Invercargill meth dealer pleads guilty

An Invercargill meth dealer has admitted selling drugs, despite initially telling police she only supplied her friends by giving it to them.

Mereana Loana Taia, 36, appeared before Judge Bernadette Farnan in the Invercargill District Court via audio-visual-link on Friday.

She admitted seven drug charges, including representative charges of offering to supply methamphetamine and cannabis, offering to supply LSD and cannabis oil, a representative charge of possessing methamphetamine for supply, possessing LSD for supply, and possessing cannabis for sale.

She also admitted breaching her bail.

Nine further charges were withdrawn.

Taia will be sentenced on July 21.

A police summary of facts says on November 13, two police officers went to an Invercargill property to speak to a person living there on an unrelated matter.

They entered the property and walked past a car parked in the driveway in which a woman was asleep in the front passenger seat.

Police spoke to the person living at the house and when they were leaving checked on the welfare of the woman in the car.

When they approached the car, they saw the woman was holding a methamphetamine pipe.

The police undertook a search, and identified the woman as Taia.

They found a zip lock bag containing cannabis, a tab of LSD, and numerous bags containing trace amounts of a crystal substance which tested positive for methamphetamine.

They also found $1678.80 cash in Taia's wallet, which included 23 $50 notes and five $100 notes, a cellphone, and two SIM cards.

Police then obtained phone records for the phone and two SIM cards.

On analysis of the records, police found a significant amount of drug dealing activity between October 2016 and November 2016, the summary says.

On October 30, a group message was sent to eight different cellphone numbers which said "weigh available whoever is keen for a feed", which the summary says is code that Taia had methamphetamine for people who wanted to buy it.

Between October 31 and November 11, Taia sent text messages offering cannabis by using the terms "you want native", or, "you want green", the summary says.

On November 3, a person messaged Taia asking if she had any $50 cannabis bags for sale, to which Taia replied she didn't, but she offered them a "$50 gold oil cap", which the summary says is in reference to cannabis oil.

The summary says that between October 29 and November 9, Taia was messaged by people wanting to buy methamphetamine.

"The methamphetamine is referred to as 'qs', 'queens', 'half', 'points', and 'lady's' which are common names used for different quantities of methamphetamine," the summary says.

The charge of possessing cannabis for sale related to text messages Taia received between November 10 and 13, asking her if she had "any green", or "native" and she indicated she did and arranged to meet.

It also related to the cannabis found at the time of her arrest.

On November 10, Taia sent a text message to a person asking them if they wanted to "score", and the conversation led to Taia confirming she can get acid (LSD) for $40, the summary says.

When spoken to by police, Taia said she had supplied friends with methamphetamine by giving it to them and the money was from gambling wins on pokie machines.

She acknowledged she was in possession of LSD, but said she was not sure what it was, and said the cannabis was for personal use.
