Pyrenees
The Pyrenees (/ˈpɪrᵻniːz/; Spanish: Pirineos [piɾiˈneos], French: Pyrénées [piʁene], Aragonese: Pirineus, Catalan: Pirineus, Occitan: Pirenèus, Basque: Pirinioak or Auñamendiak) is a range of mountains in southwest Europe that forms a natural border between France and Spain. It separates the Iberian Peninsula from the rest of continental Europe, and extends for about 491 km (305 mi) from the Bay of Biscay (Cap Higuer) to the Mediterranean Sea (Cap de Creus).
For the most part, the main crest forms a massive divider between France and Spain, with the microstate of Andorra sandwiched in between. The Crown of Aragon and the Kingdom of Navarre have historically extended on both sides of the mountain range, with smaller northern portions now in France and larger southern parts now in Spain.
The demonym for the noun "Pyrenees" in English is Pyrenean.
Etymology
In classical mythology, Pyrene is a princess who gave her name to the Pyrenees. The Greek historian Herodotus says Pyrene is the name of a town in Celtic Europe. According to Silius Italicus, she was the virginal daughter of Bebryx, a king in Mediterranean Gaul by whom the hero Hercules was given hospitality during his quest to steal the cattle of Geryon during his famous Labors. Hercules, characteristically drunk and lustful, violates the sacred code of hospitality and rapes his host's daughter. Pyrene gives birth to a serpent and runs away to the woods, afraid that her father will be angry. Alone, she pours out her story to the trees, attracting the attention instead of wild beasts who tear her to pieces.

Great Pyrenees
The Pyrenean Mountain Dog, known as the Great Pyrenees in North America, is a large breed of dog used as a livestock guardian dog. It should not be confused with the Pyrenean Mastiff.
As late as 1874 the breed was not completely standardized in appearance, with two major sub-types recorded, the Western and the Eastern. They are related to several other large white European livestock guardian dogs (LGD), including the Italian Maremma Sheepdog, Kuvasz (Hungary), Akbash Dog (Turkey) and Polish Tatra or Polski Owczarek Podhalański, and somewhat less closely to the Newfoundland and St. Bernard. According to the Great Pyrenees Club of America, the Great Pyrenees is naturally nocturnal and aggressive with any predators that may harm its flock. However, the breed can typically be trusted with small, young, and helpless animals of any kind due to its natural guardian instinct.
The Great Pyrenees breed has experienced a dramatic fall off in the number of U.S. AKC breed registrations from 2000 to 2010. The breed was ranked at #45 in 2000 and by 2010 Great Pyrenees had dropped to #71. In 2013 the breed was ranked #69. Other large breeds in the same working group classification, Newfoundland and St. Bernard, have fared far better in maintaining their breed rankings. In 2010 Newfoundland and St. Bernard were ranked #44 and #45 respectively.

We started off our journey spending the night in Cadaqués waking up the following morning to go on a sailing trip along the Cap de Creus Natural Park on a traditional boat. We started off our journey spending the night in Cadaqués waking up the following morning to go on a sailing trip along the Cap de Creus Natural Park on a traditional boat. We had the opportunity to bask in the sun and eat plenty of local seafood including Fideuà (noodles with seafood) and mussels with Bizcochos Borrachos (drunken Spanish sponge cake) for dessert. In the afternoon we visited La Vinyeta Cellar vineyard to harvest grapes by hand and then crush them with our feet. Afterwards we enjoyed a wine tasting paired with cheese. That evening we did a cooking workshop and a gin and tonic workshop and tasting with Gin Nut staying overnight at La Vall de Bianya.
The following morning had us waking up before the crack of dawn to go on a hot air balloon ride over la Garrotxa where we had a fantastic view of the Pyrenees mountain range. We then transferred to Girona where we had lunch at Celler de Can Roca considered to be the 2nd best restaurant in the world. After relaxing for a bit we took a guided city tour of Girona exploring its wonderful architecture, sampling some gelato and picking out Game of Thrones locations. Our final meal on this trip featured traditional Catalan food at Can Xifra restaurant where I got to drink wine out of a porró and had the best rum and raisin ice cream I've ever tasted in my whole life.

