Light rail

Light rail or light rail transit (LRT) is urban public transport using rolling stock similar to a tramway, but operating at a higher capacity, and often on an exclusive right-of-way.

There is no standard definition, but in the United States, where the terminology was devised in the 1970s (from the engineering term light railway), light rail operates primarily along exclusive rights-of-way and uses either individual tramcars or multiple units coupled to form a train.

A few light rail networks tend to have characteristics closer to rapid transit or even commuter rail; some of these heavier rapid transit-like systems are referred to as light metros. Other light rail networks are tram-like in nature and partially operate on streets. Light rail systems are found throughout the world, on all inhabited continents. They have been especially popular in recent years due to their lower capital costs and increased reliability compared to heavy rail systems.

Definition

The term light rail was coined in 1972 by the U.S. Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA; the precursor to the Federal Transit Administration) to describe new streetcar transformations that were taking place in Europe and the United States. In Germany the term Stadtbahn (to be distinguished from S-Bahn, which stands for Stadtschnellbahn) was used to describe the concept, and many in the UMTA wanted to adopt the direct translation, which is city rail (the Norwegian term, bybane, means the same). However, the UMTA finally adopted the term light rail instead.Light in this context is used in the sense of "intended for light loads and fast movement", rather than referring to physical weight. The infrastructure investment is also usually lighter than would be found for a heavy rail system.

Rapid Rail

Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd (styled as rapidrail) was established to place all three rail operators for Sistem Transit Aliran Ringan Sdn Bhd (STAR-LRT) previously operate and currently known as Ampang Line, Projek Usahasama Transit Ringan Automatik Sdn Bhd (PUTRA-LRT) for Kelana Jaya Line and KL Starrail Sdn Bhd on KL Monorail – under one administrating umbrella in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Rapid Rail network contains two light metro lines comprising the Ampang and Kelana Jaya Lines, with the KL Monorail line being the other major component of the network.

These rapid transit systems were run under the brand name of "Rapid KL". Along with the KTM Komuter lines, owned and operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad, and the Express Rail Link airport lines, this system constitutes the entire public rail network of Kuala Lumpur. The network comprises 60 stations with 72 kilometres (45 mi) of route among the three lines. The two LRT Lines operate on standard gauge (1,435 mm (4 ft 8 ¹⁄₂ in)) rail, while the KL Monorail operates on an ALWEG straddle beam. Train services operate from 6.00 a.m and typically end before midnight daily, with frequencies varying from approximately three minutes during peak hours to fourteen minutes during non-peak hours.

Kelana Jaya

Kelana Jaya is a neighbourhood of Petaling Jaya city, in the state of Selangor, Malaysia, comprising sections SS3, SS4, SS5, SS6, and SS7. The Damansara-Puchong Expressway cuts through this neighbourhood. The shopping mall Paradigm Mall is located here.

The current Member of Parliament representing the constituent is Wong Chen from People's Justice Party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR)).

Kelana Jaya has a wealth of recreational facilities. One major attraction in Kelana Jaya is the Kelana Jaya Lake Park in SS7. Many people from other areas of Petaling Jaya and neighbouring Subang Jaya come to this park on weekends to unwind and relax among the greenery. Fishing in the largest lake is also popular. Next to the park is a collection of community recreational facilities such as a public swimming pool and courts for badminton, futsal, hockey, and tennis. The 20,000-seater Petaling Jaya Stadium is also located near the park. The Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor Sports Complex is very popular and is a little further down the expressway from the lake park.

Ampang Line

The Ampang LRT (Malay: LRT Ampang), is a light rapid transit (LRT) system network in Klang Valley operated by Rapid Rail, a subsidiary of Prasarana Malaysia.

Stations

The Ampang LRT consists of two service lines with a total length of 34.4 kilometres that begin at two different stations to the south and east of the city, meeting at an interchange station, continuing through the city centre and ending at the same station at the north. The Ampang Line begins at Ampang, while the Sri Petaling Line begins at Sri Petaling. Both lines converge at Chan Sow Lin; the line leads to the north, both terminating at Sentul Timur. The Ampang to Sultan Ismail section was the first phase of the LRT system to open, on 16 December 1995, with the second stretch from Chan Sow Lin to Sri Petaling operational on 11 July 1998, primarily for accessibility to the National Sports Complex during the 1998 Commonwealth Games via the Bukit Jalil station. The section between Sultan Ismail and Sentul Timur opened on 6 December 1998.The passenger seating capacity is 168 seats per train (without wheelchair).
