In "1944" Director Elmo Nyuganena portrays the real events on the Eastern Front in Estonia in 1944, from the Battle Of Tannenburg Line, the July fighting on the Sinimäed Hills, until November, when the Sorve peninsula was already conquered by the Soviet Army. The war is shown through the eyes of participants in the events on both warring sides - the Estonians who fought on the side of the German Army in the 20th Estonian division Waffen-SS, and as part of the 8th Estonian Rifle Corps of the Soviet Army. For residents of Estonia it was a war in which everyone makes their own choices. It is with such hard choices facing the main characters of the film - the soldiers of the opposing sides Carl Tammik and Urey Jogi - as well as their comrades, relatives, friends and even strangers.

Dangerous Passage
Dangerous Passage is a 1944 American film directed by William Berke, starring Robert Lowery and Phyllis Brooks.
Plot Summary
Oil company employee Joe Beck (Robert Lowery) is stationed in the jungle in Honduras. When his grandfather back in Texas dies, he inherits $200,000. In a nearby port he meets with the testament executor, attorney Daniel Bergstrom (Charles Arnt) to receive the good news, but when he is to return to the jungle, he is followed by a suspicious man hired by the attorney, who tries to knock him out. Joe instead manages to kill the man, and boards a ship in the port.
On the ship, the Merman, is Dawson (Alec Craig), a steward who helped Joe against his unknown assailant. Also on the ship are Captain Saul (William Edmunds) and his mate, Buck Harris (Victor Kilian). Among the few passengers is the alluring Nita Paxton (Phyllis Brooks), who a cabaret artist whom Joe takes a liking to the minute he boards the ship.
Before the ship lands in its first port on the cruise, Dawson is murdered, and Joe gets rid of the body by feeding it to the fish, to avoid being blamed for his death. On shore in Los Altos, Joe and Nita go off romancing together. Upon their return to the ship, Joe discovers that Bergstrom has come aboard and brought a man calling himself Joe Beck (Jack La Rue). Joe instantly suspects Nita of being in cahoots with Bergstrom, trying to trick him out of his inheritance. She then confides in him, that Dawson was an undercover agent for an insurance company, suspecting the captain and his crew of insurance fraud. She is trying to finish his work after he disappeared.

More than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50 mile stretch of heavily fortified structures of French settlements along the coastline, to fight Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France where Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, "we will accept nothing less than full victory.’ More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported this effort, and by day's end, the Allies gained a foothold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives was high. More than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were lost, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 Soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Germany.

Walter Izard, artiste peintre à ses heures, est en réalité le colonel Marcel Duclos de l'Intelligence Service. Son occupation principale est la réalisation entre les forces belges et la résistance intérieure et l'état anglais. Il fait la connaissance de madame Watson Evelyne, femme charmante et amie du banquier Farrar. Ce dernier également chef du groupe des "Résistants" est en relation "d'affaires avec son ami Izard". Un beau matin un coup de feu retentit dans la banque. On se précipite dans le bureau du "patron" et on trouve Farrar mort. Crime ou suicide ? Suicide pour la majorité, car Farrar inanimé tient dans sa main un revolver. Mais Izard, qui était dans la banque au moment du drame a vu sortir du bureau du banquier, une dame en deuil, quelques minutes avant que ne retentisse le coup de feu. Sous un voile épais cette dame était naturellement méconnaissable. Mais son élégance éveille les soupçons du peintre. Peut-être se trompe-t-il ?
D'autre part, cette affaire semble être d'un grand intérêt pour les "gentlemen" de la Gestapo. Le chef de cette organisation "sans but lucratif et sans scrupules" envoie un délégué pour enquêter sur cette affaire. Ce délégué est le brave inspecteur Schuller, bon à rien. Il est soutenu dans sa salle besogne par le lieutenant S.S. Stéphane, traître à la solde de l'ennemie.
On trouve chez Farrar une enveloppe cachetée contenant les noms de quelques "patriotes résistants". On jubile à la Gestapo, perquisitions et arrestations immédiates. Une perquisition infructueuse "du faux journal le Soir". Ensuite ce sont les interrogatoires "Made in Germany" où les moyens les plus inhumains sont en honneur pour arracher une parole.
Walter Izard et Madame Watson sont invités au château de Wattignies, qui est un centre actif de la résistance et ou fonctionne un poste clandestin. Il y a là le comte de Wattignies, sa fille, le Docteur Darville, le majordome et le personnel du château, ainsi que deux aviateurs alliés bien en sécurité et qui comptent sur ces patriotes pour retourner sous peu en Angleterre.
Mais il y a aussi Madame Watson, trop charmante pour être honnête; c'est une espionne de grande classe.
Izard découvre son jeu dangereux et malgré le réel attachement qu'il a pour elle dans une scène pathétique, dans le souterrain du château, elle est froidement abattue au moment ou après une dernière ruse elle allait dénoncer les patriotes à ses amis de la Gestapo.
L'opération se termine le jour du débarquement à l'avantage de ceux qui jamais ne doutèrent, par le départ en avion de toute l'équipe traquée, et ce, au grand désappointement des génies de la barbarie.
