Frans Hals’s Portrait of a Preacher (ca. 1660): Virtuosity and the Rough Style

Frans Hals usually painted life-size portraits, but he also made a number of tiny likenesses. Among the loans from the Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo collection is a painting hardly bigger than a sheet of paper, in which Hals’s celebrated brushwork, loose and suggestive, is scaled down to breathtaking effect. It is a masterpiece of virtuosity and intensity. In this lecture, Walsh surveys the careers of Hals and his competitors.

Frans Hals: A collection of 164 paintings (HD)
Description: "Frans Hals was probably born in Antwerp. It is likely that his parents were among the Protestants who fled from Catholic Flanders to the northern Netherlands after the Spanish took Antwerp in 1585. The earliest evidence of the presence of the Hals family in Haarlem is the record of the baptism in 1591 of Frans's brother, Dirck Hals, who also became a painter.
Between 1600 and 1603 Hals was a pupil of the Haarlem mannerist painter Karel van Mander. In 1610 Hals became a member of the Haarlem painters' guild. His earliest surviving dated portrait, of Jacobus Zaffius, is dated 1611. There must have been earlier works that either have not come down to us or have not yet been identified. Some scholars now accept the Banquet in a Park, destroyed in World War II, as a work by Hals painted about 1610, on the basis of the free brushstroke that characterizes his work."
Some 250 paintings by Hals still exist, of which almost 200 are portraits. Except for two pictures representing the Evangelists St. Luke and St. Matthew, the rest are genre subjects, mostly portraitlike single figures, almost all in half or three-quarter length.

McCarthy were a British indie pop band, formed in Barking, Essex, England in 1984 by schoolmates Malcolm Eden (voice and guitar) and Tim Gane (lead guitar) with John Williamson (bass guitar) and Gary Baker (drums).[1] Lætitia Sadier would later join the band on vocals on their third studio album Banking, Violence and the Inner Life Today.[2]
They mixed a sweetly melodic style, dominated by Gane's 12-string guitar playing, with Eden's overtly political lyrics, often satirical in tone, which reflected the band's far left leanings.[3]

Frans Hals
Frans Hals the Elder (/hɑːls/;Dutch: [ɦɑls]; c. 1582 – 26 August 1666) was a Dutch Golden Age portrait painter who lived and worked in Haarlem. He is notable for his loose painterly brushwork, and he helped introduce this lively style of painting into Dutch art. Hals played an important role in the evolution of 17th-century group portraiture.
Biography
Hals was born in 1582 or 1583 in Antwerp as the son of cloth merchant Franchois Fransz Hals van Mechelen (c.1542–1610) and his second wife Adriaentje van Geertenryck. Like many, Hals' parents fled during the Fall of Antwerp (1584–1585) from the Spanish Netherlands to Haarlem, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Hals studied under Flemish émigré Karel van Mander, whose Mannerist influence, however, is barely noticeable in Hals' work.
In 1610, Hals became a member of the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke, and he started to earn money as an art restorer for the city council. He worked on their large art collection that Karel van Mander had described in his Schilderboeck ("Painter's Book") published in Haarlem in 1604. The most notable of these were the works of Geertgen tot Sint Jans, Jan van Scorel, and Jan Mostaert that hung in the St. Janskerk in Haarlem. The restoration work was paid for by the city of Haarlem, since all Catholic religious art had been confiscated after the satisfactie van Haarlem had been reversed in 1578, which had formerly given Catholics equal rights to Protestants. However, the entire collection of paintings was not formally possessed by the city council until 1625, after the city fathers had decided which paintings were suitable for the city hall. The remaining art that was considered too "Roman Catholic" was sold to Cornelis Claesz van Wieringen, a fellow guild member, on the condition that he remove it from the city. It was in this cultural context that Hals began his career in portraiture, since the market had disappeared for religious themes.

Frans Hals Museum
The Frans Hals Museum is a hofje that is home to the municipal museum in Haarlem, Netherlands, that was established in 1862. In 1950, the museum was split in two locations when the collection of modern art was moved to the Museum De Hallen. The main collection, including its famous 17th-century Frans Hals paintings, for which the museum is named, is located in the former Oude Mannenhuis on the Groot Heiligland.
The museum was originally founded in 1862 in the newly renovated former Dominican church cloisters located in the back of the Haarlem city hall known as the Prinsenhof, and when it needed more space, it moved to the recently vacated location of the town orphanage in 1913. The collection is based on the large number of paintings owned by the City of Haarlem, which includes over 100 artworks seized from Catholic churches in the 1580s after the Protestant Reformation, but also interesting Haarlem art rescued from demolished local buildings from the 15th century onwards.

