Freiburg im Breisgau (German pronunciation: [ˈfʁaɪ̯bʊʁk ʔɪm ˈbʁaɪ̯sɡaʊ̯]; Alemannic: Friburg im Brisgau [ˈfʁiːb̥əɡ̊]; French: Fribourg-en-Brisgau) is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany with a population of about 220,000. In the south-west of the country, it straddles the Dreisam river, at the foot of the Schlossberg. Historically, the city has acted as the hub of the Breisgau region on the western edge of the Black Forest in the Upper Rhine Plain. A famous old German university town, and archiepiscopal seat, Freiburg was incorporated in the early twelfth century and developed into a major commercial, intellectual, and ecclesiastical center of the upper Rhine region. The city is known for its medieval minster and Renaissance university, as well as for its high standard of living and advanced environmental practices. The city is situated in the heart of the major Baden wine-growing region and serves as the primary tourist entry point to the scenic beauty of the Black Forest. According to meteorological statistics, the city is the sunniest and warmest in Germany and held the all-time German temperature record of 40.2 °C (104.4 °F) from 2003 to 2015.
The Black Forest (German: Schwarzwald, pronounced [ˈʃvaʁt͡svalt]) is a large forested mountain range in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. It is bounded by the Rhine valley to the west and south. Its highest peak is the Feldberg with an elevation of 1,493 metres (4,898 ft). The region is almost rectangular in shape with a length of 160 km (99 mi) and breadth of up to 60 km (37 mi).
The Black Forest stretches from the High Rhine in the south to the Kraichgau in the north. In the west it is bounded by the Upper Rhine Plain (which, from a natural region perspective, also includes the low chain of foothills); in the east it transitions to the Gäu, Baar and hill country west of the Klettgau. The Black Forest is the highest part of the South German Scarplands and much of it is densely wooded. It is composed of rocks of the crystalline basement and Bunter Sandstone and its natural boundary with the surrounding landscapes is formed by the emergence of muschelkalk, which is absent from the Black Forest bedrock. Thanks to the fertility of the soil which is dependent on the underlying rock, this line is both a vegetation boundary as well as the border between the Altsiedelland ("old settlement land") and the Black Forest, which was not permanently settled until the High Middle Ages. From north to south the Black Forest extends for over 150 kilometres, attaining a width of up to 50 kilometres in the south, and up to 30 kilometres in the north.Tectonically the range forms a lifted fault block, which rises prominently in the west from the Upper Rhine Plain, whilst seen from the east it has the appearance of a heavily forested plateau.
Freiburg in the heart of the Black Forest has a reputation for its high quality of life. It's among the sunniest cities in Germany, and with its picturesque old town and fabulous local cuisine it's a real treat for visitors, too. For more go to http://www.dw.de/program/discover-germany/s-7856-9798
A day of photography in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/brendanvanson --- The Tripod ball head I bought: http://amzn.to/2qDMV1b Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/brendanvanson Facebook: http://www.fb.com/thetravelwriter The town of Freiburg is on the edge of the Black Forest. I came here in hopes of finding a cool little town with the potential for some locations to photograph that would be both city and nature. I have a lot more time here in town than most would take. But, the goal, when I'm not on assignments right now, is to slow travel a bit more; Freiburg seemed like the perfect place to do that. I'm glad I chose Freiburg, too. This little German city is really cool. It's a bit of a university town, so the vibe is great. Lots of youth, lots of fun, ...

Freiburg im Breisgau is situated in the heart of a major wine-growing region. Because of its scenic beauty, relatively warm and sunny climate, and easy access to the scenic beauty of the Black Forest, Freiburg is a hub for regional tourism. At the centre of the old city is the Münsterplatz or Cathedral Square, Freiburg's largest square. A farmers market is held here every day except Sundays. This is the site of Freiburg's Münster, a gothic minster cathedral constructed of red sandstone, built between 1200 and 1530 and noted for its towering spire. The city has an unusual system of gutters (called Freiburg Bächle) that run throughout its centre. These Bächle, once used to provide water to fight fires and feed livestock, are constantly flowing with water diverted from the Dreisam. During t...

Freiburg is a well known city in the southwest of Germany nearby to France and Switzerland. It is the location of the famous Albert-Lud...
A driving tour of the Black Forest in southern Germany, firstly staying at Titisee in the south, from where we visit Triberg and it's waterfalls, Waldkirch and the city of Freiburg. We then visit the nearby Lake Schluchsee, Altglashutten, Lenzkirch and Loffingen. Travelling north, we then pass through St Margen, St Peter and Haslach, before reaching our second base in the north of the Forest at Durbach. From here we visit the towns of Offenburg, Hausach, and Villingen, and the lovely villages of Gengenbach and Schiltach.
We aren't having much luck with the weather today. It is really rainy here in Freiburg. It is Easter weekend but we are out an exploring and we want to show you the city. Let's go have a tour. One of my first impressions of Freiburg is that it is such a great city to walk around in. That's all we've been doing so far. It's very picturesque. There are cobbled streets and it is also very historic.
