All about Mercury, the Liquid Metal | Element Series
In this video, I'll be talking about the very interesting element Mercury. I try to cover as much as I can, including its properties, its history and interesting reactions.
Let me know what other element you would like to see. Keep in mind that this takes a lot of work though, and that not all elements will be possible (due to rarity and/or danger).
Let me know if I forgot anything in the description. I probably left out links or something.

The Mysteries of Mercury
http://facebook.com/ScienceReason ... Mercury has always been something of a puzzle for planetary scientists. Its close position to the Sun means it is very difficult to observe, but now a series of satellites is getting up close to this fascinating planet. The European Space Agency's BepiColombo mission is among them, and it will offer an unprecedented level of information about the mysterious world of Mercury. It's a missing piece in our understanding of the evolution of our solar system - but a piece that presently doesn't seem to fit the jigsaw.

Mercury - god of Thieves and Trickery - Roman mythology
Please watch: "Phobos: Fear Personified - Greek and Roman Mythology"

Mercury god of thieves and trickery. Mercury is a major god in Roman religion and mythology, Mercury is the god of financial gain, commerce, eloquence (and thus poetry) messages, communication (including divination) travelers, boundaries, luck, trickery and thieves; he also serves as the guide of souls to the underworld. He was considered the son of Maia, who was a daughter of the Titan Atlas, and Jupiter in Roman mythology. He was the "keeper of boundaries" referring to his role as bridge between the upper and lower worlds. In his earliest forms, Mercury appears to have been related to the Etruscan deity Turms; both gods share characteristics with the Greek god Hermes. M...

Mercury has no moons or rings-
This makes it very different from just about every other planet in our Solar System, with the exception of Venus, which also has no natural satilettes. In the early 1970s, astronomers thought that it might of had a moon. Instruments on board NASA’s Mariner 10 spacecraft detected large amounts of ultraviolet radiation that some astronomers thought was radiation coming from a celestrial body orbiting mercury. It was later discoved that what was detected was actually a distant star, leavely mercruy a loney planet.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mercury has water ice on its surface-
The idea of water ice being discovered on Mercurys surface may sound surprisings, given that it is the closet planet to the sun. But it has been detected using Earth-based radar imaging and confirmed by NASAs Messenger space craft. The only locations on the surface where this is possible seems to be near the poles, where the floors of some craters might be deep enough to permanently shade the ice. Scientists beleive that the ice got there either by meteorite bombardment or planetary outgassing.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mercury has more craters and impact marks than any other planet-
Mercury is very similar to the Moon, in that it is covered in deep crators that scare its surface. Unlike most planets it isn’t geologically active and does not have much of an atmosphere.
This means that craters can be preserved though time without being errodded away like most of the old craters on earth. The largest crater or Basin on Mercury, is the Caloris Basin, which is around 960 miles in diameter and was discovered by NASAs Mariner 10.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mercury Owns the biggest man made crater in space-
In 2014 NASAs messenger probe ran out of fuel after orbiting Mercury for around 4 years. Becuase the probe could no longer correct its course, NASA used the crafts last reserves of helium gas coolant to steer the Messenger out of orbit and on a collision course with Mercury's surface. It began to get closer to the planet and rapidly pick up speed.Eventually in april 2015 the the
messenger probe smashed in to the surface of Mercury at a speed of 8750mph, creating a 50ft wide crater. This explosive Scar is the biggest man made crator anywhere in the universe, thats not on
Earth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mercury is the least explored planet-
As 2015 Mercury is the least explored inner planet within our solar system. So far only the Mariner 10 and MESSENGER missions have been sent to make close observations of the planet. In 1973, Mariner 10 was launched by NASA to make multiple flyby encounters of Venus and Mercury. Mariner 10 provided the first detailed data of Mercury, mapping 40-45% of the surface. Then more than 30 years later the messenger space craft was sent, its instruments yielded significant data, including a characterization of Mercury's magnetic field and the confirmation of water ice at the
planet's north pole plus much more. The next mission to Mercury will be launched in 2017 and is consisting of two satelites, each desineged for a distinct purpose.

Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, remains somewhat of a mystery to us. In the past, because of its proximity to the sun, it has been difficult for Earth based telescopes to observe Mercury against the ferocious solar light.
To increase our understanding of this mysterious planet Europe will launch in 2015 BepiColombo, the first dedicated mission to Mercury that should reach its destination in 2022. Its observations of Mercury should also offer new insights into the workings of extra-solar planets in other solar systems.
These planets, which like Mercury are formed in very close proximity to their parent star the sun, are a hot topic in planetary science and astronomy at the moment.
This ESA Video recalls the questions raised around Mercury and explains what BepiColombo will do with interviews of Alvaro Gimenez Canete, ESA Director of Science and Robotic Exploration and Johannes Benkhoff, ESA BepiColombo Project Scientist.
---
Mercury was first studied by the Mariner 10 mission in 1974 and since 2011 by the NASA probe 'Messenger'. Mapping the surface in detail; Messanger has picked up signs of ancient volcanoes and of a cooling inner layer. Yet so much remains to be discovered.
To increase our understanding of this mysterious planet; in 2015 Europe will launch BepiColombo, the first dedicated mission to Mercury.
Construction and testing of the spacecraft is well underway at the European Space Agency's Research and Technology Centre in the Netherlands. The project is a joint mission with the Japanese and the spacecraft is divided into two probes, each with the job of studying different aspects of Mercury to gain a more complete picture.
In the past because of its proximity to the sun its been difficult for Earth based telescopes to observe Mercury against the ferocious solar light. What we do know, points to a forbidding world, pockmarked with craters.
Mercury also follows an odd elliptical orbit, on the one hand passing within 47 million kilometres of the Sun and then swinging out to 70 million kilometres. Another Mercurial paradox is the contrast between the speed of its orbit around the sun and its slow rotation around its own axis. On Mercury, days can last longer than years, with one day lasting up to 176 Earth days ... and a year only 88 Earth days.
Bepi Colombo should reach its destination in 2022 after a long and difficult journey avoiding the gravitational grasp of the sun as it passes. Having arrives its observations of Mercury should offer new insights into the workings of extra-solar planets in other solar systems. These planets, which like Mercury are formed in very close proximity to their parent star the sun, are a hot topic in planetary science and astronomy at the moment.
What happened to Mercury? Why is it so dense? And how did its orbit evolve? BepiColombo, by finding answers to some of these questions, could deliver some really revealing insights into how our solar system formed 4.5 billion years ago.

Mercury is often depicted holding the caduceus in his left hand. Similar to his Greek equivalent Hermes, he was awarded the caduceus by Apollo who handed him a magic wand, which later turned into the caduceus. Mercury did not appear among the numinous di indigetes of early Roman religion. Rather, he subsumed the earlier, Dei Lucrii, as Roman religion was syncretized with Greek religion during the time of the Roman Republic, starting around the 4th century BC. From the beginning, Mercury had essentially the same aspects as Hermes, wearing winged shoes and a winged hat, and carrying the caduceus, a herald's staff with two entwined snakes that was Apollo's gift to Hermes. Mercury was often accompanied by a cockerel, herald of the new day, a ram or goat, and a tortoise, referring to Mercury's legendary invention of the lyre from a tortoise shell. There is so much more information on this channel about Mercury/Hermes/Thoth they are known by many names in many myths and legends all of which can be found here at mythology explored by ANCIENT MYSTERY on youtube.

Mercury's climate could not be more diverse: one side is boiling hot and the other side is dark and frozen. The question is how ice can exist on a planet this close to the sun and how it got there. Maybe Mercury's mysterious climate can even tell us something about climate on Earth!
