Tasmania (/tæzˈmeɪniə/; abbreviated as Tas and known colloquially as "Tassie") is an island state of the Commonwealth of Australia. It is located 240 km (150 mi) to the south of the Australian mainland, separated by Bass Strait. The state encompasses the main island of Tasmania, the 26th-largest island in the world, and the surrounding 334 islands. The state has a population of over 515,000 (as of September 2015), almost half of which resides in the Greater Hobart precinct, which forms the metropolitan area of the state capital and largest city, Hobart.
Tasmania's area is 68,401 km2 (26,410 sq mi), of which the main island covers 64,519 km2 (24,911 sq mi). Tasmania is promoted as a natural state; almost 45% of Tasmania lies in reserves, national parks, and World Heritage Sites and the state was the founding place of the first environmental party in the world. Though an island, due to a mapping error the state shares a land border with Victoria at its northernmost terrestrial point, Boundary Islet, a nature reserve in Bass Strait. The Bishop and Clerk Islets, about 37 km south of Macquarie Island, are the southernmost terrestrial point of the state of Tasmania, and the southernmost internationally recognised land in Australia.
Bruny Island is an island off the south-eastern coast of Tasmania, from which it is separated by the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. Storm Bay is located to the island's northeast. Both the island and the channel are named after French explorer Bruni d'Entrecasteaux. Its traditional Aboriginal name was Lunawanna Allonah, which survives as the name of two island settlements, Alonnah and Lunawanna.
Geologically, Bruny Island is actually two land masses - North Bruny and South Bruny - that are joined by a long, narrow sandy isthmus. Bruny Island has a total length of approximately 100 kilometres. The holiday village of Dennes Point is located in North Bruny, while South Bruny is the site of the towns of Alonnah, Adventure Bay and Lunawanna.
Outside its settlements the island is covered in grazing fields and large tracts of dry eucalyptus forest. Inland forests continue to be logged, but other large sections - mostly along the southeastern coast - are preserved as the South Bruny National Park. While the seaward side of the island features two long beaches - Adventure Bay and Cloudy Bay - it is for the most part extremely rugged, with cliffs of dolerite that are over 200 metres above sea level. Bruny's channel side is far more sheltered and a favourite fishing and recreational boating area for local and interstate visitors. Adventure Bay is located on the eastern side of the isthmus, while Isthmus bay is located on the western side.

Amanda MacKinnon Gaiman Palmer (born April 30, 1976), sometimes known as Amanda Fucking Palmer, is an American singer-songwriter who first rose to prominence as the lead singer, pianist, and lyricist/composer of the duo The Dresden Dolls. She has had a successful solo career, is also one-half of the duo Evelyn Evelyn, and is the lead singer and songwriter of Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra.
Palmer was born Amanda MacKinnon Palmer in New York City's Mount Sinai Hospital, and grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts. She attended Lexington High School, where she was involved in the drama department, and attended Wesleyan University where she was a member of the Eclectic Society. She staged performances based on work by the Legendary Pink Dots, an early influence, and was involved in the Legendary Pink Dots electronic mailing list, Cloud Zero. She then formed the Shadowbox Collective, devoted to street theatre and putting on theatrical shows (such as the 2002 play, Hotel Blanc, which she directed). Another early influence is Judy Blume, an author of children books.
A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.

Mount Wellington rises straight out of the city to more than 1200 metres. It's possible-- in just a little over half an hour - to drive from a city centre restaurant to a wilderness where you could freeze to death. Even in summer ...

Earlier in 2012 I spent some time in Tasmania with a good friend of mine. I’d like to share a little of our Tasmanian adventure. To inspire you. Exploring the outdoors is something I really enjoy. There is always a secret place, a creek, a field, a place of magic hiding away from the tourist route. Places that are not on the top 10 things to do. Places not so well travelled. Driving around the most direct roads, the highways, was something I wanted to avoid where possible. I wanted to see the ‘backcountry’. To get up early with the sun and go exploring. Like the explorers of old… discovering. We made many impulse turns down random dirt roads, pulling onto the kerbside, squeezing our bodies through barbed-wire fences to find unusual places. Chasing the glimpse of something special you cau...

When people think of Australia they think: white sandy beaches, hot sun, and turquoise water. Tasmania is the untamed, wilder and more rugged part of this country. In late September of this year we spent a few days in Tasmania working for James Boag alongside a bunch of really nice people, following chef James Viles whilst he harnessed and foraged for wild and raw ingredients from around the region This is a glimpse of our adventure, where we experienced the wild Tasmanian weather, warm camp fires with new friends, as well as some spectacular sunrises and sunsets. http://www.expedia.com/Hobart.d6052485.Destination-Travel-Guides When you first arrive in Hobart, you may not be aware that you’re exploring a former prison. This onetime penal colony is located between Mount Wellington and Port Hobart, and features a number of exquisite colonial buildings in breathtaking natural surroundings. There’s a variety of things to do within the city, so chow down on seafood from a waterfront restaurant before stopping by one of the galleries built into old whale oil warehouses. Don’t forget to check out the Hobart Theatre, a must-see on any Hobart tour. This structure was built by convicts brought to Australia in the 19th century, and it still hosts live performances today. Though we only touched briefly, it was deeply
So many thoughts from afar, every day in my mind
With your beaches and berries and streams, you always float into my dreams
With the twin peaks of your mountain, the days till I get there I’m counting
But to me it would seem, like a daydream, a daydream
I’ll cross that ocean between, in a daydream, a daydream
With your older world charm, you’re like a shot in my arm
You’re so wise and naive, you make me want to believe
But to me it would seem, like a daydream, a daydream
I’ll cross that ocean between, in a daydream
Like a daydream
Red sun over the green, in my memory
So many thoughts from afar, every day in my mind
And I’ll always keep trying, if I thought my dreams of you were dying
But to me it would seem, like a daydream, a daydream
I’ll cross that ocean between, in a daydream, in a daydream
