grammy Award-winning Latin/Latin jazz musician of Puerto Rican ancestry. Early years Barretto (whose surname is really "Barreto"; a mistake at the time Ray's birth certificate was filed gave his last name its formal spelling) was born in New York City. His parents moved to New York from Puerto Rico in the early 1920s, looking for a better life. He was raised in Spanish Harlem and at a very young age was influenced by his mother's love of music and by the jazz music of musicians such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie. In 1946, when Barretto was 17 years old, he joined the Army. While stationed in Germany, Barretto met Belgian vibist Fats Sadi, who was working there. In 1970 Roy Ayers moved from Los Angeles to New York City. He left Herbie Mann’s group and decided to form his own group. Ubiquity was a combination of soul, jazz, and world music influences that had an organic appeal commercially. Ayers also began singing which added to his rich compositions and producing. All in all, he created a sound that was the precursor to disco and offered a mellower version of funk that is hailed today as “Neo-Soul.” Roy’s endless musical boundaries allowed him to score movies like the Pam Grier classic “Coffy,” to romantic ballads like “You Send Me,” “I Wanna Touch You Babe,” and “No Stranger to Love.” Some of the musicians that have played and performed in Ubiquity are Dee Dee Bridgewater, Edwin Birdsong, and Phillip Woo. Roy has recorded with the likes of Fel...

Twenty five years later Roys music has been sampled by artists as diverse at M...