Barbara Visser
Barbara Visser (born August 16, 1977 in Šibenik, Croatia) is a Dutch politician. As a member of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie) she has been an MP since September 20, 2012.
Visser worked at the Ministry of Finance. From 2006 to 2010, she was a municipal councillor of, and also from 2010 to 2012, an alderman of Zaanstad.

Description: "Frans Hals was probably born in Antwerp. It is likely that his parents were among the Protestants who fled from Catholic Flanders to the northern Netherlands after the Spanish took Antwerp in 1585. The earliest evidence of the presence of the Hals family in Haarlem is the record of the baptism in 1591 of Frans's brother, Dirck Hals, who also became a painter.
Between 1600 and 1603 Hals was a pupil of the Haarlem mannerist painter Karel van Mander. In 1610 Hals became a member of the Haarlem painters' guild. His earliest surviving dated portrait, of Jacobus Zaffius, is dated 1611. There must have been earlier works that either have not come down to us or have not yet been identified. Some scholars now accept the Banquet in a Park, destroyed in World War II, as a work by Hals painted about 1610, on the basis of the free brushstroke that characterizes his work."
Some 250 paintings by Hals still exist, of which almost 200 are portraits. Except for two pictures representing the Evangelists St. Luke and St. Matthew, the rest are genre subjects, mostly portraitlike single figures, almost all in half or three-quarter length.

McCarthy were a British indie pop band, formed in Barking, Essex, England in 1984 by schoolmates Malcolm Eden (voice and guitar) and Tim Gane (lead guitar) with John Williamson (bass guitar) and Gary Baker (drums).[1] Lætitia Sadier would later join the band on vocals on their third studio album Banking, Violence and the Inner Life Today.[2]
They mixed a sweetly melodic style, dominated by Gane's 12-string guitar playing, with Eden's overtly political lyrics, often satirical in tone, which reflected the band's far left leanings.[3]

Tentoonstelling 'Emoties - Geschilderde gevoelens in de Gouden Eeuw' met werken van o.a. Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Pieter Lastman en natuurlijk Frans Hals. Part of the “Science and Society: Frontiers of the Mind” initiative, a joint project with the Laboratory of Behavioral and Cognitive Neurology at Stanford University Medical School and the Hamid and Christina Moghadam Program in Iranian Studies.
For centuries, the question of good and evil and their origin has been the subject of intense debate and inquiry among philosophers, theologians, and scientists. In recent decades evolutionary biology has provided alternative empirical explanations for the evolution of morality. Frans De Waal a world renowned primatologist, discusses the biological underpinnings of fairness and empathy in non-human mammals in his interview with Josef Parvizi and Abbas Milani. In his work with monkeys, apes, and other mammals, Frans De Waal has confirmed that the sense of empathy in animals ranges from a core mechanism of emotional linkage to higher levels of perspective-taking and targeted helping. He proposes that the sense of goodness is at the core of our biology and not solely dependent on any ideology or theology. In countries like Iran, where state ideologies try to dictate a unitary view of morality, scientific discoveries like those by Frans De Waal find particular relevance.

Amsterdam is a city known for a variety of sometimes notorious things. From women standing behind windows in their underwear in full view of the general public for the purpose of offering their body for carnal pleassure to the endless presence of coffeeshops surrounded by the odour of maruiana, Amsterdam has it all.
But besides these things Amsterdam is also know for its historic significance. The Van Gogh museum contains important works of the worldfamous painter Vincent van Gogh and the Rijksmuseum, containing 8.000 objects of art and history, from their total collection of 1 million objects from the years 1200–2000, among which are some masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Johannes Vermeer.
But perhaps more importantly, it is only like twenty minutes driving from my home and so a perfect place to go continue testing my new camere the Sony PMW-EX1 :)…..
And so that is what I did. After shooting my neighbourhood I felt I wanted to shoot something a little bigger and more sensational. I guess a big city such as Amsterdam suffices. From the famous canals to the infamous coffeeshops, all are captured in a short little interview approperiatly called “I amsterdam” (after the slogan it uses, particularly for tourists).
Shooting a city went a little less smooth then I suspected. Stubbornly disinclined to take the metro I ended up walking almost 6 days long for most of the day. Exchausted as I was I was really not appreciative of the fact that my tripod broke down on me during the period of shooting. I basically ended up using things like ducktape to keep the whole thing from falling apart and after the final shot was taken immediately afterwards the entire thing just completely broke down to the point where it had no function anymore.
In the end I am still pretty satisfied with the results. It has become a nice little video displaying most of the important things of Amsterdam. From the Stadthuis to the canals, all are in here. The only thing I dislike is the fact that 30FPS gives a dissatisfying result during panning shots. I have learned know to get a camera that can shoot 60FPS whenever I am going to do a shot like that.
Oww yeah… I forgot. I am in the video somewhere. Let’s see if you can spot me!