So hey guys, this week we are in Costa Brava, Spain and we're going to be taking you on a bit of a food adventure. Can't wait to eat and travel.
So it is a beautiful day out. We have blue skies and I think that calls for a sailing trip.
So lunch is served and we are having Fideuà on the boat so have a look here. This is a seafood dish and it is made with pasta that is cooked in fish juice and we've also got some prawns.
So next up we're at La Vinyeta and this is a winery and a vineyard so we're going to be drinking some wine and doing a little tour.
So Sam has found a new career here in Costa Brava picking grapes
So I'm going to be stomping some grapes this afternoon in order to do so I need my traditional Catalan hat, Catalan scarf. Now I'm ready to do this and we're going barefoot.
So Sam tell us what are you about to drink? I'm trying the grapes that you stepped on. With my bare feet.
Well, I can't think of a better way to finish off this vineyard tour than with wine, cheese and cold cuts
So tonight we are spending the night in a place called la Ferreria and this hotel is like traveling back in time.
We're taking a hot air balloon ride and it should be amazing. Like this is something we've never done and we really want to try it out. Yeah, so we're going to be flying over the Pyrenees mountains and it should be spectacular. Let's go.
So this afternoon we're doing a bit of a taste test at el Celler de Can Roca and this is the second highest rated restaurant in the whole world. It should be delicious.
So next up we're going to start the appetizer and this is going to take us a journey around the world.
And there is the world.
So this afternoon we're going to do a walking tour of Girona and it looks beautiful. It looks really colorful but first up we need to get ice cream.
Okay, so we finally got our ice cream and apparently there is some kind of Game of Thrones reference here. It is called Ma Daurada and that means the golden hand.
So this bridge was built by Monsieur Eiffel himself before the Eiffel Tower ever came to be.
So that is a wrap from beautiful Costa Brava. I have to say we ate like Kings and Queens while we were here. Yeah, and we got a nice taste of the region in terms of all of the travel activities and things you can do as well. Definitely somewhere we'd like to come back and explore more in-depth. We had the opportunity to bask in the sun and eat plenty of local seafood including Fideuà (noodles with seafood) and mussels with Bizcochos Borrachos (drunken Spanish sponge cake) for dessert. In the afternoon we visited La Vinyeta Cellar vineyard to harvest grapes by hand and then crush them with our feet. Afterwards we enjoyed a wine tasting paired with cheese. That evening we did a cooking workshop and a gin and tonic workshop and tasting with Gin Nut staying overnight at La Vall de Bianya.
The following morning had us waking up before the crack of dawn to go on a hot air balloon ride over la Garrotxa where we had a fantastic view of the Pyrenees mountain range. We then transferred to Girona where we had lunch at Celler de Can Roca considered to be the 2nd best restaurant in the world. After relaxing for a bit we took a guided city tour of Girona exploring its wonderful architecture, sampling some gelato and picking out Game of Thrones locations. Our final meal on this trip featured traditional Catalan food at Can Xifra restaurant where I got to drink wine out of a porró and had the best rum and raisin ice cream I've ever tasted in my whole life.

