A serious injury to captain Wendy Frew has taken some of the gloss off the Southern Steel's Super Club victory on Friday night.

The Steel capped off a remarkable 2017 season on Friday night when they beat the Northern Mystics in the final of the Super Club tournament in Nelson.

It took the Steel's record to 21 games, 21 wins.

However, Frew had to be helped from the court during the final after falling and it was later revealed she had ruptured her Achilles.

"That was a devastating blow for her and as a team," Southern Steel coach Reinga Bloxham said.

"For her to have come off in the final and then find out she had ruptured her Achilles, it took the shine off the final quite a lot.

"Our hearts were all feeling for her and we were just absolutely gutted it happened."

The injury means she will not get to push for Silver Ferns selection after recently being selected in a 25-strong trial squad.

"She had played so well all season and deserved to have another shot at the Silver Ferns.

"So I think that added to the devastation knowing that her shot at the Silver Ferns this year has been taken away from her."

It has added to what has been a dramatic season for Frew after she required surgery following a team van crash.

She had 70 stitches inserted and made a rapid recovery to return an play in the ANZ Premiership final.

Frew returned to Invercargill on Saturday and will be assessed in the coming days to come up with a recovery plan.
