Weatherzone and SteadySun have signed a commercial and technological cooperation agreement to offer comprehensive and state-of-the-art solar production forecasting solutions for energy networks and market operators as well as energy traders in Australia and New Zealand.

Weatherzone supports private companies and government organisations in over 15 industries within Australia and internationally. Staffed by accredited meteorologists, engineers and atmospheric scientists, Weatherzone is specialised in:

  • Accurate and reliable forecasts – Weatherzone employs one of Australia’s leading and proven forecasts systems, Opticast.
  • Severe weather monitoring and alerting – Real-time alert systems and customised monitoring dashboards provide specific and business aligned alerts.
  • Lightning detection – The Weatherzone Total Lightning Network provides superior detection and storm forecasting abilities.
  • Science, technology and innovation – Weatherzone is staffed by accredited meteorologists, engineers and atmospheric scientists.

Experienced meteorologists provide continued and accurate coverage of the evolving weather issues across the country. Weatherzone utilizes data from over 20 state and private organizations, including the Bureau of Meteorology, to provide specialised business solutions.

Weatherzone’s existing services to the energy sector, combined with STEADYSUN market leading solar forecasts, provides a clearer understanding of total energy balance.

Charles Solomon, Managing director of Weatherzone, said: “Weatherzone is very pleased to enter into this partnership with SteadySun to bring world-leading solar production forecasting to Australia.

As the focus on renewable energy sources increases the demand for highly accurate and reliable forecasting technologies and techniques becomes more important and, together with STEADYSUN, we will be best positioned to assist Australian companies as they strive to improve their production efficiencies.”

The variability of the solar production, together with larger installed capacities have led to the development and the implementation of reliable production forecasting methods. Moreover, these production forecasts have to be made available for various time horizons and geographical aggregation compatible with the grid operations.

This is a matter of security as well as economic efficiency of the networks.

STEADYSUN service solutions, available on a worldwide basis, contribute to an efficient integration of the solar energy into the grid by reducing the cost of the generation variability:

  • anticipate the solar energy injection into the networks (transport and distribution),
  • reduce power plant operation costs,
  • support energy trading operations,
  • optimize the management of an asset portfolio which includes solar resources.

Beyond the commercial cooperation, it is clear that the technologies, analytical tools and systems used by Weatherzone and SteadySun are complementary and enable mutual enrichment.

Xavier Le Pivert, President of STEADYSUN, added: ” We are happy to develop this partnership with Weatherzone. As the leading commercial weather service provider in Australia, Weatherzone have the expertise and the market recognition to successfully promote our solar forecasting service portfolio in the area.
We will share our expertise, as well as our knowledge of weather models, satellite imaging and processing. This partnership will also allow us to access the Australian and New Zealand energy markets.”