Costa Brava Travel Guide for Food Lovers (Cadaqués, La Vall de Bianya, Pyrenees & Girona) in Spain Travel Food Video Transcript:
So hey guys, this week we are in Costa Brava, Spain and we're going to be taking you on a bit of a food adventure. Can't wait to eat and travel.
So it is a beautiful day out. We have blue skies and I think that calls for a sailing trip.
So lunch is served and we are having Fideuà on the boat so have a look here. This is a seafood dish and it is made with pasta that is cooked in fish juice and we've also got some prawns.
So next up we're at La Vinyeta and this is a winery and a vineyard so we're going to be drinking some wine and doing a little tour.
So Sam has found a new career here in Costa Brava picking grapes
So I'm going to be stomping some grapes this afternoon in order to do so I need my traditional Catalan hat, Catalan scarf. Now I'm ready to do this and we're going barefoot.
So Sam tell us what are you about to drink? I'm trying the grapes that you stepped on. With my bare feet.
Well, I can't think of a better way to finish off this vineyard tour than with wine, cheese and cold cuts
So tonight we are spending the night in a place called la Ferreria and this hotel is like traveling back in time.
We're taking a hot air balloon ride and it should be amazing. Like this is something we've never done and we really want to try it out. Yeah, so we're going to be flying over the Pyrenees mountains and it should be spectacular. Let's go.
So this afternoon we're doing a bit of a taste test at el Celler de Can Roca and this is the second highest rated restaurant in the whole world. It should be delicious.
So next up we're going to start the appetizer and this is going to take us a journey around the world.
And there is the world.
So this afternoon we're going to do a walking tour of Girona and it looks beautiful. It looks really colorful but first up we need to get ice cream.
Okay, so we finally got our ice cream and apparently there is some kind of Game of Thrones reference here. It is called Ma Daurada and that means the golden hand.
So this bridge was built by Monsieur Eiffel himself before the Eiffel Tower ever came to be.
So that is a wrap from beautiful Costa Brava. I have to say we ate like Kings and Queens while we were here. Yeah, and we got a nice taste of the region in terms of all of the travel activities and things you can do as well. Definitely somewhere we'd like to come back and explore more in-depth. In the National Park of Aigüestortes the Pyrenees touch the sky. You will find 4 peaks that exceed 3000 meters and a dozen that surpass 2800.
The National Park of Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici is one of the fourteen national parks of the Spanish State and the only one in Catalonia. Located in the heart of the Pyrenees, together with the parks of Ordesa and Monte Perdido and the Pyrenees of France, it is an excellent representation of the main ecosystems that we can discover in the high Catalan mountain.
Summits that surpass the three thousand meters of height; Rivers, ravines, waterfalls and swamps that really make us feel the country of water; More than 200 ponds of diverse shapes and colors, and a great diversity of animal and vegetal species that struggle to survive in a rigorous physical environment give life to this protected natural space unique of the south of Europe.
The National Park of Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici offers during the four seasons of the year a program of activities that includes itineraries with guides service, snowshoeing in the winter season, naturalist days, exhibitions, talks and competitions, activities Which aim to make known the main natural values of the National Park of Aigüestortes to improve the protection and conservation of these privileged spaces.
How to visit the Park
The National Park divides its territory between four great regions: Alta Ribagorça, Pallars Sobirà, Pallars Jussà and Valley of Arán. In fact, the park area strictly corresponds to the first two and the peripheral area affects all four. The usual access to the heart of the park is made by the two historical entrances: Espot (Pallars Sobirà) and Boí (Alta Ribagorça).
In these two towns are the centers of reception of the Park, information, basic services, means of transport and diverse tourist offer. In some places you will find informative panels and in others you will find a sign announcing that the entrance in the Park Area.
Reception and information centers
The Houses of the Park are the main centers for information, dissemination, reception and interpretation, and at the same time they are the administrative and coordination centers for the activities of the Aigüestortes National Park. There are two located in Espot and Boí, due to the geographical separation of the main accesses. Both in the center of Espot and in the one of Boí you will find basic documentation, orientation on the conditions of the territory and access.
On the other hand, in the two centers you will find guides that will show and put nature in your hands, both summer and winter. With snowshoeing you can enter the National Park of Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici following some of the suggested itineraries. Other activities that give life to the centers are the exhibitions, the fields of work, the courses and the conferences.

Es muy poco habitual ver fotografías o vídeos de los escasísimos Osos pardos salvajes que habitan la cordillera de los Pirineos. En estas montañas la especie llegó al límite mismo de la extinción, pero la reintroducción en la vertiente francesa en el año 1996-1997 de dos hembras y un macho provenientes de Eslovenia devolvieron la esperanza a la especie.
Durante doce días de trabajo a lo largo de tres semanas en mayo-junio 2010, el equipo formado por el fotógrafo Oriol Alamany con Eulàlia Vicens y el naturalista Marc Alonso logró imágenes inéditas de gran valor documental, donde pueden verse a dos ejemplares distintos de Oso pardo salvaje grabados en plena naturaleza en el Pirineo catalán. En doce días Oriol y Eulàlia pudieron observar a los osos en nueve ocasiones distintas, a veces hasta cinco horas consecutivas, logrando fotografiarlos y grabarlos en seis de ellas. Las imágenes muestran a dos osos jóvenes alimentándose sin cesar de la tierna hierba que en esta época del año recubre los prados de la alta montaña pirenaica.
Este video está grabado en formato Full HD 1080p con una cámara Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, aunque esta copia está reducida a 720p. El equipo jamás se acercó a los osos para no interferir en absoluto con su comportamiento natural, por lo que hubo que recurrir a largas distancias focales de 500 mm con teleconvertidores 2X y 1,4X.

El naturalista y guía de la naturaleza Marc Alonso fue el responsable del seguimiento de los osos reintroducidos durante el Programa LIFE-Oso Pardo. En la actualidad es miembro de la junta directiva de DEPANA y realiza el seguimiento de la población de Oso pardo en el Pirineo catalán por parte de esta ONG conservacionista.

It is very rare to see pictures or videos of the very few wild brown bears that inhabit the Pyrenees mountains in the border between Spain and France. In these mountains the species reached the very edge of extinction, but the reintroduction project into the French side in the years 1996-1997 of two females and one male coming from Slovenia returned hope to the species.
For twelve days of work over three weeks in May-June 2010, the team of photographers Oriol Alamany and Eulalia Vicens working with naturalist Marc Alonso obtained new images of great documentary value, where you can see two different wild Brown Bears recorded in the Catalan Pyrenees. In twelve days Eulàlia and Oriol observed the bears on nine different occasions, sometimes for up to five consecutive hours, making photographs and videos. The images show two young bears constantly eating the tender grass that at this time of year covers the meadows of the high Pyrenees.
This video is recorded in 1080p Full HD with a Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, but this copy is reduced to 720p for viewing purposes. The team never approached the bears for not interfering at all with their natural behaviour, so we had to resort to long focal lengths of 500 mm with 2X and 1.4 X teleconverters.

