Roosevelt Island is a narrow island in New York City's East River. It lies between Manhattan Island to its west and the borough of Queens on Long Island to its east, and is part of the borough of Manhattan. Running from the equivalent of East 46th to 85th Streets on Manhattan Island, it is about 2 miles (3.2 km) long, with a maximum width of 800 feet (240 m), and a total area of 147 acres (0.59 km2). Together with Mill Rock, Roosevelt Island constitutes Manhattan's Census Tract 238, which has a land area of 0.279 sq mi (0.72 km2), and had a population of 9,520, as of the 2000 United States Census. The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation estimated its population was about 12,000 in 2007.
The island was called Minnehanonck by the Lenape and Varkens Eylandt (Hog Island) by New Netherlanders, and during the colonial era and later as Blackwell's Island. It was known as Welfare Island when it was used principally for hospitals, from 1921 to 1971. It was re-named Roosevelt Island in 1971 after Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The Roosevelt Island Tramway is an aerial tramway in New York City that spans the East River and connects Roosevelt Island to the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Prior to the completion of the Mississippi Aerial River Transit in May 1984 and the Portland Aerial Tram in December 2006, it was the only commuter aerial tramway in North America.
Over 26 million passengers have used the tram since it began operation in 1976. Each cabin has a capacity of up to 110 people and makes approximately 115 trips per day. The tram moves at about 17.9 mph (28.8 km/h) and travels 3,100 feet (940 m) in 3 minutes. At its peak it climbs to 250 feet (76 m) above the East River as it follows its route on the north side of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, providing views of the East Side of Midtown Manhattan. Two cabins make the run at fifteen-minute intervals from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. (3:30 a.m. on weekends) and continuously during rush hours. It is one of the few forms of mass transit in New York City not run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, but uses that system's MetroCard and has free transfers to that system.
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.
New York—often called New York City or the City of New York to distinguish it from the State of New York, of which it is a part—is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York metropolitan area, the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States and one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of New York State. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898. With a census-estimated 2014 population of 8,491,079 distributed over a land area of just 305 square miles (790 km2), New York is the most densely populated major city in the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. By 2014 census estimates, the New York City metropolitan region remains by a significant margin the most populous in the United States, as defined by both the Metropolitan Statistical Area (20.1 million residents) and the Combined Statistical Area (23.6 million residents). In 2013, the MSA produced a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of nearly US$1.39 trillion, while in 2012, the CSA generated a GMP of over US$1.55 trillion, both ranking first nationally by a wide margin and behind the GDP of only twelve and eleven countries, respectively.
York City Football Club is a professional association football club based in the city of York, North Yorkshire, England. The team compete in League Two, the fourth tier of league football in England, as of the 2015–16 season.
First founded in 1908, the club played seven seasons in non-League football before folding in 1917. A new club was formed in 1922, and played in the Midland League for seven years before joining the Football League. They played in the third tier until 1959, when they were promoted for the first time. York achieved their best run in the FA Cup in 1954–55, when they met Newcastle United in the semi-final. They fluctuated between the Third and Fourth Divisions, before spending two seasons in the Second Division in the 1970s. York first played at Wembley Stadium in 1993, when they won the Third Division play-off final. At the end of 2003–04 they lost their Football League status after being relegated from the Third Division. The 2011–12 FA Trophy was the first national knockout competition won by York, and they returned into the Football League that season.

On the 8th of February 2016 I was wandering through the streets of Manhattan in search for this awesome tramway connection. The tourists are quite familiar with everything New York City has to offer and we can think of attractions such as: Central Park, Ground Zero, Empire State Building, China Town, Little Italy, 5th Avenue, the wonderful rooftop bars or the nightlife at the meatpacking district. However as you guys can see in this aerial tram from Roosevelt Island to New York City during the night you'll have one of the best, if not the best, views you can have of this wonderful city that never sleeps. Too bad for the reflection on the mirror, but needless to say it looks awesome! P.S. obviously I do not own the copyright to Frank Sinatra’s – New York theme, however this makes the trip ...

This is video I shot during several visits to Roosevelt in New York City. Roosevelt Island sits between the East Side of Manhattan and the borough of Queens. Some of the highlights on this video: it starts with a ride across the East River on the Roosevelt Island tram, which parallels the 59th Street Bridge (also known as the Queensboro Bridge). There's also video of Franklin Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park, located at the southern tip of the island, and Lighthouse Park, which sits at the northern tip of the island. You get some great views of the Upper East Side of Manhattan, the UN, and the Empire State Building. There's also the Hell Gate area of the East River, where there's some really rough water in a spot where the incoming tide from the Atlantic crashes into the river's southward fl...
Check out the TOP 5 THINGS TO DO on ROOSEVELT Island! Part of Manhattan, technically, Roosevelt Island has long felt lost, under the shadow of the Erector-Set Queensboro Bridge in New York's East River. It was once Blackwell's Island, then Welfare Island, has been home to insane asylums and prisons, then hospital out-patients and UN workers. A tram then subway only reached the island in the mid '70s. And it's kinda weird. The slightly drab, uniform housing (for the most part, there are new condos that glimmer more) feels like an improved version of a Stalinist housing block. In a good way, I mean. Things are changing. Roosevelt Island has always offered nice riverside walks without crowds, good looks to Manhattan's Upper East Side. Last year a $25 million renovation of the famed tram – ...

The lighthouse, after which the park is named, sits at the northernmost tip of Roosevelt Island, which is in the middle of the East River between Manhattan;s East Side and the west side of Queens Borough. The views of the East Side and the East River from Lighthouse Park are spectacular. You can watch tons of river traffic going by on both side of the island, and you have a g...
