Yankee Stadium is a stadium, used mainly for baseball and soccer, located in The Bronx, New York City. It is the home ballpark for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB) and the home stadium for New York City FC of Major League Soccer (MLS). The $2.3 billion stadium, built with $1.2 billion in public subsidies, replaced the original Yankee Stadium. It is one block north of the original, on the 24-acre former site of Macombs Dam Park; the 8-acre site of the original stadium is now a public park called Heritage Field. The first game at the new Yankee Stadium was a preseason exhibition game against the Chicago Cubs on April 3, 2009; the Yankees won, 7–4. The first regular-season game was played on April 16, a 10–2 Yankee loss to the Cleveland Indians.
The stadium incorporates replicas of some design elements from the original Yankee Stadium. Although stadium construction began in August 2006, the project spanned many years and faced many controversies, including the high public cost and the loss of public parkland. The overall price tag makes the new Yankee Stadium the most expensive stadium ever built.
National Geographic or NatGeo may refer to:
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.
The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City, New York, that competes in Major League Baseball (MLB). The Yankees are a member of MLB's American League (AL) East division. The Yankees are one of two Major League clubs based in New York, the other being the New York Mets.
The club began play in the AL in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (not to be confused with the modern Baltimore Orioles.) Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise (which had ceased operations) and moved it to New York City, renaming the club as the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed as the "Yankees" in 1913.
The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of George Steinbrenner, who purchased the team in 1973. Former catcher Joe Girardi is the team's manager, and Brian Cashman is the team's general manager. The team's home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 2009, they moved into a new ballpark of the same name after the previous venue closed. The team is perennially among the leaders in MLB attendance—in 2011, the Yankees had the second-highest attendance.
The term "Yankee" and its contracted form "Yank" have several interrelated meanings, all referring to people from the United States. Its various senses depend on the scope of context. Most broadly:
The informal British and Irish English "Yank" is especially popular among Britons and Australians and sometimes carries pejorative overtones. The Southern American English "Yankee" is typically uncontracted and at least mildly pejorative, although less vehemently so as time passes from the American Civil War.
June 7, 2016 was a weird day for me at Yankee Stadium. Normally I get most of my balls here by catching home runs during batting practice, but at this particular game, I got lots of toss-ups from the Angels, including Albert Pujols and Mike Trout. And Jered Weaver. And Jhoulys Chacin and coach Dino Ebel. For more details about this game, read my blog entry about it: http://zackhample.mlblogs.com/2016/07/13/6716-at-yankee-stadium/ Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe!
This was the only time I brought my video camera to the old Yankee Stadium. I didn't snag many baseballs, but had fun wandering around, catching up with familiar faces, and seeing Darryl Strawberry have an epic day at the plate. When editing this video (20 years after the fact), I added some commentary to help guide you through my tour of this magical building. Thanks for watching!
It's been five years since legendary Yankee Stadium was demolished after serving as home to the New York Yankees for 85 years. National Geographic was there throughout the demolition process. This clip includes a condensed version of the piece-by-piece destruction. Authorities could not "blow up" the stadium because of its close proximity to residences and active rail lines. The full demolition took over a year. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. This appears to be the longest homerun ever hit in the new Yankee Stadium. Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees launches a titanic blast over the back row of the left field bleachers in the Bronx. The game was played against the Orioles from June 11, 2017. The Yankees stomped the O's 14-3 and swept the series. Enjoy the call by Yes Network announcers Michael Kay and Paul O'Neill. Those in the longest home run ever conversation with 500+ foot homers are Manny Ramirez, Glenallen Hill, Cecil Fielder, Richie Sexson, Adam Dunn, Mo Vaughn, Mike Piazza, Jim Thome, Mark McGwire, Darryl Strawberry, Andres Galarraga, Dave Kingman, Reggie Jackson, and Jose Canseco (supposedly 540 ft). Canseco on many websites is credited with the longest home run in the modern era of MLB. When you get some ti...