(You are murderers!) as he passed the summit of the Col du Tourmalet for the very first time, and from that very day a mythical mountain in cycling was born. Now it’s your chance to turn up the volume and conquer the ‘terrible mountain’.

Chris Marker and Edward Saïd are the spiritual influences of 'Logical Revolts', which is introduced by and named after a furious poem by Rimbaud. After having found an old, never realised film script about the Suez crisis in 1956, the filmmaker Henderson travels to Cairo with the film script as his guide. But all of this, however, is told through a friend, who receives his increasingly disillusioned travel diary by mail in the form of film clips, revolutionary slogans and old postcards (whose coloured motifs, as the intangible Henderson puts it, is the most real picture we can have of a place). He feels like a stranger, and he finds it difficult to penetrate what he sees. The gestures and angry looks of the locals are addressed to both his little pocket camera and to us as viewers - but what kind of crime is it that we and the pictures are committing? 'Logical Revolts' is a political, philosophical and literary embrace of history's relationship to post-revolutionary reality in today's Egypt. A disappearing act and a labyrinthine meta-narrative, which with feverish clarity draws the lines between the points to create a single, self-critical image. And on top of it all, it's quite funny.

Mike Cotty and Cyclefilm have teamed up once again to guide you through the 2014 Etape from the picturesque start town of Pau, once described by a French poet as having ‘the world’s most beautiful view of the Earth’ no less, all the way to Hautacam ski station. Join Mike as he shares his advice on preparing yourself and your bike for a long day in the saddle before giving a detailed insight into what can be expected out on the road come July 20th.
148km in total with over 3,000 metres of vertical elevation can never be overlooked, especially when both mountains have a very different character - the Tourmalet is longer at 17.1km and with a more consistent gradient whilst Hautacam starts with a bark and keeps on biting all the way to the top with it’s ever changing pitches (up to 13%) across 13.6km. Are you ready to tackle the highest road pass in the Hautes-Pyrénées followed by its smaller, although arguably more cocky, little brother? To succeed you will need a combination of endurance, strength and power. And you know what they say 'knowledge is power!'

- Synopsis/ Short Script -
For over a thousand years, pilgrims have been making their way on foot to the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela, the resting place of the remains of Saint James. About 2.5 million people a year visit Santiago, over 200,000 of them walking the Camino, a pilgrimage across France and Spain. Traditionally, the Camino de Santiago should begin from the front door of your home. If you happened to live 50 kilometres away from the Cathedral, that was all you walked. If you live in Nottingham, like me, walking from your doorstep would take an inordinate amount of time. But, in fact, plenty of people in Europe do begin from their homes, a few weeks at a time over a number of years. So where did I begin my Camino? In 2013 I walked 116 kilometres from Sarria to Santiago in five days. This Easter, my challenge was to walk 90 kilometres in four days across hills, mountains and rivers from Santiago to Finisterre, The End of the World. Pilgrims from every background are today drawn to the Camino from all over the world. What is common to them all, is that they have left behind all that is familiar to them, in order to wake each day to a new stretch of road.
No two pilgrims are likely to experience or to understand the Camino in exactly the same way. Some will have walked one hundred kilometres, some five hundred, some more than a thousand. It is essential to travel as light as possible, as everything you need is carried on your back whilst walking roughly 20 kilometres each day. As a filmmaker, I had an excessive amount of equipment.
“The Way” is an inspirational film about Tom, a man who decides to walk the Camino after collecting the remains of his adult son, killed in a Pyrenees storm whilst walking the Camino. What Tom doesn’t plan on, is the profound impact the journey will have on his life. In a way, that very film had an impact on my life in that it inspired me to immediately plan to undertake the final aspect of the same journey, knowing that such an adventure would shape me as a human being at an informative stage in my life. There is a well known saying that the Camino begins when you reach the end. What does this mean to me? It is true that days of walking can produce fatigue, loneliness and pain. However, the sense of achievement that you get from completing such a journey is… indescribable. Life is a journey in itself, and I aim walk my life’s journey with the same enthusiastic and gutsy determination as I walked the Camino. Why did I walk the Camino? Well, for that very reason.

On a southern Florida chicken farm, Shilo the Great Pyrenees watches over dozens of free-range hens to make sure they're safe and protected. Per the video description, the farmer says that the Shilo and another dog started watching the hens when they were just one-year-old puppers. The hens at the time were just four-week-old chicks. If you listen closely, you'll hear a little 'ping, ping' in the background ... ....
