The Colorado River is one of the principal rivers of the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico (the other being the Rio Grande). The 1,450-mile (2,330 km) Colorado River drains an expansive, arid watershed that encompasses parts of seven U.S. and two Mexican states. Rising in the central Rocky Mountains in the U.S., the river flows generally southwest across the Colorado Plateau and through the Grand Canyon before reaching Lake Mead on the Arizona–Nevada border, where it turns south toward the international border. After entering Mexico, the Colorado approaches the large Colorado River Delta at the tip of the Gulf of California between Baja California and Sonora.
Known for its dramatic canyons and whitewater rapids, the Colorado is a vital source of water for agricultural and urban areas in the southwestern desert lands of North America. The river and its tributaries are controlled by an extensive system of dams, reservoirs, and aqueducts, which divert 90% of its water in the U.S. alone to furnish irrigation and municipal water supply for almost 40 million people both inside and outside the watershed. The Colorado's large flow and steep gradient are used for generating hydroelectric power, and its major dams regulate peaking power demands in much of the Intermountain West. Intensive water consumption has dried the lower 100 miles (160 km) of the river such that it has not consistently reached the sea since the 1960s.
Colorado (i/kɒləˈrædoʊ/, or /kɒləˈrɑːdoʊ/) (Spanish for "ruddy") is a state in the United States encompassing most of the Southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains. Colorado is part of the Western United States, the Southwestern United States, and the Mountain States. Colorado is the 8th most extensive and the 22nd most populous of the 50 United States. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the population of Colorado was 5,456,574 on July 1, 2015, an increase of 8.50% since the 2010 United States Census.
The state was named for the Colorado River, which Spanish travelers named the Río Colorado for the ruddy (Spanish: colorado) silt the river carried from the mountains. The Territory of Colorado was organized on February 28, 1861, and on August 1, 1876, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed Proclamation 230 admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state. Colorado is nicknamed the "Centennial State" because it became a state 28 days after the centennial of the United States Declaration of Independence.
The Grand Canyon (Hopi: Ongtupqa; Yavapai: Wi:kaʼi:la, Spanish: Gran Cañón) is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in the state of Arizona in the United States. It is contained within and managed by Grand Canyon National Park, the Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, the Hualapai Tribal Nation, the Havasupai people and the Navajo Nation. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.
The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,093 feet or 1,857 meters). Nearly two billion years of Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. While some aspects about the history of incision of the canyon are debated by geologists, several recent studies support the hypothesis that the Colorado River established its course through the area about 5 or 6 million years ago. Since that time, the Colorado River has driven the down-cutting of the tributaries and retreat of the cliffs, simultaneously deepening and widening the canyon.
National Geographic or NatGeo may refer to:
A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water. Small rivers can be referred to using names such as stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. There are no official definitions for the generic term river as applied to geographic features, although in some countries or communities a stream is defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; examples are "run" in some parts of the United States, "burn" in Scotland and northeast England, and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always: the language is vague.
Rivers are part of the hydrological cycle. Water generally collects in a river from precipitation through a drainage basin from surface runoff and other sources such as groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (e.g. from glaciers). Potamology is the scientific study of rivers while limnology is the study of inland waters in general.

The Colorado River is a lifeline in the desert, its water sustaining tens of millions of people in seven states, as well as endangered fish and wildlife. However, demand on the river's water now exceeds its supply, leaving the river so over-tapped that it no longer flows to the sea. (Video by Pete McBride. Flights by Lighthawk, Ecoflight.) Abrahm Lustgarten, a reporter at ProPublica discusses the state of the Colorado river. http://climateone.org/events/killing-colorado
Willow Beach is on the Colorado River approximately 5 miles down stream from the Hoover Dam. This area has been known to house Monster Striped Bass in the past. There have been Stripers caught over 60 pounds but those days are probably long gone. It takes a Striper many years to reach 15 pounds so the big ones are really old. We always catch and release the bigger fish with the hopes of eventually catching a Monster one day. If you plan on fishing this area make sure you have the proper equipment because hooking into a 10-15 pound Striper is not that uncommon. Many fisherman don't expect to catch fish that big so there is an occasional gun shot sound from a line bust. I just started fishing for these Monsters so I'm proud of my personal best striper for now. (4.73 pounds) I plan on upgradi...

Travel video about destination Grand Canyon in the United States of America. Formed at the point where the Colorado River breaks through the mountains of the American West, the 1800 metre deep Grand Canyon is endowed with a wealth of natural forms and shapes which have made it inevitable that it would have a colourful and important role to play within the myths of creation of the region’s indigenous inhabitants. The Native American Indians chose it as their ‘Happy Hunting Grounds’ in which man’s soul lives on after death. Myth and legend tell of how a giant buffalo ripped open the earth with its horns forcing it upwards toward heaven. This is the kingdom of ‘Coyote’, creator of the world, who is answerable only to the God Manitou. The Grand Canyon is fact, fiction, legend and myth…a geograp...
Travel video about destination Grand Canyon in The USA. There are few places on Earth that highlight the power of nature or are as impressive as the truly awesome Grand Canyon. Millions of years ago erosion and the relentless power of the Colorado River created its magnificent landscape and even today the river continues to force its way through the rock, sand and mud of Canyon. The Canyon extends for four hundred kilometres and its width ranges from between six and thirty kilometres. In 1919 the American government designated the region as a protected area. The first to discover the canyons were the Anasazi Indians who settled in the area around a thousand years ago. They hunted for food and also cultivated corn, pumpkins and beans in many of the neighbouring valleys. Even today a small ...

Two friends. 113 days. 1,700 miles. One endangered river. From October 2011 to January 2012, Will Stauffer-Norris and Zak Podmore hiked and paddled from Wyoming's Wind River Mountains to Mexico following the Colorado River system from its farthest inland source to the sea, filming and narrating on the fly. The resulting film, Remains of a River, is an unforgettable story of friendship, adventure and environmental degradation. At turns inspiring and alarming, this will have you laughing, marveling, shaking your head, and maybe planning an adventure of your own.

There’s a war brewing in the American Southwest and once again the Colorado River is sitting on ground zero. Environmental groups are calling for the decommissioning of dams all across the country and the biggest of them all is “Glen Canyon Dam” near the Utah, Arizona boarder. In 1963, five million cubic yards of concrete standing 710 feet tall halted the natural flow of the Colorado River through Glen Canyon. The obstruction created an oasis in the desert with nearly 2000 miles of shoreline but drowned some of the most spectacular canyons in the world. While the intent of Glen Canyon Dam was to create hydro-electric power and preserve water claims for the Upper Colorado River Basin, it has grown into much more.
