Mind

A mind /ˈmaɪnd/ is the set of cognitive faculties that enables consciousness, perception, thinking, judgement, and memory—a characteristic of humans, but which also may apply to other life forms.

A lengthy tradition of inquiries in philosophy, religion, psychology and cognitive science has sought to develop an understanding of what a mind is and what its distinguishing properties are. The main question regarding the nature of mind is its relation to the physical brain and nervous system – a question which is often framed as the mind–body problem, which considers whether mind is somehow separate from physical existence (dualism and idealism), or the mind is identical with the brain or some activity of the brain, deriving from and/or reducible to physical phenomena such as neuronal activity (physicalism). Another question concerns which types of beings are capable of having minds, for example whether mind is exclusive to humans, possessed also by some or all animals, by all living things, or whether mind can also be a property of some types of man-made machines.

Dean Radin

Dean Radin (/ˈreɪdɪn/; born February 29, 1952) is a researcher and author in the field of parapsychology.

He has been Senior Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), in Petaluma, California, USA, since 2001, and is on the Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Psychology at Sonoma State University, on the Distinguished Consulting Faculty at Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center, and former President of the Parapsychological Association. He is also co-editor-in-chief of the journal Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing.

Radin's ideas and work have been criticized by scientists and philosophers skeptical of paranormal claims. In addition, the review of Radin's first book, The Conscious Universe, that appeared in Nature charged that Radin ignored the known hoaxes in the field, made statistical errors and ignored plausible non-paranormal explanations for parapsychological data.

Early life

Professionally, Radin worked as a concert violinist for five years, later switching to engineering after earning an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, as well as both a master's degree in electrical engineering and a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Spira Mirabilis (orchestra)

Spira Mirabilis is a European classical symphony orchestra founded in 2007 and based in the town of Formigine in Italy. Their name means Marvelous Spiral which is the name the 17th-century Swiss mathematician Jacob Bernoulli, gave the mathematical curve (present under many guises in nature) called logarithmic spiral because of the property of self-similarity of that curve.

As of May 2013, the orchestra is composed of 42 musicians, mostly from European countries (Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Italy, Germany, Sweden, France, Switzerland, Spain, Slovakia, Slovenia) but also, for a few of them, from non-European countries (United States, Australia, New Zealand, Colombia, Panama).

Spira Mirabilis perform orchestral repertoire but also chamber music and they play part of their repertoire on period instruments. They are also distinguished, among other things, by the fact that they work out interpretations, rehearse them and perform them collectively without a conductor and so implement a model of music making which breaks to some extent with prevailing patterns.

Quantum entanglement

Quantum entanglement is a physical phenomenon that occurs when pairs or groups of particles are generated or interact in ways such that the quantum state of each particle cannot be described independently — instead, a quantum state may be given for the system as a whole.

Measurements of physical properties such as position, momentum, spin, polarization, etc., performed on entangled particles are found to be appropriately correlated. For example, if a pair of particles is generated in such a way that their total spin is known to be zero, and one particle is found to have clockwise spin on a certain axis, then the spin of the other particle, measured on the same axis, will be found to be counterclockwise; because of the nature of quantum measurement. However, this behavior gives rise to paradoxical effects: any measurement of a property of a particle can be seen as acting on that particle (e.g., by collapsing a number of superposed states); and in the case of entangled particles, such action must be on the entangled system as a whole. It thus appears that one particle of an entangled pair "knows" what measurement has been performed on the other, and with what outcome, even though there is no known means for such information to be communicated between the particles, which at the time of measurement may be separated by arbitrarily large distances.
