The South China Sea is a marginal sea that is part of the Pacific Ocean, encompassing an area from the Singapore and Malacca Straits to the Strait of Taiwan of around 3,500,000 square kilometres (1,400,000 sq mi). The area's importance largely results from one-third of the world's shipping sailing through its waters and that it is believed to hold huge oil and gas reserves beneath its seabed.
It is located
The minute South China Sea Islands, collectively an archipelago, number in the hundreds. The sea and its mostly uninhabited islands are subject to competing claims of sovereignty by several countries. These claims are also reflected in the variety of names used for the islands and the sea.
South China Sea is the dominant term used in English for the sea, and the name in most European languages is equivalent, but it is sometimes called by different names in China's neighboring countries, often reflecting historical claims to hegemony over the sea.

BEIJING — China has apparently finished expanding its manmade island outposts in the South China Sea and has moved on to building military infractures on some of the larger islands, according to the Pentagon's annual assessment of military and security development of China. The report states that China is currently focused on outfitting its three largest outposts — Fiery Cross, Subi and Mischief Reefs in the Spratly Islands — with military infrastructures, including airfields with runways measuring at least 8,800 feet, water and fuel storage, port facilities, 24 fighter-sized hangars, communications facilities and barracks and administration buildings. Once the facilities are complete, China can house up to three regiments of fighter jets in the Spratly Islands. According to A...
China is reportedly considering a change to its maritime policy: it would require foreign submarines to surface and fly their national flag while in Chinese waters, including the South China Sea. That could have a significant impact on American forces, because the U.S. Navy maintains at least four forward-deployed attack submarines in the area. The Japanese Defense Ministry announced on Friday that the Maritime Self-Defense Forces and the US Navy have concluded large-scale joint naval exercises in the disputed South China Sea. These weren't some dinky patrol boats, either: the exercise involved the nuclear-powered aircraft supercarrier USS Ronald Reagan and the Izumo-class helicopter destroyer, the largest warship in the Japanese fleet. The JS Sazanami, a guided missile destroyer, also participated in the three-day exercises that ran from Tuesday to Thursday.

The Chinese navy “warned” a US warship to leave waters near a reef in the South China Sea, Beijing said, after the US carried out its first ‘freedom of navigation’ patrol in the disputed region under Donald Trump’s administration. The USS Dewey sailed close to Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands, one of a string of islets, shoals and reefs that China claims in the resource rich and strategically important waters, US officials said.

The rise of China is the key issue of the 21st century. Can China rise peacefully? Has America's engagement policy created a peer competitor? How should the US respond to Beijing's island-building in the South China Sea, and its institution-building in the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB)? This short documentary film (18:43 minutes) by Bill Callahan examines how the personal experiences of iconic IR theorists John Mearsheimer (Chicago) and Joseph S. Nye, Jr. (Harvard) on their first trips to China have framed their strategic understandings of US-China relations. Are Offensive Realists like Mearsheimer correct that a rising China is structurally determined to challenge the hegemonic US? Can US-China relations be managed through diplomacy and international organisations, as the L...

Travel video about destination Macau in China. After 466 years, Portugal handed back the city of Macau to China. It is small and museum-like, a fine example of colonial Portugal on the South China Sea. The Fortaleza Do Monte is a typical Portuguese fortified complex strategically located on a hill above the old cathedral in the heart of the city. Its many old canons and mighty fortress walls are reminders of those times when invasion was a constant threat. The old centre of the city is the triangular Largo Do Senado, Senate Square. Its wonderful colonial buildings with their light-colored facades were built at the end of the 19th century and completely renovated in the final decade of the 20th. Macau's largest Buddhist temple, Templo de Kun Iam Tong, dates back 400 years to the Ming Dyn...
