Toubkal or Tubkal (Berber: ⵜⵓⴱⴽⴰⵍ, Tubkal, or ⵜⵓⴱⵇⴰⵍ, Tubqal; Arabic: توبقال) is a mountain peak in southwestern Morocco, located in the Toubkal National Park. At 4,167 metres (13,671 ft), it is the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains and in North Africa. It is an ultra prominent peak located 63 km south of the city of Marrakesh, and is a popular destination for climbers.
The first ascent by Europeans was on 12 June 1923 by the Marquis de Segonzac, Vincent Berger and Hubert Dolbeau, but the mountain may have been climbed before that date.
Trekkers usually approach the mountain from the road-end village of Imlil. Qualified guides can be hired, as well as porters, to carry equipment and food supplies higher into the mountains. For experienced mountaineers, guides are not required for the normal route, as it is a moderate hike and orientation is not a problem.
The normal route starts with an easy walk to the village of Aroumd. Past Aroumd a floodplain is crossed and the route follows the left slope of the valley southwards. The valley bends to the east to the tiny settlement of Sidi Chamharouch, which has grown around a Muslim shrine. At Sidi Chamharouch, the path leads over the stream and runs steeply uphill to the right side of the Isougouane valley, which leads to two stone-built refuges (old Neltner Refuge and new Refuge du Toubkal) that are often used as base camp at 3,207 m (10,522 ft). It is possible to buy good meals in the Refuge du Toubkal. Tents can be pitched near the refuges for a small charge.
The Atlas Mountains is a mountain range which stretches across northwestern Africa extending about 2,500 km (1,600 mi) through Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. The highest peak is Jebel Toubkal, with an elevation of 4,167 metres (13,671 ft) in southwestern Morocco. The Atlas ranges separate the Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines from the Sahara Desert. The population of the Atlas Mountains is mainly Berbers. The terms for 'mountain' in some Berber languages are adrar and adras, believed to be cognate with the toponym.
The mountains are home to a number of plant and animal species unique in Africa, often more like those of Europe; many of them are endangered and some have already gone extinct. Examples include the Barbary macaque, the Atlas bear (Africa's only species of bear; now extinct), the Barbary leopard, the Barbary stag, Barbary sheep, the Barbary lion (extinct in the wild), the Atlas Mountain badger, the North African elephant (extinct), the North African aurochs (extinct), Cuvier's gazelle, the Northern bald ibis, dippers, the Atlas mountain viper, the Atlas cedar, the European black pine, and the Algerian oak.
During the tail end of the summer adventuring season, we took a trip to Morocco to climb Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. Standing at a formidable 4,167 meters, its height is eclipsed only by Kilimanjaro among all mountains in Africa, making it the 2nd highest peak on the continent. Join us on day 1 of our trek as we start out from the village of Imlil and head deep into the heart of the Atlas Mountains, making for the Refuge du Toubkal.
An amazing weekend in the Atlas Mountains, the goal being to summit Jebel Toubkal, highest peak in the Atlas range and indeed the whole of North Africa, starting off with a day in Marrakech before travelling to Imlil at the foot of the mountain range on the second day and beginning the trek up to Neltner Refuge, which is at an altitude of 3207 metres. An early start was needed on the third day in order to succesfully summit before the heat became too much. After reaching the top of Toubkal, 4167 metres, and enjoying the amazing views for a while it was time to head back to Imlil and then on to Marrakech once more. Temperatures throughout were in excess of 40 degrees, reaching 44 at one point, with even the nights being 20 plus. There were still some snow patches above 3500 metres at which ...

Jebel Toubkal is the highest peak in Morocco and the highest peak in all of Northern Africa, at 4,167m. We hiked independently from the small town of Imlil to the summit of Jebel Toubkal over two days in the High Atlas Mountains in challenging conditions. On our first day hiking Jebel Toubkal, we had pretty good weather with just a few showers. The path was very straightforward to follow and we made it to the Jebel Toubkal Refuge in the late afternoon without issue. Walking through the valleys, passing waterfalls, taking in the stunning views, we shared the path with a few other hikers and mules carrying packs of supplies to the Jebel Toubkal Refuge where we would spend the night. The weather in the High Atlas Mountains, and in particular on Jebel Toubkal itself, is very changeable and d...
