Esquire is an American men's magazine, published by the Hearst Corporation in the United States. Founded in 1933, it flourished during the Great Depression under the guidance of founders Arnold Gingrich, David A. Smart and Henry L. Jackson.
Esquire was first issued in October 1933. It was founded and edited by David A. Smart, Henry L. Jackson and Arnold Gingrich. Jackson died in the crash of United Airlines Flight 624 in 1948, while Gingrich led the magazine until his own death in 1976. Smart died in 1952, although he left Esquire in 1936 to found a different magazine, Coronet. The founders all had different focuses; Gingrich specialized in publishing, Smart led the business side of the magazine while Jackson led and edited the fashion section, which made up most of the magazine in its first fifteen years of publishing. Additionally, Jackson's Republican political viewpoints contrasted with the liberal Democratic views of Smart, which allowed for the magazine to publish debates between the two. This grew particularly heated in 1943 when the Democratic United States Postmaster General Frank Comerford Walker brought charges against the magazine on behalf of the administration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The administration alleged that Esquire had used the US Postal Service to promote "lewd images". Republicans opposed the lawsuit and in 1946 the United States Supreme Court found in Esquire v. Walker that Esquire's right to use the Postal Service was protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.
Esquire (British English: /ɪˈskwaɪə/; American English: /ˈɛsˌkwaɪr/, /ɛˈskwaɪr/ or /ɪˈskwaɪr/; abbreviated Esq.) is usually a courtesy title. Esquire is similar to the word squire, which in medieval times meant an apprentice to a knight.
In the United Kingdom, Esquire historically was a title of respect accorded to men of higher social rank, below the rank of knight and above the rank of gentleman. It later came to be used as a general courtesy title for any man in a formal setting, usually as a suffix to his name, as in "John Smith, Esq.", with no precise significance. In certain formal contexts, it remains an indication of a social status that is recognised in the formal Order of Precedence.
In the United States, Esquire is mostly used to denote a lawyer; in a departure from traditional use, it is used irrespective of gender, and women lawyers use the title as well as men. In letters, a lawyer is customarily addressed by adding the suffix Esquire (abbreviated Esq.), preceded by a comma, after the lawyer's full name.
Minka Dumont Kelly (born Minka Dumont Dufay; on June 24, 1980) is an American actress. She is most known for her roles in the TV series Friday Night Lights (2006), Parenthood (2010) and Charlie's Angels (2011). She is also known for her role in The Roommate (2011). She appeared in the 2013 film The Butler as Jackie Kennedy and in the Fox science fiction/crime drama Almost Human.
Kelly was born in Los Angeles, California. She is the only child of former Aerosmith guitarist Rick Dufay and the late Maureen Dumont Kelly. Her parents split up when she was young, and she was raised by her mother. Her paternal grandfather was actor and investment advisor Richard Ney. Kelly and her mother moved to various communities, before settling in Chicago by the time Kelly was in junior high school. She has French and Irish ancestry.
After graduating from Valley High School in Albuquerque, Kelly returned to Los Angeles. While on a test shoot for a modeling agency, she was approached by a former Playboy Playmate who was interested in managing her, and who placed Kelly as a receptionist at a surgeon's office who would provide Kelly breast augmentation in exchange for hours worked. She ultimately decided against the procedure, leading to her being fired. That exposure to the medical field prompted her to attend school for a year to become a surgeon's assistant; afterward, she worked as a scrub technician. During the four years she spent in that vocation she continued auditioning for film and television roles.
Norman Mark Reedus (born January 6, 1969) is an American actor and model best known for his television role as Daryl Dixon on The Walking Dead, an AMC horror drama series (2010–present). He has also acted in numerous films, appeared in and created several videos, done video game voiceovers, and modeled for various fashion designers, most recognizably Prada in the 1990s.
Reedus was born in Hollywood, Florida, and is the elder of two children born to Marianne (née Yarber) and Norman Reedus. He is of Italian (from his maternal grandfather), English, Scottish, and Scotch-Irish descent. He was raised in Los Angeles. Reedus also lived in Japan, Spain, and Ireland . He worked at a Harley-Davidson shop in Venice, California and contributed artwork to various shows as a painter, photographer, sculptor, and video artist. He got his first taste of acting in the play Maps for Drowners at the Tiffany Theater on Sunset Boulevard. He was first discovered at a party in Los Angeles, where someone asked him if he wanted to be in a play.
Magazines are publications, usually periodical publications, that are printed or electronically published (the online versions are called online magazines.) They are generally published on a regular schedule and contain a variety of content. They are generally financed by advertising, by a purchase price, by prepaid subscriptions, or a combination of the three. At its root, the word "magazine" refers to a collection or storage location. In the case of written publication, it is a collection of written articles. This explains why magazine publications share the word root with gunpowder magazines, artillery magazines, firearms magazines, and, in various languages although not English, retail stores such as department stores.
By definition, a "magazine" paginates with each issue starting at page three, with the standard sizing being 8 3/8" x 10 7/8". However, in the technical sense a "journal" has continuous pagination throughout a volume. Thus Business Week, which starts each issue anew with page one, is a magazine, but the Journal of Business Communication, which starts each volume with the winter issue and continues the same sequence of pagination throughout the coterminous year, is a journal. Some professional or trade publications are also peer-reviewed, an example being the Journal of Accountancy. Academic or professional publications that are not peer-reviewed are generally professional magazines. The fact that a publication calls itself a "journal" does not make it a journal in the technical sense. The Wall Street Journal is actually a newspaper.
