Blue Waters is a petascale supercomputer at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. On August 8, 2007, the National Science Board approved a resolution which authorized the National Science Foundation to fund "the acquisition and deployment of the world's most powerful leadership-class supercomputer." The NSF awarded $208 million for the Blue Waters project.

On August 8, 2011, NCSA announced that IBM had terminated its contract to provide hardware for the project, and would refund payments to date.Cray Inc. then was awarded a $188 million contract with the University of Illinois to build the supercomputer for the Blue Waters project; the supercomputer was installed in phases in 2012.

Performance

Blue Waters runs science and engineering code at sustained speeds of at least one petaFLOPS. It has 1.5 PB of memory, 25 PB of disk storage, and up to 500 PB of tape storage. The file system running on this storage will be the Cray Lustre parallel file system, which is capable of terabyte-per-second storage bandwidth. It will be connected with 300 Gbit/s wide area links.

Ernesto Cortázar II

Ernesto Cortazar (1940–2004) was a contemporary classical composer and pianist. He composed background music for more than 75 motion pictures. He also gained recognition by topping the popularity on MP3.com - a leading music-sharing service, popular with independent musicians for promoting their work.

Life and musical career

Ernesto Cortazar II was born in Mexico City in 1940 into a family of composers.

Ernesto's father, Ernesto Cortazar Sr., was an accomplished composer and was named president of the Society of Authors and Composers (SACM - Sociedad de Autores y Compositores de Mexico). Despite being orphaned at age 13, Ernesto continued with his studies by attending a music academy.

He played piano at bars, hotels, conventions and at the same time, studied with Maestro Gustavo César Carreón, one of Mexico's most important and recognized music industry performers. Carreón gave him his first opportunity to compose a song for the movie La Risa de la Ciudad (1963) and it became a smash hit in Latin America and Spain. Ernesto's main musical composition for this film - piano piece titled "River of Dreams" - won the award for Best Background Music for a Latin American Film at The Cartagena Festival. Ernesto went on to compose musical scores for 75 motion pictures.