Frans Hals usually painted life-size portraits, but he also made a number of tiny likenesses. Among the loans from the Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo collection is a painting hardly bigger than a sheet of paper, in which Hals’s celebrated brushwork, loose and suggestive, is scaled down to breathtaking effect. It is a masterpiece of virtuosity and intensity. In this lecture, Walsh surveys the careers of Hals and his competitors.

Description: "Frans Hals was probably born in Antwerp. It is likely that his parents were among the Protestants who fled from Catholic Flanders to the northern Netherlands after the Spanish took Antwerp in 1585. The earliest evidence of the presence of the Hals family in Haarlem is the record of the baptism in 1591 of Frans's brother, Dirck Hals, who also became a painter.
Between 1600 and 1603 Hals was a pupil of the Haarlem mannerist painter Karel van Mander. In 1610 Hals became a member of the Haarlem painters' guild. His earliest surviving dated portrait, of Jacobus Zaffius, is dated 1611. There must have been earlier works that either have not come down to us or have not yet been identified. Some scholars now accept the Banquet in a Park, destroyed in World War II, as a work by Hals painted about 1610, on the basis of the free brushstroke that characterizes his work."
Some 250 paintings by Hals still exist, of which almost 200 are portraits. Except for two pictures representing the Evangelists St. Luke and St. Matthew, the rest are genre subjects, mostly portraitlike single figures, almost all in half or three-quarter length.

The Frick Collection is the final American venue of a global tour of paintings from the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis in The Hague, the Netherlands. While the prestigious Dutch museum undergoes an extensive two-year renovation, it is lending masterpieces that have not traveled in nearly thirty years. At the Frick, a selection of fifteen paintings includes the beloved Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665) by Johannes Vermeer and Carel Fabritius’s exquisite Goldfinch (1654). The exhibition continues the Frick’s tradition of presenting masterpieces from acclaimed museums not easily accessible to the New York public.
Girl with a Pearl Earring is the sole work on view in the Oval Room, with the other paintings shown together in the East Gallery. To accompany the exhibition, three works by Vermeer in the permanent collection, Officer and Laughing Girl (c. 1657), Girl Interrupted at Her Music (c. 1658–59), and Mistress and Maid (c. 1666–67), are grouped together in the West Gallery, where they can be viewed along with complementary Frick Collection paintings by the represented artists.
The fifteen carefully chosen highlights from the Mauritshuis — portraits, landscapes, genre scenes, and still lifes — demonstrate the themes that stirred artists’ and collectors’ imaginations during the Dutch Golden Age. In addition to Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Goldfinch, these include Rembrandt’s Simeon’s Song of Praise (1631), “Tronie” of a Man with a Feathered Beret (c. 1635), Susanna (1636), and Portrait of an Elderly Man (1667); Frans Hals’s pendant portraits Jacob Olycan (1596–1638) and Aletta Hanemans (1606–1653), both painted in 1625; Pieter Claesz’s Vanitas Still Life (1630); Nicholas Maes’s Old Lacemaker (c. 1655); Gerard ter Borch’s Woman Writing a Letter (c. 1655); Jan Steen’s Girl Eating Oysters (c. 1658–60) and “As the Old Sing, So Pipe the Young” (c. 1665); Jacob van Ruisdael’s View of Haarlem with Bleaching Grounds (c. 1670–75); and Adriaen Coorte’s Still Life with Five Apricots (1704).
The exhibition in New York ― accompanied by a catalogue and a series of public programs and select evening hours ― is coordinated by Margaret Iacono, Assistant Curator at the Frick. Frans-Willem Korsten (1959) is verbonden als professor aan de Universiteit Leiden en als bijzonder Hoogleraar Literatuur en Maatschappij aan de Erasmus Universiteit. Sinds 2013 is hij tevens lector aan de Willem De Kooning Academie.
Barbara Visser (1966) is beeldend kunstenaar. Haar werk is onder andere opgenomen in de collectie van het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, het Museum voor Moderne Kunst in Arnhem, het Gemeentemuseum in Den Haag, het Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem en Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
‘Wat heeft de maatschappij hier nu aan?’ Met deze vraag worden kunstenaars en wetenschappers steeds vaker geconfronteerd. Kunsten en wetenschappen hebben in de loop van de afgelopen eeuwen een steeds autonomere positie verworven, maar momenteel lijkt er een kentering gaande. Zo krijgen de wetenschappen de opdracht zich meer te richten op maatschappelijk belangwekkende vraagstukken en van de kunsten wordt gevraagd dat zij hun maatschappelijke relevantie aantonen. Tegelijk valt op dat kunsten en wetenschappen tegenwoordig steeds vaker
samenwerken.
In deze reeks gaan gerenommeerde kunstenaars en wetenschappers met elkaar in gesprek (in het Nederlands). Wat is de relatie tussen kunst en wetenschap? Hoe zien ze hun maatschappelijke rol? Wat zijn de drijfveren van wetenschappers en kunstenaars en wat is de rol van creativiteit? Hoe belangrijk is ruimte om te falen? Wat is de waarde van fundamenteel onderzoek en van autonome kunst? Hoe staat het ervoor met artistieke vrijheid en de vrijheid van wetenschap? Deze en andere vragen vormen de leidraad in deze serie ontmoetingen, waarin we reflecteren op de maatschappelijke rol van beide werelden en hun wederzijdse relatie.

Frans-Willem Korsten (1959) is verbonden als professor aan de Universiteit Leiden en als bijzonder Hoogleraar Literatuur en Maatschappij aan de Erasmus Universiteit. Sinds 2013 is hij tevens lector aan de Willem De Kooning Academie.
Barbara Visser (1966) is beeldend kunstenaar. Haar werk is onder andere opgenomen in de collectie van het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, het Museum voor Moderne Kunst in Arnhem, het Gemeentemuseum in Den Haag, het Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem en Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
‘Wat heeft de maatschappij hier nu aan?’ Met deze vraag worden kunstenaars en wetenschappers steeds vaker geconfronteerd. Kunsten en wetenschappen hebben in de loop van de afgelopen eeuwen een steeds autonomere positie verworven, maar momenteel lijkt er een kentering gaande. Zo krijgen de wetenschappen de opdracht zich meer te richten op maatschappelijk belangwekkende vraagstukken en van de kunsten wordt gevraagd dat zij hun maatschappelijke relevantie aantonen. Tegelijk valt op dat kunsten en wetenschappen tegenwoordig steeds vaker
samenwerken.
In deze reeks gaan gerenommeerde kunstenaars en wetenschappers met elkaar in gesprek (in het Nederlands). Wat is de relatie tussen kunst en wetenschap? Hoe zien ze hun maatschappelijke rol? Wat zijn de drijfveren van wetenschappers en kunstenaars en wat is de rol van creativiteit? Hoe belangrijk is ruimte om te falen? Wat is de waarde van fundamenteel onderzoek en van autonome kunst? Hoe staat het ervoor met artistieke vrijheid en de vrijheid van wetenschap? Deze en andere vragen vormen de leidraad in deze serie ontmoetingen, waarin we reflecteren op de maatschappelijke rol van beide werelden en hun wederzijdse relatie.

Isabelle Bonzom views painting as a living body and art as an experience. She discusses her research on the artistic approach, from her dual perspective as a painter and a scholar. She talks about creativity, art in progress and art in process, knowledge, education, savoir-faire, experience and experimentation. She draws on her own experience. She examines how Modern artists such as Matisse understood those aspects of a life engaged in art. She particularly focuses on the exhibit in Philadelphia entitled " Dive Deep: Eric Fischl and the Process of Painting". After the lecture, she comments about Hals, Cezanne and Picasso.
Isabelle Bonzom is a painter born in France. Her work has been exhibited in museums, art centers, galleries since 1987. After earning a doctorate in art and art history, she pursued post doctorate studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts of Paris, focusing there on fresco and art philosophy. She completed her studies in art history at the Sorbonne. In 2010, she authored a reference book about buon fresco, "La fresque, art et technique". Isabelle Bonzom has given lectures at various prestigious institutions, among them are the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. At the New York Academy of Art in 2010, her lecture "Off with their heads!" about the fragmentation of body and image through the study of the characters of Judith and Salome was a success.

Frans Hals--Masters Series Lecture
A remarkable portrait by 17th--century Dutch artist Frans Hals went on public view Oct. 13 at the Toledo Museum of Art following a Masters Series presentation by one of the world's leading experts on the artist and his work. Pieter Biesboer, curator emeritus of the Frans Hals Museum in The Netherlands, spoke at 6p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in the Museum's Peristyle. The audience was invited to view the Museum's newly acquired painting by Hals, "Van Campen Family Portrait in a Landscape", in the Great Gallery following the presentation.

Jan Koetsier (14 August 1911 in Amsterdam -- 28 April 2006 in Munich) was a Dutch composer and conductor. In 1950, Koetsier became the first Kapellmeister of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. As a composer, he wrote chamber music, and orchestral and choral works, as well as the opera Frans Hals. Pieter Biesboer, curator emeritus of the Frans Hals Museum in The Netherlands, spoke at 6p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in the Museum's Peristyle. The audience was invited to view the Museum's newly acquired painting by Hals, "Van Campen Family Portrait in a Landscape", in the Great Gallery

In 1950, Koetsier became the first Kapellmeister of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. As a composer, he wrote chamber music, and orchestral and choral works, as well as the opera Frans Hals. From 1966 to 1976, he taught conducting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München.Symphony No.1 dates from 1945 but was revised in 1968.
